11/21 Maddy AMPS 149, +3 127, +6 123, PMPS 103 - BCS

I need some advice on how much insulin to give Maddy this morning. Since the antibiotics have dropped her BG, I don't have a good sense of where her dose should be. Yesterday morning she was at 188 and I gave her 1.5 units. By the evening, she was too low to shoot (115). This morning she is at 165.

I'm trying to decide between 0.5 units and 1.0 unit. Any suggestions?

I will be around most of the day to monitor her and can rearrange my afternoon schedule if she drops too low.

If her normal dose was 1.5 then I wouldn't drop all the way back to .5 what I probably would try since you are going to be around today to monitor is either 1u or 1.25 just to shave it down a little.

Really a 115 is a shootable number with the data to support it, but where she is just clearing an infection and has been OTJ before getting sick I'm not sure right now that you have the data to support shooting low to stay low.

The reason that I didn't shoot last night was exactly for the reason you described - with the antibiotics I feel like I'm dealing with a whole new situation and very little data to back up dosing decisions.

Yep they are tricky when you know you have data but the wrong data for the situation..It took me forever and a lot of late nights poking a cat to figure out that Autumn had extended the length of her cycle to 16 hours instead of 12 after her dental and getting the infection in her mouth cleared up..I kept looking at her spreadsheet and trying to figure out what I was missing..Then it dawned on me I wasn't missing anything just didn't have the right data points because the situation had changed. She was no longer in pain nor was she fighting an infection so all the data I had up to that point was with those two factors included. Now I had to collect new data to be able to make wise choices with the new situation. It's always something new to learn, because just when we think we have figured them out they go and change the rules..lol

Picked up the Orbax from the vet this afternoon and will start giving that to Maddy this evening. Maddy is in good spirits. She's grooming more and surprised me today by getting up on her cat tree, which she hasn't been on for months. I'm glad I moved all the papers and books I was storing on it a few weeks ago. :lol:

I didn't feel comfortable shooting last night. Maddy was at 123, and I chickened out. Started her on the Orbax this morning, she seems to be doing fine with it.

I've gotten a good night's sleep and I think tonight I'm going to give her insulin even if she is low. I figure it might help her stay in green for longer periods of time and give her some more consistency in dosage.

Although I wasn't around much to monitor Maddy today, it looks like she had a nice flat curve. Gave her one unit at AM and PM. She's doing well on the Orbax.

For the first time since October, I feel like I'm actually helping her rather than just trying to figure out what's wrong with her.

What was it about October? Autumn went bonkers number wise then too and took me until last week to figure her out too. Although I'm still amazed you can leave books and papers out. I have a pica cat whose thing is paper, any book left unattended for longer than 30 seconds will be eaten. Heehee

Things are looking good around here. Maddy is doing well on the Orbax and has transformed herself into the poster cat for Lantus with some nice flat curves. Hopefully, she'll spend part of the day on the lawn.

I'd like to think that Maddy decided to go crazy in October because she plans on being well-regulated and well-behaved throughout the holiday season. :roll:

I'm shooting a little low this evening, but I only gave her 0.5 units. I'll check her again before bed.
