Good Morning Lantus Land!

Yesterday's Condo

Overall Attie is indeed feeling better! He is even eating his bunny and looking for more this morning. :smile: Finally! I think he is over the worst of it. So after the holiday we'll go back for another post illness check. The vet wants to be sure we were not getting a pneumonia/athsma like lung response from a severe flair up of Rhinotracheitits. His hint was when the X-rays showed virtually no difference.

Attie is still wet coughing, but much less severly and he has started sneezing. The vet stafff suggested I get everybody in the house started on L-lysine.

Yes LInda, it seems that they have melted to bath us in the healing love and powers of Lantus Land.

Surpirsingly no. I only have one Cat sit for a few days, two of my dailies are teachers or had college kids home, so no walks from them either. So I am planning on cooking off my Turkey and freezing what I don't eat. Of course my kitters will get some as well. Turkey, stuffing, sweet yams, green beans, and cranberry salsa! Yummy! I am thinking of making peanut butter brownies for dessert. Then all my leftovers will carry me through the already fully booked Christmas/New Years week!

Well their decision was to go with two weeks of Abs and bupe, then reevaluate. She does have an angels for animals fund for her care. I was told they think the wire that held the pin can stay. With a raging anerobic infection I think it is the wrong call. Waiting a week to get the infection to settle down is OK, but she needs more professional observation and follow-up. It is a bit messy, as processes in shelter systems can be and that is on a good day. I am going to push to have Dr. Topham see her next week. He is the shelter vet that worked with me regarding Atlas.

Hey Gang! Whew it has been a very rough 2 weeks. There waz a few dayz I didn't thinks I was gonna makes it. Thenz da beanz gots me goinz to see Dr. Nappierz allz weeks...uh? He'z realz nice, buts I likes to see himz on better dayz! Tanks for all the KTSS! I may even makes ya'll some Turkey Soups for a thank you as soonz as I feelz 100%! ~~Attie

That sounds like a pretty good update. I'm glad Attie is feeling better, and that Gary is finding his place in the household.
I'm also glad that you're fighting for some more veterinary attention for Bermuda.

I am so glad Attie is feeling better! Sending healing vines so that he gets even better. A good appy is a great sign!

Hi Beth,

two things

1) Does Attie stretch his neck right out to cough and crouch down when he does this? In your spare time please check out Fritz the Brave's site and videos. This is where I learned the most initially.

2) Regarding the lysine. I had a moderator on another forum email me info about this and for an active flare you should do two bolus doses of 500mg twice a day for a total of 1000mg based on new literature. Not 250 and not throughout the day. I emailed Susan and Lanky about this when Lanky was going to the ER for issues and he responded right away to this. Please do this.

Thanks for the suggestions. I looked at the video and Attie has not been coughing like that. He looks or sounds more like a kid with whooping cough.

Thanks for the information on the lysine too. The lysine treats the vet provided are premeasured at 250mg and say 1-2 treats several times a day.

Rhinotracheitis (sp) is an active herpes infection. All three cats likely have it. The vet said based on reading through my notes and the x-rays it is beginning to look like this was/is a flair that has been building up since May. Everytime I noted his lack of appetite(food fit) was likely due to the virus. In most cases you also see the increase in BG as well.

It doesn't diminish the seriousness of this flare, as left untreated would result in bad complications. He is strongly leaning towards this explanation. At one point we did try a bronchodialator in office and it made little to no difference. I am not sure what it was, but the vet seemed to think we'd see a fairly prompt response and didn't.

Hi guys .. now this is definitely news to be thankful for this Thanksgiving! So glad to hear attie is feeling better .. will continue sending get well thoughts his way .. I won't be here this weekend because of Thanksgiving so have a wonderful holiday!
 
Oh...hands full...hands full....glass is not half empty right now....

Attie very happy with these treats from the vet! Comes running to get them! His wet cough is becoming less frequent and less heavy....and most of the gurrgliing when breathing is gone. :smile:

You know, I never thought of this but Tobey has very occasional herpes outbreaks...mostly affects one eye when he gets vetty stress. His lungs looked a little bizarre on xray and if I don't stay with the l-lysine, he can sound very snuffly nosed.

Hope he continues to get better and better!!

Well the more the vet reviewed my records and the more we talked...the more he was coming to the conclusion that this was a very serious and bad rhinotracheitits thing. He thinks the cough was a bit of a red herring and what we're hearing in his cough is nasal drainage...we had weepy eyes and sneezes most of the summer. The nasal drainage can lead to pneumonia or triggering a bronchial distress event if untreated. Thing is Attie turned so quickly over a weekend it was scarey!!! In fact we had just been to the vet a few weeks prior and the tech had noted his third eyelid peeking out (duh...hint...duh...). But there were no other signs at the time.

This could take a full month to right itself. While I am glad we did a lot of tests to eliminate causes, it cost a lot of money. But the other options would have been more expensive and hazardous. I am grateful Dr. Nappier took a more conservative approach and I will take a stepped up approach to get this under control as soon as possible. He is far from 100%, but him eating and looking for me to come feed him is a relief.

We still have that ultrasound to do on his spleen for a growth noted in the x-ray.
