I will be making an appointment with the vet for Clyde on Monday morning. These numbers aren't making much sense to me. He's really high and then he's dropping like a rock. The +4 was an average of four different tests the low being 97 and the high of 133. I did a retest when the +4 came in at 97 since it was almost 150 points drop from the +2.

Last night and this morning, I took the food up after two hours to prevent grazing. I'm going to get new strips this afternoon for the meter. The ones I have will reached their expiration date next month, and were the last batch I opened just before he went into remission last year incase that is affecting them.

Is there anything else I should do before he goes to the vet? Overall I haven't notices any other symptoms such as drinking large amounts of water.

Drops like that could be a good sign - the pancreas is at work. Its just trying to figure out what Clyde is getting that high in the first place.

Have you changed what you are feeding Clyde since remission started? Make sure Clyde is not able to get into anything high carb, if there is hard food available, even low carb, maybe get that out of the picture for a little bit to see if it makes a difference. Make sure to feed low carb wet right now to see how low feeding can hold him.

I would think your strips should be good because they haven't expired, but since you are seeing such a wide range in one test time, it might be a good idea just to get a fresh pack of strips to make sure it isn't the strips.

It is a good sign that Clyde isn't staying in those high numbers all the time! Good luck with that vet appointment.

Since the initial DX, he and Max (the civvie) have both been fed the exact same thing - EVO 95% Chicken & Turkey Cat Food which is about 2% carbs. I haven't seen anything that indicates it was reformulated over the last year and I don't have any high carb cat food/snacks or dry kibble in the house so I don't think he's getting into anything high carb.

I would typically put down about 3oz of the EVO 2x per day per cat and leave it out until the next mealtime so they could eat at their leisure. Last night and this morning I picked up the food after two hours so they couldn't graze.

Beyond blood work and a general wellness exam, is there anything in particular I should ask they do, or look for in the blood work that would be telltale signs that he is coming out of remission?

Clyde is definitely not making much sense today. I did get a new pack of strips. He hasn't eaten anything since the AMGB and although it dropped considerably during the day he's now back up to 253 at +10.

Monday he's definitely going to the vet. Hopefully she can get me in quickly.

Bloodwork is going to be the main thing. Maybe urinalysis in case there is a UTI brewing that is causing problems, infections can cause BGs to go up.

Sounds like you are doing everything to get a handle on this. Hopefully whatever is going on you've caught it early on and can get it turned back around quickly.

Thank you...at this point, until he sees the vet I have no idea what is going on other then his BG is all over the place. His PMBG was 315, then he ate and at +2 he's down to 214. Bouncing all over the place can't be good for him. I will try and get a couple more tests in tonight and tomorrow so I have more information when I call the vet on Monday.

Hi Will!

Nice to see you, but i'm sorry Clyde's having high blood sugar.

Kudos, though, on catching it quickly.

The things I'd ask the vet to check for that might cause a cat to come out of remission - dental issues and bladder infections are common; if he shows signs of pancreatitis, you might want to get the spec fPL to check for it. The Primer on Pancreatitis can help you decide if that might be something he should be checked for. Note that if he's going to be checked with the spec fPL, he needs to fast for 12 hrs before the vet visit and blood test.

Any kind of infection could be the culprit.

Good to know he didn't get into any contraband - that's another common cause. Does he go outside? I had a cat on a constant diet (Felix at 24lbs) and eventually i found out the neighbor fed their cat in the garage and left the garage door up a few inches. Fatty Felix was sneaking in and eating there. Any chance Clyde could be doing something like that?

Hi Julie!
It's nice to see you as well. I've been lurking around here but not posting much.

Thank you, I'm just hoping I caught it quickly...I missed his Oct check. :( Things just really got crazy.

They are both indoor only cats. I think they're both scared of the outdoors at this point. The only time they go outside is in a carrier to the vet. :)

I looked at the symptoms for pancreatitis on the primer...the short answer is I don't know. Based on the symptoms, I don't think he has it, but I don't know.

He doesn't seem to have most of them. The only symptom he appears to have is lethargy but he's always seemed to be a little lethargic and it doesn't appear to be worse then normal. I think I will see what she says before I get the spec fPl test. Since it's unlikely I will get in on Monday, I will be able to have him fast before the vet visit so he will be ready for that if she this is possible he may have pancreatitis.

The only other thing that I know of that has happened to him that was out of the ordinary is a couple of weeks ago, in the middle of the night a heard a thud, something hit the open bedroom door, and then a mournful howling/caterwauling start. I found him in the spare bedroom on the floor sitting on his haunches looking around like he was scared out of his wits as he howled. He let me pick him up and as I petted him, he calmed down and went back to normal. At 2am, I chalked it up to something like Max pushing him out of bed while he was a sleep and scaring him.

Will

hmmm, have you palpated his body & legs to see if he responds like anything hurts? I wonder if that fall did something.

Re: 11/15 Clyde AMBG 219 +6 111 +8 160 +10 253 PMBG 315 +2 2

I've tried that and he doesn't respond like he's in pain. If I pick him up he's extremely docile and doesn't meow or cry or anything, but at the same time all he does is lay on my bed and doesn't move much from that spot.

I just did +4 check for the night and he's down to 135. It's like he's eating and his BG is going down, so at least his pancreas has some function.

Re: 11/15 Clyde AMBG 219 +6 111 +8 160 +10 253 PMBG 315 +2 2

are you feeding him small frequent meals? that might ease the load on his pancreas if it's struggling.

it's a good sign that he can bring his bgs down some.

Re: 11/15 Clyde AMBG 219 +6 111 +8 160 +10 253 PMBG 315 +2 2

I try but I don't think he's eating them. Today I was home all day to watch them and split up the food manually instead of using the timed feeder. Max came out every time to eat. Clyde only came out right after the PMBG.

Re: 11/15 Clyde AMBG 219 +6 111 +8 160 +10 253 PMBG 315 +2 2

is it pretty typical that he's not that interested in food, or is that unusual?

any sign that his mouth might hurt when he eats?

Re: 11/15 Clyde AMBG 219 +6 111 +8 160 +10 253 PMBG 315 +2 2

Hard to say...I usually don't watch them eat so I don't know if this is normal for him or not to come out during the day. He may not like the fact I was putting out the food instead of the timed feeder. I don't see anything obvious that something hurts when he eats but he's the one that would typically eat any cat food that was left out.

Re: 11/15 Clyde AMBG 219 +6 111 +8 160 +10 253 PMBG 315 +2 2

i think i'd try to observe him eating tomorrow. Punkin grew this weird thing in his mouth - we thought it was cancer but it turned out to be nothing except a growth. He'd eat on the other side to avoid it. He also ate on one side if any tooth bothered him and sometimes he would tip his head to the side to work food away from a spot.

Just thinking that dental things are pretty common. If something hurts that might be a reason for not wanting to eat.

I'm just trying to brainstorm some things for you to get ready for the vet visit.

No problem..thank you. The more I know about what it could be, the better prepared I will be to have an intelligent conversation with the vet about his care.
