Ok well I like this number. Since I started a new pen this morning (didn't need to - just wanted to rule out less-than-potent pen) I gave him a really skinny 1.5u and left lots of food. He was very frisky this morning. I know that he is missing the room that the kittens are in but we all have to sacrifice for now. It is only temporary.
What I find is that when you bring in another animal it causes two teams. One team is "us" and the other team is "them". Before the kittens the us-team were my civvies versus Alska as "them." Now with the kittens, Alska and civvies are on the same us-team versus the kitten family being the "thems". There have not been any skirmishes. My boy civvies seem to be leaving Alska alone because now he is an ally instead of an opponent. I love it when a plan comes together!
