11/21 TiTi in yellows w/no poop, so lots of lactulose and she pooped!

2 1/2 days of no poop was very alarming. Last night and today I gave TiTi extra miiralax -zip. Then I turned to lactulose. After about 11 cc of lactulose, she finally pooped. I was really worried because her middle region resembled a boa that had swallowed a fetal pig. Now she's kind of distended, but I hope that's gas. She's also pretty quiet, but this is when she ordinarily sleeps.

She's either bouncing to yellow BGs, and/or reacting to the sugar in the lactulose.

Oddly, even after all that intervention, though she pooped a large fat stool, it was normal. I expected diarrhea.

??? I'm not sure whether or not to continue the lactulose and/or up the Miralax, or what. Be nice to have some input. She's had 3 manual evacuations in the last year,. Constipation is always a possibility for her. Preventing it is always tricky. :confused:

OK. Never mind. The diarrhea just arrived. It oozed out right after another normal poop, and, alarmingly, it looks like there's more to come.

Hi Kathy! I have no experience with miralax or lactulose but lots of kitty constipation and cat enema experience :banghead: What has worked for Elmo is Pet Alive Natural Moves . It does have a bitter taste so I mix with syringe of water and give it to him that way . He still is not fond of it BUT has had a BM every day since we started it almost 9 months ago !!!! Might be worth checking out for Titi cos we both know there are much more fun ways to spend our time than giving our fur babies enemas ;):)

Paws had to be sedated for a manual evacuation last Monday - he was constipated solidly through his entire large intestine... he's had constipation issues for years, but never this bad. Was terrifying b/c of his heart murmur, but turned out fine.

The vet recommended that rather than going with Miralax that I just try adding 1/8 tsp psyllium husks to his food twice daily (it's the main ingredient in Metamucil, but without all the flavorings and sugar). Worked like a charm, so far, smooth flowing, bulky, no-stress poops every day for the past week. Have you tried that? Best case, a better result than free-flowing diarrhea... worst case, you wasted a couple dollars on some psyllium husks. I had to go to Whole Foods to find it, couldn't find it with the supplements or fiber at the pharmacy or target. But YMMV, ECID...
 
Have you talked to the vet about Cisapride? It increases motility. I gave it once or twice per day depending on how much Mav poops.
 
My cat had to be manually evacuated about 3 years ago and yes it is traumatic. I found that lactulose, which the vet initially recommended was raising my cat's BG tremendously. I had a funny feeling the vet said no it's a synthetic sugar and it doesn't stay in your system but guess what it stayed in my cat's soon as I went to pumpkin or Miralax I had dropped numbers and pooping fine. I read somewhere you can't quote me because I don't remember I just remember something wasn't right with the Asylum husks or something forgive the spelling I'm using the microphone but they said the Asylum fiber wasn't so great. Anyhow I wish you luck prayers your way and I found great luck with 1/8 of a teaspoon of Miralax morning and evening meal an extra water always extra water in the meal and I've had no problems I'm down to actually 1/8 of a teaspoon only in the morning meal now
 
I have never had to deal with constipation in a kitty.

Did a quick search, for the psyllium husks, it seems that though it can help soften stools, it does add a lot of bulk, which can be contraindicated in the treatment of some conditions.

Yes, awful experience. TiTi had the same over a year ago. The xrays showed the intestines full to the point, where backing up into the stomach was the next step. In fact the mass of impacted feces was so heavy, it sat on and depressed her bladder's route to peeing. She had an enormous bulge that turned out to be her expanded bladder. The vet used a syringe to suck out the pee, before she did a manual evacuation. After that TiTi had 2 more evacuations. At that point I stopped experimenting with the amount of Miralax needed, and started using a whole lot. Diarrhea is not great, but it beats constipation and impacted feces.

This time she was getting too little Miralax. Apparently, 1 tsp or a little under is the amount she needs.

Pumpkin did nothing for her. I'll check with my vet about cisapride. But frankly, Miralax works, and so far is the least expensive alternative, so I'll probably stick with it.

It was a very scary day.
