Re: 11/19 Bast AMPS 126

Typically, you're not going to get a 100+ point drop when you shoot a low number. The idea is to shoot low and you will get a flat curve. If you look at some of the cats' SSs that have recently gone though an OTJ trial (e.g., Hoot, Bj, Shadow), you'll see there aren't the kind of plummet's you're thinking may happen. I think it will help you be more confident about shooting low if you can do this when you're going to be home so you can monitor and see what happens. Given that Bast is on such a small dose, I really doubt that you'll see a big drop but you need to feel OK about what you're doing.

Re: 11/19 Bast AMPS 126

he dropped 65 points on the 15th and i can not be home to moniter sometimes. Better safe than sorry right now.
He did get a shot this morning. He can get a shot tonight and i can moniter him. With the holidays I will be lucky to have 1 day off a week. Work days are 12+ hours sometimes.
Thanks!
Misty

Re: 11/19 Bast AMPS 126

He is so so close... Maybe the days you are working you can shoot even if he is green but leave him with some higher carb food? His serious lows seem to be at night anyway..do you work nights?

Sienne?

=3.5 49

I said the maGICK words- "I am going to check the cat and go to bed... " so then 49! no bed for mommy... :-x

so he is sitting in front of a bowl of LC fresh food.

so he dropped 38 points so far - I don't think he should be doing that on 1 drop. What do you all think?

Good catch Misty, always happens to me too when I say "ok, one more test and then I'm going to bed" Sorry that Bast didn't let you sleep, and with your busy schedule...

Hugs,
Kathie

You did a great job managing him last night, shame about the lack of sleep though! My cat bailey has dropped to 34 at night on only one drop, he is a small cat and its amazing how little he needs. My vet says the next dose is to "let him sniff the bottle" ;)

Even though he is on such a small dose, bailey isn't ready to go OTJ so I have recently been trying to give him a slightly higher carb food at night to stop him going so low...

Misty --

If Bast is dropping below 50 on one drop, I think it may be worth seeing if his pancreas is up for an OTJ trial. The numbers you've been getting at AMPS are just a hairline above normal and that can happen due to any number of factors.

These are the instructions for an OTJ trial:
  • Test at your normal AMPS and PMPS times. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day as much as possible (small meals are less likely to overwhelm a newly functioning pancreas).
  • If your cat is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If he is blue, feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. If his number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then his pancreas is working!
  • After 2 weeks, if everything is looking good, we have a party!

Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens, we just give him the support he needs. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.
