Moonie is a little better last night & today..She is om these drugs: Cyproheptadine-for appy & histamine
metroclopramide for vomiting & poor appetite, and Carafate for coating the tummy----
She hasnt had a BM in four days- Can I give Miralax with these medications, it has always worked for her before??
Yesterday morning she was not feeling well, and didnt eat, when we came back, she turned around & was better--She ate almost all her food I see, this am.
I want her to poop, but will these meds interact with miralax?
Thanks I depend on LL nmore than the vets..BTW my regular sweet vet has been callimg a lot trying to help us with moonie & wants to give us stuff for our new apt...
WE hope to move in on Tuesday -Paws & fingers crossed we can & all the stuff is in by then-we bought some furniture yesterday-delivering tuesday!!! :-D a little smiley!

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

Thinking of you and Moonie Roni, as well as Brad. Scritches to Moonie..

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

Yes it's metroclopramide..I called the ER vet who said I could give Miralax but if no poop soon- bring her in...
I want to try Miralax as it has always helped her--How much should give the standard 1/8 tsp? and how many times a day? just the one?? Heck I would be constipated too if I went through what Moonie has!!
I REALLY DONT WANT to bring her in there again!!!!!Thanks for all the help!!

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

Hi Roni,

I don't know about the meds question as I have no experience, but I wanted to stop by for a ((((hug)))) for you all.

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

I believe it's a start with 1/8 tsp. twice a day. And you can increase from there if that doesn't work.
It draws water from the intestines?, and you need to give her extra water when giving Miralax.

I have been through constipation with J.D. when on vacation, and felt the relief when you finally get a poop.
I use Lactulose now with J.D., but I'm not sure it's diabetic friendly. It does work really well for J.D., though.

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

(((Roni))) I've not stopped thinking about you and Moonie. I use Miralax every day with Maggie to help her constipation. Hers is chronic though is the reason for daily. I hope it helps Moonie poop. Most here add it to the food, I believe. To make sure I get it into Maggie, I place a little bit of Gerber bf on a teaspoon, add a little water and then some miralax and stir it! Mags licks it right from the teaspoon.! She loves bf though. I can't remember if Moonie likes the bf, not all cats like it. Placing it in the food works though, too, and as Dyana stated, adding water. Keep us posted. Lots of healing vines, love and prayers to you and Moonie and DH.

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

Warm her belly Roni. Use a hot water bottle or hot blanket to keep her belly warm helps .
Hope Moonie gets better soon.

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

I don't have any advice as far as meds go, but I want you to know you guys are being kept in my prayers ... (((hugs)))

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

Meeting today with FEMA and contractor & electrician ohmygod_smile --But its good.
Pray for me for Moonie to have a magical Poo!!! Please G-D dont want to take her back to that horror ER!
Pray for Magical POo!!!

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

(((Roni)))

I am glad that the ER vet said it was OK to give the Miralax to her. I wonder if the Carafate is causing some constipation. Also, she had the hospitalization, and her eating has not been normal, so these are probably not helping. It's good that she ate a good meal for you. Are you adding some water to her food? That might help with the constipation. You do need to use caution with using Miralax if she is not pooping at all. If there is any blockage, you don't want to add bulk behind the blockage. Since the vet has approved it, I hope it works for her and she is finally able to have a BM. If not, I think the vet is right in asking you to bring her in. I would start her off slowly on the Miralax with 1/8 tsp or less, and try once daily to start? If she poops, you can increase. The vet would be the best one to advise you.

((((Moonie)))

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

Okay - prayers for poo today. It's Poo Prayer Day for Moonie! LOL!

Good news on the apartment - it must have felt good to buy some new furniture and feel like at least some things are getting back to normal. I'll be sending Good Luck Moving vines. Have a great day.

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

Roni --

The Miralax should be fine. If you remember back to when Jojo was around, her approach was to start on a larger dose (i.e., 1/4 teas. x2/day) and ifthe kitty was really constipated bring the dose down as the problem cleared up. Given all that Moonie's been through, starting at her usual dose (1/8 teas?) either once or twice a day may be easier on her.

Just a word on the metoclopramide (Reglan)... This is a drug that is for gastric motility. A lot of vets will use it for nausea/vomiting. Other drugs, like Cerenia (maropitant) or Zofran (ondansatron) are actually better for nausea and/or vomiting. It very well may be that this is the right drug for Moonie, though. This is a link to some info on Reglan and it's use in pets.

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

Praying for the POO!

Hi Roni & Moonie,
We are so glad that Moonie is improving and know that once you get into the apartment she will be even better. So great that your regular vet is in touch with you. That will help a lot.
Sorry I don't know anything about meds, but Dyana is on top of it, and I know that others will be on soon to offer help, too.
Good luck with FEMA and the contractor and electrician!! Sending all sorts of vines for a successful day for you and Moonie.

Hugs, BIG HUGS,

Ella & Rusty

p.s. will call you later

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

Hi Roni - I can't really help with the drugs question, just no experience here at all. I can send lots of feel good vines for Moonie. You guys are in my thought all the time,. Good luck with the apt. I so hope that goes well. It is wodnerful to read that your reg Vet wants to help. That is so great.

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

sending prayers and healing and poopie vines to Moonie and (((hugs))) to you.

Jacky was on Miralax for years no matter what meds he was on. There was never a contraindication. It only forces water into the intestines to soften the stool. Just make sure Moonie is hydrated. I hope this will make her poop.

Good luck in your new temporary apartment.

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

Roni-
So sorry to hear all the troubles Moonie has been having and am praying that Pooing is in her near future. I hope the new apt goes well and you can get back to some sort of routine. All those changes and stressors are hard on us, but have a huge impact on our furrybabies. Can't help with the med concerns but it sounds like you are getting some good advice.

Karen

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

(((Roni))) I'm really glad to here the apartment is working out.

We give cypro to Zener when his appy is lagging and his numbers are low. We found that just 1/32 of a 4 mg pill will get him eating. Karrie always says to give an anti-nausea drug with cypro (we use ondansetron). We also give him miralax (1/16 t BID) and Tillie gets 1/8 t BID. We have given Zener Reglan and it caused him to have little episodes of head tremors (more than his usual CH tremors) so we stopped it right away.

We feel the same way about relying on LL for advice. We sure appreciate everyone here and how much they have helped us.

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

Just sending you extra prayers, Roni. Prayers for poo....prayers for Moonie eating...prayers the move goes well.

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

Hi Roni!

I'm so glad to hear Moonie is improving. I would start her out on 1/8 tsp miralax 2x a day and if it doesn't work the first day, give 1/4 tsp the next morning and 1/8 that night and try that. You can go up to 1/4 tsp 2x a day as a regular dose and to make her go initially, you can give an extra dose as long as you wait enough time in between to make sure you're not going to give her diarrhea. Give water every time and encourage it in between. Racci takes 1/4 tsp 2x a day every day for a chronic problem. She's a big girl though - a 20 pounder + or -. I'm sure Moonie will feel much better if she poops. Racci will not eat and will sometimes vomit from constipation. It also makes her bg go up. It really makes a big difference. Btw, I was told by my vet that it is a natural element basically and does not clash with other medicines.

Good luck with the move and deliveries on Tuesday! I hope the meds start making Moonie feel a lot better. Hang in there!

Hugs,
Melanie & Racci

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

Hey, Roni -

So glad to hear progress is being made toward your apartment!

R-e-a-l-l-y sorry to hear that Moonie is suffering from constipation now. We add 1/16 tsp Miralax to Hershey's food (adding extra water) twice a day. It seems to do the trick. I used to work (clerical) at a nursing facility and remember the techs used massage to help the patients with constipation, so maybe a gentle massaging might help? Just thinking 'out loud' -

Continued HUGS and PRAYERS coming your way -

Libby (& Hershey, too!)

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

What a little trooper Moonie is, taking all those meds. I hope things continue to improve for her. Tess takes Miralax every day too, her poo tend to be a bit hard. It sounds like you've got you answers. You could also just ask a pharmacist, they are great for checking drug interactions.

Great that things are working out w/ this apartment. I am praying that your world settles down soon.

Re: 11/17 Moonie need help with meds

Sending lots of ((((hugs)))). Good luck as you get settled in your apartment and I'm sending healing vines to your home too as work begins toward the reconstruction.

!

Oh, Roni, I'm sorry I missed your condo yesterday and missed out on the poo vines, but I'm glad that Moonie gave you such a wonderful prezzie. Spot has been having poo issues this past week also...and he gets the Miralax twice a day every day. I added pumpkin into the mix...a tsp. with him nini snack with lots of water also. Funny how such a stinky smelly poo will make us want to dance, isn't it!

I'm thinking of you guys daily and sending prayers and hugs. I'm glad your living situation is coming along and you will be able to get out of the hotel. I'm sure everyone will be happy about that!
