There is a western blot test for felobart which is the cheaper, and best way to test for it. Stick to your guns on that. Many vets want to run the PCR...very expensive and will only give a positive test during an active cycle. The Western Blot will pick up the antibodies.

Marje, I googled this too and got nothing, same as Venita, what is it? Antibodies for what?

Could she have meant this? Fel. Bartonella Western Blot
As if "fel-o-bart" was slang or jargon for saying Feline Bartonella? I saw it written as above in a list of tests from a lab.

Just a guess. :?

And an excellent guess, CD. I found this article on MarvistaVet and will ask the vet about it today. I have to think they have considered it, especially in such a flea-prone environment as Louisiana, but I will ask. Especially if Azithromycin is the clear ABx of choice for that infection.

Tawny doesn't go outside much, but she is in frequent contact with other pets that do.

This was indeed an excellent guess, CD!

Venita is right, Tawny doesn't go outside much, and when she does it is 3 feet from the house, when I am out there, and she walks around for about 10 seconds and then runs back inside.

She is indeed however in frequent contact with other pets that do, and that come in thru the kitty door at will. It is set so that they can come in but not go back out, that way I can keep the inside cats in and the others will go to the people door to be let out.

The cats here get regular flea prevention treatment but sometimes one or two of the mostly outside cats, 2 of which are very feral, and 4 of which are semi feral, get missed because sometimes I can't get close enough to them to get it on them. Usually with those I bribe them with food, then sneak up on them and "dump" the flea treatment onto them, but sometimes they run off and I can't get it on them. Even though they are feral or semi feral they sometimes use the kitty door and come inside, then when I open the back door they will run back out.

So this could be a real reason for the fever, and we will definitely ask the clinic about it this morning.

Thanks!

Re: 11/17 Tawny

Desi: I'm sorry and I'm glad CD gave you the full name. I was doped up on Nyquil

Here is the info on the Western Blot test: Feline Bartonella Western Blot. The cost at my specialty vet was $68.00. Even though my Tobey was always an indoor cat as were all the kittens, parents, etc. that the breeder had, because the breeder lived in Nashville and there are fleas and fleas can be transported on clothing, we ran the test. If I recall correctly, I believe this test checks antibodies for five different Bartonella strains including the most common one in cats which is the henselae.

I'm hoping Tawny is better today and please let me know if there is any other info you need on this.

I talked to Tawny's vet, Dr. Hebert, late this afternoon & then I talked to Venita who had also talked to Dr. H. Here is the latest update & if I miss anything hopefully Venita will post and catch anything I miss:

Tawny is "doing OK." She found her own corner in a medicine room where she likes to stay and they gave her some food there and she ate it. She is eating and drinking on her own really well. She adores Dr. Hebert and follows her around like a puppy anytime they let her. Dr. Hebert lets her go down the hall to the IM dept with her and Tawny walks along behind her with her tail in the air. She really is a super-sweet cat. And a super-sweet vet.

She is getting 2.5u BID and her #s are better, in the mid to low 200s today.

She still has a waxing/waning fever, her lowest temp today (Farenheit) was 102.6 and her highest, 104.

They did s/thg I think Dr. H called a PCV and said Tawny's red blood cell count was 19%. Her electrolytes are "perfect."

Her IV catheter has blown, Dr. H said her veins are probably just "tired", and since she is eating and drinking on her own so well they did not put another in. The only injections she is getting now is her insulin, all her other meds are oral.

They started her on doxycylene today also, with the Baytril. I asked about the felobart and Dr. H mentioned hemobart, but she said that even if it is any of that Tawny is now getting the doxycyclene which covers both of those -barts.

They want to keep her at least 48 more hours, to make sure she continues to eat and drink on her own and they want to watch this fever.

I am going to visit her in the morning.

Venita posted a fantastic DCIN challenge from an anonymous donor this morning who wishes to extend a challenge to the folks on the Lantus ISG, the other FDMB forums, and DCIN's Tawny's Blog Facebook page: Tawny's Blog Page. This is just incredible and I am at a loss for words. S/thg that rarely happens.

Venita posted more info about this on Community, too:Tawny's Chip-In.

To all of you who have helped with love, white light, healing vines and wishes, prayers and donations, I am eternally grateful. Your generosity, the generosity of the anonymous donor who offered the challenge today, and to all of you rising to the challenge to help Tawny and me, well, there just aren't enough ways to say thank you if I say it in every language on the planet.

So, all I can say is, simply,

Thank you.

& please remember all the others furries and beans who need the power of this board right now too.

"We are fam-i-ly....all my kitty sisters and me".... sorry, now that song is stuck in my head!
Great news on Tawny and hopefully she will be home with you soon. How sweet she follows her vet around like a puppy. :-D

Wonderful to see this post and see that she is coming along and doing okay for now and the "tail in the air" is a very good sign - following the vet around is too. Fantastic.

Keep us posted and know that so many are sending hugs to you and healing prayers and vibes to Tawny.

My notes don't show much more about my conversation with Dr. Hebert except:

Although bloodwork shows a low 19% PCV (HCT/hematocrit), the vets are not considering a transfusion at this time.

The vets have not seen flea dirt on Tawny, so they are not inclined to think that she has a flea-borne parasite, like Hemobart or Feline Bartonella. Also, they are putting DCIN's $ into treatment, not testing.

The vets still are inclined to think this is a UTI or Pancreatitis.

Baring some setback or significant procedure (like a transfusion, I would think), the practice owner has "frozen" the cost of the current hospitalization at DCIN's "budget," $1500. So although the costs through today are higher than that, and we are expecting at least another 2 days in the hospital (until Saturday), we hopefully have a set target for fundraising for Tawny.

Desi and I agreed to get an FDMB calendar to gift to the LVRC. I also will start a thread soon asking for people to add their notes of thanks to the clinic and the people there. I will include those notes when I send the calendar.

That's a great idea about the calendar and the notes from us :-D
You're always Welcome, Desi and Tawny, et al :YMHUG:

Sending more get and feel better vines to Tawny, today.
