11/14 PM spot check 38!!!

Max was acting super lovey but very much demanding food this evening. Decided to spot check and to my surprise was 2.1 mmol (38).

Immediately gave food and did another test at +30mins, up to 3.8....

This is the first time ever seeing such low numbers, so any advice would be super appreciated. Not sure if 911 tag is warranted.... let me know and i can remove....

@Christie & Maverick I gave his normal PM food - so a full can of FF pate 1%carb, plus dry DM which is 15%carb. he ate them both in full immediately

I also put out some 10% gravy and he licked it and was not interested in it. about to test again!

Great catch.
You have earned a reduction in dose down to 1.25 units.
Why are you giving a different dose in the am to the pm?
I see you are giving 1.5 in the am and 1 unit at night.

Edit....because you are giving different doses night and morning, the reduction dose may change.
I'll get back to you on that.

All good now it appears, you can remove the 911 :). When the dust settles, let's see if we can get you dosing consistently both am and pm, and congratulations on the reduction!

@Bron and Sheba (GA) that was our vet's instruction based on the last curve we did. She was concerned we wouldnt be accurate on the 1.25 measurements. I agree we should be doing matched doses in the AM and PM so I think we will start that tomorrow AM.

Im going to presume we are going with NS tonight....

Could I also suggest it is important to get before bed tests when you can, most kitties like to go lower at night, so you need to see how low the dose is taking the kitty, not so much dosing based on the preshot numbers. It is possible that your vet is more familiar with the in and out insulins, but Lantus works differently because it is a depot insulin.

Could I ask which date you made the switch human meter? It would be good to separate the data on your spreadsheet to reflect the readings which are via human meter...just add a row and say switched to human meter. As for your shot tonight, it sounds like others may be shortly, and let's see where you are at with your preshot.

Another small favour to ask, most of the people here follow the US system of measurement, so your Imperial readings are multiplied by 18. I'm Canadian so I recognized the numbers, as did Bron who is in Australia :).Your last test is 140 @ +11.5.

If it's not too much trouble, when you are posting Max's test numbers, can you use mg/dL (US format)? It will get more attention when numbers are low. Many people do not open spreadsheets and even more can't decipher the mmol//L numbers. The membership is largely US based and we're not so good about metric.

(And Christie was posting as I was writing.)

When was the last time you gave Max food?

Sure did :)

@Marje and Gracie Totally understand on the no differing doses. Makes complete sense to me. Just confirming you would suggest we do 1.0U for AM and PM going forward right now? We were figuring it would be 1.25/1.25? I just ordered calipers on Amazon :)

If Max was getting 1.5u in the a.m. and 1u in the p.m. that is 2.5u a day. If you give 1.25u a.m. and p.m., you are still giving 2.5u a day. When we drop doses back, we do it by 0.25u a.m. and p.m. So, if you had been giving 1.25u a.m. and p.m. (2.5u per day) then the reduction would be 0.25u each shot or 1u a.m. and 1u p.m.

Does that make more sense?

Good luck with the reduction.
Sorry I had to rush off earlier but I had school pick up and I can’t be late.
Thanks @Marje and Gracie for sorting out the dose.

I see you haven’t been getting any or many tests in during the pm cycle
Cats often drop lower at night so I would make it a routine to get a before bed test in if you can.
If the ‘before bed’ or the +2 test is the same or lower than the Preshot then the cycle will probably be an active one so you will need to set the alarm and test later in that cycle.

275 @ +1

We will definitely start to get more evening tests in. Our work schedules are a bit strange so our PM dose has historically been around an hour before we go to sleep.

Are you able to change you shot times to make it easier to get tests in either before or after work or before bed.
Any inbetween tests are good.
For example +2, +10 and +11 are good tests and all give us good data.

If you need to make a substantial change in shot time, let us know. You may not be able to immediately switch to the new time due to the way Lantus works -- an early shot acts like a dose increase whereas a late shot acts like a dose reduction.
