Hi everyone,
AMPS 462 3.2u - decided to kick it up a little to see how he does. He's been having higher numbers this past week.

Spent a long morning reading Janet & Binky's food charts over and over again. I thought about all of the foods that I wrote down yesterday that were 2% and lower carbs. When I revisted the J&B lists, I saw that a lot of foods were well over 60% in fat. I just don't think I should be going higher in fat with the p'itis. If I am going to get that high, than it should be something pretty darn good. Right? right!
So, first I looked at slightly lower option in fat - (his current food is about 56% and 4% carbs) with roughly the same or slightly higher carbs only going as high as 6%. Which left me with few options and they all were beef or fish. Not good for the old allergies and he really likes his chicken. I finally went to the Mom & Pop pet food store and I bought a trial size bag of Nature's Variety Raw Chicken (62% fat, 5% carbs). Now, the last time he tried raw, we made it ourselves (nightmare) and he didn't like it so we gave up pretty quickly. This time, we didn't make it so it might actually taste better  and I'll introduce it with his current food, which I have two cases of and don't want that to go to waste either.
If this doesn't work, I'll order the supplements and try Gator's recipe and I might buy the slightly lower fat/slightly higher carb SophistiCat Supreme Beef Stew just to see if it gives him a better BG than the FF Classic to test that theory.
The store also carries Bravo, Primal (not a big selection), and Stella & Chewy's. Anyone know the as fed values for those brands? Nature's Variety is the only brand the store sells that's listed on J&B's site.

You can call the mfrs and get the data from them. It can take quite a bit of effort because usually the person you talk to does not know as-fed or DM from guaranteed analysis. Especially from the smaller ones. It is very frustrating. I've had them swear up and down to me that they were giving me DM when is was guaranteed. Sometimes you just have to put on a masterclass and school 'em. Asking for their staff nutritionist or veterinarian can help sometimes too.

But it's just important when you do it to so the sanity check that Janet suggests. Get all the info she asks for + get calcium numbers so you could so Ca:P ratio if you wish.

It took me months to get the 411 for just very limited flavors from Nestle *sigh.* Wellness on the other hand has provided me COMPLETE breakdowns of there food in as-fed AND DM when I requested instantly. Many, you make a request and you'll get 1/2 or all but a part of the info you request. Then it take crazy follow up to actually get what you want. So frustrating.

There is another brand that I forget the name of - I'll try to dig it up - that's not on J&B's list. I've seen a post here about how the company refused to release any info. But I don't trust everything I read here. Anyway, they make a bunch of grain-free flavors. I never called them because by the time the local shop had it I was already home-prepping. It's like Avo-shomething-or other.. I'll try to find it.

I bet its an avocado based food- yes avocado (AVO) I seem to remember I bought a random can and they actually liked it. All the sampling became toooo random and confusing for me (and kind of pointless with an acro because you dont really know whats making the changes.) Were back to Friskies; and we follow the numbers with insulin-- wherever they lead ohmygod_smile currently doing pretty well on 16u

Gator, I was actually thinking that I would use your standard email request.
Hi Nancy! I dropped back to the 3.0 tonight because he really doesn't eat as much overnight and I didn't want him to go too low. That's the other thing...I'm home this week and I'm a huge sucker when he turns those eyes on me asking for a chicken treat. I think he's getting more treats this week and making his numbers a tinsy bit higher. Bad momma bean! ohmygod_smile
Glad to hear that Cody is doing pretty well at 16 u. Friskies, huh. I'll have to take a look at their numbers again. It would be nice to get him on something that he'll eat, that's low carb & lower in fat, and doesn't cost an arm & a leg.

Right - it's the best and easiest to start with. And it's like "SERIOUSLY!!!" if they can't get it right when it is so spelled out explicitly [and that's being extremely polite]. Ahhh yea. Anyway, let me know if I can help you along. I get pretty worked up over idiots - my BGs probably sky rocket

Marcy,
I just hate seeing Klinger's numbers so high... I hope you keep trying the 3.2u and keep moving up. Those numbers cant be good for him. I'm unhappy when I see Cody in the 300's. At 380 I'm pulling out the humulin R (which is a faster acting, shorter duration supplemental insulin that works well with lev).

Klinger has gotten way too used to those numbers.
Oh, and I use it, but theres nothing special about Friskies, it even has rice in it... :o but I just can do so much.. and they eat it.

I always get sh**t about this, but we had less p'itis trouble when he ate Purina DM.

I have this very scientific (NOT) test for the fat content. When I put it in the mw for 5-10 sec, is it snapping away?, or barely warm? DM was barely warm, and the Friskies was hot. If you are trying different foods, you might try a couple cans of DM. Its also much denser, so there is more FOOD in the can (less water). Janet and Binky calculated the carbs at 5% Some cats don't like it- go figure

Nancy! Don't put food in the MW! That kills the taurine! nailbite_smile  OK yes I'm a bit of a freak on the nutrition topic. All that snapping you hear is probably the taurine crystals going "ooohhhh nooooo! doooon't zaaaap meeee"

I'll start emailing those companies today, Gator. I'll let you know if I run into any knuckle-heads.
I actually don't own a mw because I fear they zap food of all nutrients and just leave a big pile of nothing. But that's just me. ;-)
I think the vet gave us some cans of the DM when he was first dx. Well, she gave us Hills and Purina...I think he wolfed down the Hills and walked away from the Purina.

Marcy, I agree with Nancy, you need to start looking at upping his dose. Something needs to give for Klinger.

Good luck with getting the nutritional info today.

The brand is called Weruva. http://www.weruva.com It looks like potentially good stuff - many grain free flavors.

One of my sanity checks is to take the info they provide and compare against the Guaranteed Analysis that is generally published on their website. If it is the same then you know you got GA and not AF or DM. Innova is the one exception I know of that actually puts AF on their website.
