Good morning
well, here we are again, angry(2)_cat Mark and I were expecting Ollie to be lower this morning. But .. rats.
Maybe he'll have some lovely numbers during the day.

We are off to meet a new vet here in FL this am. His website says he treats feline diabetes and that after initial treatment with insulin, and a change to low carb wet food, a lot of cats can be regulated with diet. I'm excited to talk to him. Cross your fingers!

Ollie was breathing fast last night. about 60/min. don't know what that's about but I hope it's just that he's hot because he had his winter coat on for WI and since we dragged him to FL he's been shedding like crazy trying to get rid of it.

Good luck with the new vet - I so hope that works out. it is a relief to rad about one that works with FD, understands the importance of diet. paws crossed for you.

Hey Oliver - you OK? What's up with the breathing, huh? Sounds like he was back to normal this morning. YAY! I can only imagine the amount of shedding with a climate change lake that. It must be everywhere. :-D :lol:

Hi Mary. I'm sure Oliver will come down as the day goes on. I hope his vet visit goes well. Can't wait to hear how your talk with the new vet about FD goes. I'm sure he'll be pleasantly surprised to talk to someone that has so much knowledge as you.

Hi, we have 10 minutes until his shot time and ihave a question.
Oliver is at 115 after his visit to the vet ... I know he was pretty stressed there.. He tried to bite and scratch me and the vet tech. he spent the whole visit gowling. We figured he'd be about 400 tonight from the stress. but he's just at 115.
Do you think we are ok to shoot his regular 2.75?

The other questions Michelle didn't ask: Are you well supplied with strips and do you have high carb food if both are needed? Are you comfortable shooting lower than what you're used to. It's fine to stall (don't feed) for a little bit and retest. Remember, there's info on handling low pre-shots and numbers.

FWIW, some cat's number drop when they're stressed.

Sienne, I have 200 stips, extra batteries for the meter, 0 carbs, 4 carbs, 6carbs, 9 carbs, 12 carbs, 16carbs, 20carbs and 21 carbs, karo syrup and honey. I have the info on handling low numbers printed and laminated... unfortunately, i didn't look at them. I will take them out and read now. Too late to stall, the deed is done.
but... no i don't think i'm comfortable. But i'm barely comfortable shooting high numbers.

Now, eat my chocolate, take a breath, say a small prayer. everything will be fine.??!!!

a smidge of info from the vet.
He's quite interested in the information i gave him. He wanted to know where we got the spreadsheet. Unfortunately, his cat died from complications from diabetes 4 years ago. He was very interested in the food. He has a wall full of science diet and something else, i forget. But he told us not to change anything we are feeding ollie. cool
He said that ollie has 1 tooth with bad gum disease and 1 tooth that is being "overtaken"? by the gum. Probably has a hole in that tooth and needs to come out. He didn't want to do that until ollie is a little better regulated. We made an appointment for Dec. 12. Clean his teeth, and probably extract bad tooth. Poor ollie, i didn't think to ask if that bad tooth probably hurt and is there something i can give him if it does. will call back tomorrow. hate to make the poor little guy wait if he has a bad tooth... bad teeth hurt???!!!

Has he ever had a dental? I am not sure if there is anything u can give him for it but I know cats have a high tolerance for pain. He may have been dealing with it for a while. The dental will help his numbers to improve most likely.

He's never had a dental before. I head horror stories about anesthesia and cats. he's never had a cat or dog who came out of anesthesia stupid, so ollie will have his first dental Dec.

he's playing hide and seek with his dad right now... cool

Yay! Glad all is good, you can do this! Scrabble has had 2 dentals in his lifetime and came through both with flying colors. His breath is so much better too! :-D

and i feel bad that i've let his teeth get bad enough to get pulled out.. don't know why his vet in WI didn't say anything.. but ohboy, his gums are red way in the back of his mouth.
he's chasing a milk bottle top now.. he hasn't done that in a hundred years.

+2 - 76 i guess his lantus has kicked in. he usually eats with +2. should i give him his regular 4%? mark gave him a tsp of 4%

I would feed him his regular and see if he keeps dropping, you can always feed a higher carb if he gets too low. Definetly get a +3

you can if it makes you feel better but most likely his bg will be up with the food, do whatever makes you comfortable. I would probably wait for a +3 but that is just me. Gotta go get a +2 from my boy, paws crossed!

Hi Mary, Nice shooting tonight! Hope Ollie levels out for you and without an all nighter. :mrgreen: Glad you like the new vet, its great to hear he is a progressive thinker about fd. Dont beat yourself up about letting his teeth get bad, it can be hard to tell what is going on in thier mouths. We just learned that in less than a year one of our cat Pepper now has feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions (FORL) and many of her upper teeth are already gone and the loose one is very tender :o . Next step is schedule a dental and probably many extractions nailbite_smile . One positive note, due to Jasper's fd they are all eating wet food already, so with few or no teeth Pepper will still be able to eat as usual.

sorry to hear about Pepper's teeth. rats. what is a resorptive lesion? our vet said that ollie's gums were trying to absorb his bad tooth... or something like that. Is resorptive lesion something like that?

I am not really sure what the resportive lesion is, I think the roots and maybe the whole tooth somehow dissolves back into the gums. There seem to be many theories about the cause but no definitive cause and treatment is extraction. Our vet says we can get her remaining teeth taken out and its done, or let them loosen and fall out over time which will be painful and let our baby suffer fro who knows how long. When he put it like that, its not much a of a choice. I still need to read up on the dental procedure, recovery, etc to time when we will be available to give her whatever care she will need.

No problem, glad I am here to help, that is fine what you gave him. Hopefully he will surf tonight and not keep dropping but you have hc if needed. I am actually not feeling too much better and am going to take some therflu and hopefully be able to go to bed in a couple of hours unless Scrabble decides to drop which I doubt it, thanks for asking! Mr P(pancreas) has not gotten the message yet that he needs to start working! It is hard to go to bed early when I am used to being up at night due to my work schedule but I know my body needs it. I will let you know when I sign off in case you need more help you can post help in your subject but I will be up for a couple more hours.

Grrrrr. sounds like what they told us about ollie's bad tooth. that it's being taken over by his gums. YUCK.. I guess you're right that the silver lining is on wet food they will be ok.
we had a whippet once who was supposed to have 4 puppies. All of a sudden she didn't look so pregnant anymore. When we took her to the vet they told us that she had reabsorbed her puppies and was no longer pregnant.. i guess that's some kind of super reabsorptive something or other.

Just checking in to see how things are going. I think it would be a good idea to get a +3.5. Also...did you have a question cuz the "?" Is on :-D :-D

Sorry to hear Ollie has to have a dental but we've seen cats go OTJ after dentals especially if there was infection, etc.

The first time you shoot your lowest number ever, it is scary. So far so good here. I'll be on a while and will check on you. Just remember, when you get low numbers you feed, retest in 30 minutes. Lather, rinse, repeat until he's up.

You are doing awesome, glad Marje is here now. I remember the first time I shot low numbers I was in a state of panic but you are doing great and well prepared! I would give anything to be shooting low numbers at this point, lol! Keep up the great work!

Mary...if he is still hungry, pls feed only LC now. Good job! If he's doing ok with the tests, I'd get one more in 30 mins. If nest still getting testy, I'd feed LC and give him one hour.

+4 =73 it's interesting that he went up 13 in 1/2 hour. Is that maybe his 8% kicking in?.. it's odd that he usually doesn't seem to react to food very much.
do you think we are ok to wait 45-1hr for his next test? If you think it's best to get him in 30 will do.
i'm going to get 1 tsp of 900% - dove bite for me.

he ran away after this last test, didn't even want to have his food. I'm hoping he's ok to leave until 10 or 11 or amps? i'm interested to know how long this surf lasts, but he's really about done being tested.

I'll get him again at 6 if you think that's a good idea. Someone should invent a little spigot that could be implanted????
