Hello All,

Previous Condo: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=55995

So, it only took Smokey a few hours to fine the spider plant- and he loves it... I'm not sure how long it will survive but whatever...
More importantly, Smokey's BG readings are lower than "usual". There are two potential culprits... one, I started using Monoject syringes (from Relion ones) and I know that the BD and Relion syringes are NOT calibrated the same way- so it could be that Smokey is actually getting more insulin (on the same marking) than he was before. Second, it could be that he is just needing less insulin. I've been having to feed him quite a bit of high carb food to be comfortable leaving him while I'm at work- which has created it's own problem. Now, Smokey turns his nose up at food that does not have some HC gravy included in it (though I'm sort of OK with this because the HC does not seem to drive his numbers up much at all). That, combined with the fact that I'm shooting low has led me to reduce his dose- even though he may not have "earned" it- though that may have changed last night. At +4 last night we were at 44. I gave him lots of HC and we bounced back up to the 70's-80's and were int he 100's before I went to sleep. Though, this morning he was back in the 90's. I'm considering dropping his dose again (from 2 to 1.75) for safety reasons as I can't stay home with him...

I'd be interested to hear what people think. While I'm pleased with the prospect of decreasing insulin, this part of the process makes me really nervous given that I'm not home all day.... ugh.....

Gwen:

Wow...SS looks great. Gracie sends Smokey a big hug!!

Been doing a little dose hopping lately, eh?   I see that you reduced from the sk2.50 to 2u; that's a pretty big reduction esp for the numbers he was having....blue PS with a touch of green in the cycle. Then you gave him two cycles at 2u, one at f2u, and then three cycles at 2.25u. My biggest recommendation is that you pick a dose and stick with it and then follow the protocol for reductions/dosecreases.

So that makes it interesting because it's hard to know if the 44 last night was from the 2.25u shed or not. BUT since it was second cycle, if you are following the protocol of a newly diagnosed cat gets a reduction below 50, then you can reduce him .25u tonight and see what he does. You might have to bring him back up. The other option is to leave him at 2u and monitor him closely. If you can't monitor, then you'll have to take him down and see how he does on the 1.75u.

I know you don't want to hear this but I think he needs a few more spot checks at night esp but also in the day when you can.

I hope this helps and pls let me know if you have questions. Others might have some insight, too.

Thanks Marjorie! I can get more spot checks over night- not my favorite but it can be done... I know I've been jumping doses a little bit. I keep telling myself not to, then I get nervous! I think I'm going to go with 1.75 for a few days, let the shed drain and see what happens. I'll not hesitate to go back up to 2.00 if his numbers start creeping up. I just get so worried during the day when I'm not home- particurarly with the change in syringes- I'm going to be sticking with the monojects from ADW from now on- I really like them, I just need to be sure that Smokey's dose is right. I left work early today (which I can't really do much) to check on him and at +8 he's at a nice 77- of course. I'm all freaked out that I'm going to come home to a comatose kitty and he's happy as a lark. He does a great job of surfing- I just don't want to not be around the one time he decides to dive! I'll try to get some more checks in at night- I can certainly get a +2 and a +4 most nights then try for a +6 occasionally.

I'd appreciate continued advice!

PS-Princess Gracie- you's lookin purdy!!!! Wes needs to hang in the green lagoon!

Sounds great, Gwen. I think you are a great bean and a supersmart mom to let him go with a little lower dose and see how he does. You need to be comfortable leaving him and the consistency will help. I hope he really likes the 1.75u and just does some lovely, safe surfs for you.

Smokey...I was dere waiting for you for days and days but den my bean had to give me less juice and now I'm wearing a yellow dress and my bean is pulling out her hair!!! I try to get back ASAP. lubs ya!
