Long night for us. About midnight Attie had some vomiting. I am thinking that was due to mucus buildup triggering the gagging? He didn't vomit again after that and was immediately drinking lots of water and tried to eat. He kept gagging at the food so we tried something different ...no go either. He has had FF fish all week and I think in some respects he is tired of it. I have not seen him use the litter box either, although he could be doing that when I am not home or sleeping.

I anticipate dashing off to the vet this morning for our first steroid treatment. Not sure what that will entail but sort of thinking he may get a shot.

Been thinking about the lantus and how to handle dosing for the next few weeks of treatment. The lack of flexibility in dosing vs. other insulins is frustrating. This is one time that quarter unit dose increases, building sheds, and the slow action of lantus is detrimental to overall critical care involving other health issues. As the vet said yesterday he is less concerned right now with Attie being out of regulation for several weeks than with getting this fluid build-up in his lungs under control. I on the other hand have both as a first priority.

Karrie & Maverick asked about asthma.

We have not ruled asthma out or in as that is what some of testing was for. There is no actual test for asthma and asthma is treated with steroids in either pill, shot, or puffer forms. I have reviewed all the information I could find in regards to symptoms and I saw none of those in leading up to this event. That doesn't mean it is not, it just means I did not see and indications. All this testing we did was to rule things out that held a potential to be compounded by starting steroids and making matters worse. If the last two tests come back negative, then we're looking at two things....

A sterile bronchial inflammatory response/disease...asthma

or

Metastic lung cancer (which means Attie has days left to live).

We could go for a BLA at that point or not. We're already in a deep financial stiuation from this week alone between the x-rays and extensive bloodwork tests, plus it looks like we'll be starting steroid treatment today which I still don't know what that will be...we're approaching a thousand dollars. The rainy day funds and holiday funds are tapped out.

So paws are crossed the steroids work for a lot of reasons.

(((Beth and Attie))) I can only hope along with you that none of the more serious possiblities prove true, but none of it sounds great. It's complicated enough trying to attain and maintain FD regulation, then throw in other situations to balance!?! Please keep us updated. My prayers are with you.

Re: 11/19 Atlas AMPS 286

Poor Attie! Beth - I hope the treatment goes well and make him feel better soon. Tarragon has had asthma for 6 years and I know how scary it is when they can't breathe. They can do an xray and see if the asthma "spirals" are there, but, you are right, there is no real test for feline asthma. We use the flovent inhaler. T has been having a flare and they have been using prednisone pills to try and get it under control. It is all such a balancing act to try and keep the asthma under control and his BGs still under control as well.

The X-ray was the first thing they did. The vet saw some oddities and sent it out to a radiologist to be read. At that time the radiologist didn't see cancer, just a standard pneumonia type response. The odditiy my vet was questioning was some foggy stuff in the top of the lungs and lots or "crud."

I am thinking he may get a shot to get him started and turn this around within 48 hrs. Then a few weeks of pills or an inhaler.

How long does an inhaler last you on average for T?
How often do you find you need to use it?

Did you make any changes in your home when T was diagnosed?

More cleaning rituals, kitty litters, laundry detergents, household cleaners...?

I had changed kitty litters a few weeks ago to simplicity plus, on Tuesday I immediately started transitioning everybody to Feline Pine...(ha,ha) stories for another time. Mudcat nudged me four times and whined all around the box last night before finally getting in to poo. I told she had to make the change. We're still at half & half...

I use Apple Cider vinegar, dawn & water on the hardwood floors and natural lemon oil to dust furniture...

Beth - Be very careful with the shot. Tarragon used to get a shot every 6 - 8 weeks for his asthma and that is what led to FD. You may talk to the vet about starting pepcid before the shot to avoid any tummy upset. You also want to watch his BG very closely. We are using pills now when he has a flare because you can stop the pills at any time if it messes with their BG whereas, once you give a shot, you can't get it back.

We took out all of our carpet and put in laminate flooring. We also use a low dust kitty litter, Yesterday's News. It is more expensive, but you don't go through as much. Other than that, I just clean a lot to keep the dust down as much as possible.

If you need anything just PM me. Good luck! I am sending healing vines to you and Attie and hope he gets to feeling better soon!
Tarragon is a hard core asthmatic. We use the flovent 240 mg two puffs twice a day. When he has a flare, we also give him one puff of albuterol before his flovent. Albuterol is a rescue inhaler and opens up his lungs so the flovent (steroid) can get in. A flovent inhaler has 240 puffs in it, so you just have to keep track. If that is the route you go, you can order them at 4cornerspharmacy.com much much cheaper. It is a Canadian pharmacy so it will take a few weeks. However, I can send you one to get you started if you need it. They are $50 through Canada, but about $140 in the states for one inhaler.

Re: 11/19 Atlas AMPS 286

Ok...I am out of stress relief pills and have hit panic mode this morning....

Went in to clean up Bermuda's cage and the pin is sticking out of her leg at the hip @-)

Call foster director....call shelter vet tech...take Bermuda to vet around the corner...drop off Bermuda...

come home and call Attie's vet to remind we need results and plan of action...of course it is Saturday and all vet offices are crazy on Saturdays around here...so just a little reminder in good and kind spirits. Offices here are only open until noonish. After that you get into ER costs...

Thank God I have no pet sits today and had planned housecleaning, billing, books and vet trips...

Hi Beth - just wishing you the best - Mannie and I have you in our thoughts daily. Be better Attie!

Thank you so much Michelle and Mannie...

Thank you for your information Melissa and T. I think we'll still need a shot to get this under control and then decide maint. actions. Attie's vet is pretty saavy and I like when I ask him questions if he doesn't know he'll say let me think about it or find out. Cautiously forward. Give you an idea as Attie is on Abs. he didn't want us to stop them until we get results because if something settled in the meantime steroids would make matters worse.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes!!!

Re: 11/19 Atlas AMPS 286

Beth,

Did the vet mention lungworms? I would ask about that. There's a special fecal exam for it....it may need to be sent out.

Good luck, I know how frustrating it is to get no definitive answers. (((hugs)))

Re: 11/19 Atlas AMPS 286

Lungworms negative.

Well we're back from the vet and Attie did get a pred. shot and follow-up X-ray We're to continue ABs. as well through Monday. No insulin dose change unless he gets over 400.

Everything today, but the injection, was picked up by the clinic.

Re: 11/19 Atlas AMPS 286

And finally a Bermuda update:

She will be at MetroPet until Monday. They have indeed pulled the pin in her leg and started her on IV antibiotics.

On Monday she will be transferred to Westpark Animal Clinic :thumbup to complete the rest of the emergency surgery to remove the wiring.

I was quite humbled by the Head of the Health Care Team for my calm, cool, response to the situation. Making the emergency calls and contacts, safely transporting her wrapped in towels (kitty burrito) to imobolize her. And for basically not freaking out. In fact the Health Care Team said I literally saved her life and her leg from what would have been an amputation event. They would hope if they were faced with the same challenge they would respond like I did.

Thank you Red Cross for the Pet FirstAid Training.

OK, I am pouring myself a magarita....

(((Beth))) My gosh you have really had your hands full. We continue to send many healing vines to Attie. I really hope it is just asthma and can be treated effectively.

Bermuda is a lucky girl. I am glad she can be at MetroPet and give you a break so you can focus on Attie. HOpefully the steroid injection will help him quickly.

Re: 11/19 Atlas AMPS 286, +10 214

I was going to say the same thing. You sure have your hands full.
I'm glad you found Bermuda when you did and excellent job on getting her to the vet.
Sending lots of healing over to your house.

Thanks Marjorie and Dyana....

It was definately one of those dreaded worst mornings!!! I just could not believe my eyes when I walked into the foster room and here is the little 5lb. cat walking around with the metal pin sticking out the top by her hip!!!

Part of the update the tech said they suspect two events may have happened. One was the body rejected the pin and is pushing it out....bodies are amazing things...

Or she had healed quicker than anticipated and the body again was ridding itself of what it deemed wasn't needed.

She was lucky or I was lucky it did not cause spinal nerve damage...

Just a little crazy morning....Metropet thankfully is within minutes of my home. On a nonemergency day I could walk there.

Perhaps it is me, but Attie seems to already have some improvement from this morning. My challange now is to keep him eating.

Maverick was on Pred for ten days I think - pill form. He improved right away. It was amazing. So while he was on the pred we started the flovent so that when he was weened off the flovent took care of his asthma for the rest of the time after. The vet we had wasn't knowledgeable on asthma. When he had a coughing/mucous flare up about a year later, he had me up the albuterol but not the flovent. Said flovent didn't work that way. After four months of coughing I went against his advice for the first time based on the yahoo inhaled meds groups advice to double the flovent to 250mcg twice a day. Within a week he was no longer coughing. The 250mg puffer was cheaper than doing double puffs of the 125. You need the aerokat chamber to give inhaled meds. But its the best way to go. People order their puffers from fourcorners or something like this to save money.

If you do find out its asthma and can't afford the chamber, let me know. I have Maverick's. I've been holding onto it for someone that can't afford to buy one.

Sending more hugs.

Just hand fed Attie another 1/4 cn. of FF ocean/shrimp. He didn't cough and hack his way through it! And he has been pretty quiet this evening. Seems like the pred. shot may be doing it's thing.

Thank you Melissa and Kerry...this has been a long week and I will keep your offers in mind. This has worked out to be a very long week and we're still waiting for a long term plan to deal with Attie. I feel bad we took so long to get to giving him the right medication.

We're going to be just crossing each bridge as it comes....course that is all we can ever do in life ...isn't it?

Hi Beth,
I just read up on your day. Kudos to you for negotiating it with grace and competence. We hope the meds will help Attie so that the vets can figure out what the problem is. Sending Attie lots of healing thoughts and vines. Sending you many hugs,

Ella & Rusty

I would think the pred will kick up his appetite a notch or two as well. More healing vines for Attie. I saw Gracie and Tobey leaving with all their KTSS stuff.

oh my on Bermuda - and kudos to you for handling it so well. WOW - that must have gotten the adrenaline pumping.

good news that the pred is helping Attie. We hope for continued improvement. GO ATTIE!
