Mike and I thank each and everyone one of you for your wonderful posts of support the last couple of days. It's been a very difficult time for us. Many of you have lit candles, posted poems, and you've all given us so much comfort with your words.

Even though Gussie is a civvie here, we know he was well loved by all and we thought it would be fine to post a tribute to him here in LL with our family. Please do not feel like you have to post another candle or verse if you already have. You honor him just by reading our tribute.

Earmark Caledonia's Gus is Gus was his fancy name but we called him Gus, Gussie, Gus-Gus, Guppits, and Ginger Kitten even to the moment of his last breath. He was born March 21, 1996 and started his new journey last night. From the first moment when we met him, he had that huge motor going. We already had our Teddi Bear and she was so amazing that we went back to the breeder to get another kitten. I was taken by a little gray kitten but Mike immediately was mesmerized by the little blond kitten that the breeder assured us would grow up to be a deep and rich ginger. For his entire life I told him the story that his mama always wanted him but his daddy wanted the little gray kitten and thankfully, I won. But Gus knew the truth because he was always and forever his daddy's boy and they have and always will have an unbreakable bond.

We had decided to adopt him when our other two kitties were healthy but Gus was too young to go home with us yet. In the ensuing weeks, our Nik got sick and was dx with liver cancer. As fate would have it, the day we were to pick Gus up and bring him home, Nik needed to cross the Bridge. I felt there was no way I could bring a new kitten home on the same day Nik crossed but the vet told me to get over there and get that kitten and so I did. He hollered his head off the ENTIRE hour from the breeder's house to ours and I wondered what we had gotten into. Weren't Scottish Folds supposed to be quiet? I am thankful every day that the vet was so insistent because even as we sobbed, he had us laughing with his kitten antics.

There are too many memories of Gussie to share in this tribute because he brought so much unfathomable joy to our home. Whenever the doorbell rang, he went to the door as if everyone was coming just to see him. He loved everyone and the number of those who love him is multitudinous. From the time he was 10 months old until he was 10 years old and started having arthritis, he and I did pet therapy at a local nursing home every week. I cannot even describe the joy and love he gave to the residents there and he was quite famous. There were stories published about him as a "therapist" in Cat Fancy, in the International Scottish Fold Association Newsletter, and in the Tucson newspaper.

He loved every kitten brought into our home and was a wonderful brother to our GA's Teddi and Max. He let Gracie climb all over him when she was just a 1 lb baby and even when she tried to chew on his little, tiny, folded ears, he was patient and loving. Hissing was not in his vocabulary. There could be no more loving and gentle soul than our Ginger Kitten.

He bravely existed with very degenerative arthritis and, in February, 2014, he would have been dx with CKD for four years. His kidneys did not fail him; it was some kind of intestinal issue and he could not get any nutrition absorbed so he was wasting away. Every day at noon, if we were not on our toes, he would remind us that it was time for his squids. He happily sat on his squids condo, looked out the window, and purred. He happily took his meds because he knew it would allow him a good QOL of more time with us.

In the last few days, it was harder and harder to get him to eat and he was always a good eater. He was extremely wobbly when he walked. He was drinking a ton of water. He was tired. We wanted to help him cross while he still had dignity and could make it to the LB on his own. It was the very least we could do for our Gentle Gus....our Ferdinand of cats. Dr. B told us there was nothing left to do that would not be intrusive and we did not want that for him as we knew he would not get better. We had a beautiful day together yesterday and we took him out in the yard, sat with him, and let him chew on any plant he wanted and stay out until he was tired.

One little guy (although not so little when he was healthy) and what an enormous hole in our home but our hearts are so full with the amazing love we all share. We know he will be with us through our grief and when it is time for him to move on, we know we will see him again. We will hear that huge purr and feel those incredible kisses he gave us every single time we picked him up.

Gussie.....we will love you always and forever and thank you for the gifts of love and joy you brought to us every single day.

Marje & Mike,
That was absolutely beautiful. I have you both in my heart.

Gussie,
You were, and you remain, one of a kind. I only knew you "virtually", but I feel a hole in my heart nonetheless. You will be missed, and always fondly remembered. Fly free, high, and far, little man.

Love,
Carl

Gussie, although you never "knew" me, I knew you. I secretly loved you the first time I saw your photo. I felt you pass last night, all of a sudden, I was breathless for a minute .... looked at the clock, and knew it was you. You were and are deeply loved.

xx

There are no words I can say that are close to adequate. Gus had a life worthy of celebration. While I'm in tears writing this, Gus deserves joy and not sadness for the delight he brought to so many.

Fly free and land softly, Gus. You are dearly missed.

Marje and Mike,

What a beautiful tribute to your wonderful Gus. I've been thinking of you all day, and holding you close to my heart.
Love and peace to you both.

Barb

Marje,

I just wanted to let you know how touched I was by your loving tribute to Gus. I can see how very special he was, and I know how much he was loved and will be missed by the family he loved so much.

You and Mike continue to be in my thoughts at this very sad time.

Linda

I loved reading this beautiful tribute♥
I first fell in love with Gus when I watched the youtube video about administering fluids ~ and watched again and again ~ before I even knew it was a video that you and Mike had made.
When I visited you last month I felt a little star-struck when Gussie walked up to me to greet me. My first words to him were, "Hello Gus I love you." I couldn't help myself. He radiated love, and I felt it right away.
You and Mike are such amazing beans and gave Gus a beautiful life. Truly inspiring.

With Marje's permission, I have some photos of Gus to share:

Fly free, sweet Gus♥

(((HUGS)))) It seems so unfair that you and Mike who give so much of your time to help us here had to lose one of your precious fur kids.

I know Gus will be looking down on all the kitties here and their civvie brothers and sisters and sharing his love with us on those days when we start to lose hope in our ability to help our cats. His love will brighten the hard days.

:YMHUG: o:-)

To my best gentleman cat friend Gus, I's know you are feeling frisky and fine today at the bridge and are reunited with many who loves you lots. I's hope you are getting to eat everything and anything you want and it is all delicious. I's know you are running, jumping and climbing all the while cranking out the biggest purr on the other side of the bridge. Don't worry about your beloved beans and your family you left behind for now. We's watching over them. - Zener

The Two Chefs have prepared a welcome banquet in Gus's honor. All of us GAs are so happy that he had a peaceful passage. Auntie Marje and Uncle Mike, we all love you and we will take good care of Gussie until you meet again.

(((Marje and Mike))) what a beautiful and moving tribute to sweet Gus. I also have been thinking of you today and holding both you and Mike in my thoughts and prayers. I will always remember the video of Gus where I, too, watched over and over when I was learning how to give my Maggie (GA) squids. What a sweet and precious angel. I love the pics of Gus posted by Josie.
Hugs and prayers,
Ann, Katie, & Maggie (GA)

Yes, sweet Gussie was a civvie, but that is no matter here...we all truly love him. LL doesn't know the difference between FD kitties and civvies. He has a special spirit that touched all of us. I am sure Mario, and all of our other GAs (FD and civvies) greeted him at the gates, and are now showing him the ropes. And when we all meet up again, it will be quite the celebration...

(((Marje -Mike))) What a lovely tribute to a very "special man". There is no goodbye to Gus for you and Mike he will always be in your heart.

Oh, Marje, that was truly awesome. Gus is a part of your heart and soul, and he will always be with you. I am crying as I write this, like everyone else. I hope you and Mike will take comfort from the beautiful day you spent with him and all those wonderful memories. {{{{HUGS}}}}

Our hearts are so filled with love for each of you for honoring our sweet, sweet Gus and for your own tribute to him. Thank you for the candles, the photos, and for Chef Stu and Chef Mannie for creating for him a "welcome home" dinner. We know it was incredible and Gussie enjoyed every morsel.

Josie...thank you so much for sharing those photos....I hadn't seen them and they are very special to us. We are so happy that you, Liz, and Rich met him in person and saw how amazing his soul is.

We are trying to be strong.....it's very quiet here even with Gracie and Tobey romping around. He had such a presence even if he was just sleeping in one of his beds.

Thank you all for being our friends and celebrating his life with us.

Marje - I haven't been on the board for a few days. I just saw the news about Gus. I'm so very sorry for your loss. Sounds like Gus had a wonderful life and dignified crossing, both of which were so filled with love. My sincerest condolences.
