Good morning

Tansi had a pretty good day yesterday. He was out prowling for food and would eat a few bites here and there. Supplementing with syringe but still not eating enough. Today I will look for baby food again. I know onions etc are bad. Every protein jar I found also contained rice flour. All the cans of tuna have salt.
Are either of these ok?
His numbers also were better yesterday.
This morning he is really out of it again and wouldn't look at food.
Just gave mirataz and bupre
AMPS in 30 mins

Have a lovely day

Cindy --

I'm not sure where you are located. In the US, Gerber or Beechnut Stage 2 food is all protein, broth, and in some cases, a bit of cornstarch. Without knowing much of the background on what's going on with Tansi, if your kitty will eat the baby food, if it has some starch in it, I would feed whatever Tansi will eat.

Do you think he's nauseated? If so, you would need something like Cerenia (maropitant) or ondansetron to help with the nausea. Giving an appetite stimulant to a nauseated cat can cause a food aversion.

I'm also a little confused. Your subject line says AMPS but your post refers to PMPS.

Hi there
Oops yes I meant AMPS
I am in Canada. I will head out to a big grocery store this morning and look for a better selection of bsby food.
Yes, he is taking cerenia for nausea.
Thanks!

I think you have Trader Joe’s in Canada. Is there one near you? They sell tuna in water salt free.
Do you have a food processor? You could bae a chicken thigh and grind it. Maybe he will like that. Beech it is lower carbs but my cats never liked it. The carb count in Gerbers is pretty low even though it contains cornstarch. My cats have liked it but some were picky as to the flavor. Happy hunting.

I hope he improves some each day. For many it takes time. :bighug:

Hi Elise
No trader joes here unfortunately
I am going to try baking the chicken in any case.
Do you think his cerenia dose is too low? Only 8mg every 24?
The vet won't reply on the weekend.

I never found an acceptable babyfood for cats in BC. A friend (and member here) made some for me with boiled chicken purred with the chicken water to make a paste. She added the TC Feline premix and turned it into a complete cat food, but you don’t need to worry about that at this point. The Tiki-Cat Velvet Mousse in pouches are an alternative some cats like. I think one of them has fish in it.

That dose sounds right. How much does he weigh? It just doesn’t always work for nausea. I understand it’s very expensive but maybe if you add ondansetron for a week you can get over this hump?

Thanks
I did ask for the ondansteron in the first place but the vet preferred cerenia. See if I can get some monday when i pick up more bupre.
Good to know cerenia dose is appropriate.
Have a nice day

You could wash off the tuna to get rid of the salt perhaps? Too bad you didn’t have a Trader Joe’s. I bought the no salt tuna. They don’t overcharge for it and I gave a littlemTo Micha who has allergies when I made a salad for me. She loved it.

It's so great when kitty enjoys food, I didn't realize how great it us to know baby ate and enjoyed.
Do I remove the skin from chicken?
I think if I boil instead of bake it will be easier to puree with chicken water if necessary.

I could never find appropriate baby food in the past here in AB but haven't looked in a few years. As Wendy said, the Tiki Mousse seems to be a good option, it is well-blended, and I recall a few members saying their cats liked it.

As to Cerenia dose, how much does Tansi weigh?
6.5 kg
He will not even look at food today, he had one or two bites.
How much do i syringe feed
I boiled some skinless turkey thighs and blended with the broth in magic bullet. He didn't want any pieces.
I will syringe him after pmps shortly
Should I give him more mitrazapine?
He only gets one dose in the morning

It's been many years since I needed to syringe feed, here is an info post. What capacity syringes to you have? I did have some success with putting food on my finger and having cat lick off, as well as a little on a spoon, and holding up the plate. Here's the link

Syringe feeding

Feed small amounts at one time. You want to try and get him over the course of 24 hours to eat at least half his normal amount and 3/4 is better. Max was 16 pounds and his cerenia dose was 8mg.

Here they sell them at the pet food stores. Sometimes you find them in the bird section. Online pet supply stores also have good syringes too.

Look on Amazon.

Can you cut off the top a little more? Maybe file it with a nail file after cutting so he doesn't get scratched?
Lol, yes i just tried that and it squeezed together the edges and shut it off permanently hahaha
So I used a 1 ml syringe that I had from the bupre and it actually worked much better. I just had to draw up 10 times.

Cerenia is dosed at 1 mg/lb. of body weight although there is a range that is acceptable depending on the severity of symptoms. It’s wonderful if there’s vomiting, but Ondansetron is best usually if it’s just nausea. Ondansetron can be constipating - just a warning.

Yes I get mine from Amazon

I will admit to reusing them a few times

I have these soft, silicone tipped feeding syringes from Innovet per products. They are the best I have ever tried and are so soft in kitty’s mouth. Unfortunately, I think they’re out of stock now. I have been trying to find them for you tonight.

Thanks for that info
I am going to try to get some Monday
