Hello LL!!

Yesterday: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=128378

Well, Billie had another coughing episode last night. So, that's two incidents this week that I know about. Last night was worse. The other one was a single fit that ended pretty quickly and she was done, but last night, she was coughing a few times in a row on and off for maybe 20 minutes, and she seemed more distressed by it. I don't know what might have triggered it.

She is feeling great today - she did a lot of playing this morning, her appy is normal, and she is napping on the window seat now.

I think I want to get the Flovent inhaler with the Aerokat. I think/hope her asthma is mild enough that the inhaler alone will work. From what I understand, because the steroid is inhaled directly to the lungs, it shouldn't have the systemic side effects of oral pred? Is that right? I want to minimize BG effects but also want to avoid the immunosuppressive effects. She got a UTI after being on the pred last time around.

I am wondering if anyone here has experience with Flovent and if you think it is a better option than oral pred. I am going to PM Melissa and post on the main health forum as well. I have a call out to her vet - I want to order the Aerokat and also want to get some oral pred to have in case she gets a lot worse over the weekend.

Sending vines to all the cats and beans needing vines!

Re: 11/14 Billie AMPS 272 +3 184 coughing again - Flovent?

Hi

My cat remi uses the aerokat and Flovent and I would say that once he got used to it he did really well on it and has never had an asthma attack like you describe since and as far as I can tell does not affect his insulin dosage at all. The reason remi I ended up here was long term use of oral steroids, not just for asthma but also for IBD.

if the diagnosis has been made I would go ahead and start treatment as asthma is a progressive disease and so you want to get inflammation until control sooner rather than later. I would add that even if symptoms disappear with treatment you should still seek to make your house as allergen free as possible as it is my understanding that it can still progress unnoticed.

Honestly once billie is used to the aerokat it is a simple treatment and should cause you no fuss at all.

Best wishes

Sarah

Darn on the coughing. I'm glad Billie is still feeling well, playing and eating normally.

I will be interested to hear how things go with the Flovent. My vet has never suggested it with Minka, but I'd like to try it - I worry so much about keeping her on Pred for so long.

Sending anti-coughing vines!

Sorry that Billie's got some coughing going on. Sounds like Flovent might be a solution. Don't have any experience myself, though.

Glad she's feeling good.

Have a good weekend, Deanna.

Thank you Sarah, Tricia and Marilyn for the visits. Sarah, thanks so much for sharing your experience! That is very good to know. I am glad Remi is doing well with the Aerokat.

I did get the prescription for Flovent today, and I am ordering the Aerokat. I should have that by Tuesday, and Billie is on 2.5 mg of oral pred once a day in the meantime. I was debating whether or not to start it since I didn't hear her cough at all today. But, last night's episode was pretty scary and it came out of nowhere, so I went for it. She immediately remembered the routine from her last round of pred and had that "oh no. not this again." reaction, so she probably only got a half dose in her mouth and the rest on her fur considering the scuffle. Sorry Billie.

Hopefully, Billie will get used to the inhaler! Sarah, I will probably PM you to ask you how Remi got used to it

I hope everyone had a nice day! Sending vines to all the cats and beans needing vines.

Poor Billie!! I'm sure that must scare her, too. I hope the pred will work until the flovent is available. Good idea to contact Melissa. She's done a great job getting Little T's asthma under control and keep his BGs good.

I hope she does better tonight.

I know what you mean about starting the oral steroid but if he is coughing then in effect he is having an asthma attack and that can get pretty dangerous pretty quickly. Plus the Flovent takes a while for a cat to get used to and about 10 days to build up in their lungs and so the oral pred is the way to go in the meantime.

You will find the Flovent expensive unless you get it from somewhere like fourcorners pharmacy. This is the place pretty much everyone on the yahoo asthma groups use. You need a prescription the first time you order.
