Good morning guys! Ovie's AMPS is 210. He seems happy this morning, exploring the house, and bird watching. I did notice he seems constipated though. What do you use for kitty constipation?

Nice AMPS, hope you see some blues today! I use a teaspoon or so of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling kind with spices, just plain pumpkin) in Asia's food. I know a lot of people here use the bigger guns, but it's very infrequent for Asia and a spot of pumpkin always seems to help move things along for her.

I'm hoping for blues today too. :cool:Thank you. I will try that out. :cat: Is constipation common in sugar kitties?

We use 1" hairball laxative (Laxatone but any other brand should work) - daily - it doesn't fix the hard stool but makes it easier for Toro to pass it out.
100% Pumpkin works if kitty will accept it (NOT Pumpkin for pies as that one has other ingredients, too) - you can find it canned at Walmart.
Psyllium Husk Powder (capsules, sugar free, from Walmart) works too but I can't give you advises on dose - as far as I remember we used to give half capsule in the morning and half in the evening, with food - if your kitty will accept the food mixed with the powder. Our feeling was the Psyllium Husk increased the BG numbers - not sure if was true but we stopped using it.

I will try the pumpkin first and go from there. Ovie is kind of a food snob so I have a feeling he will turn his nose up to it. Lol.

It sure seems like everyone here has an issue with it. Pumpkin is a great place to start. I used to freeze it in ice cube trays, and just thaw a cube when needed. Hope you see those blues... I bet you will! :cool:
Great idea about the freezing the pumpkin. I will do that.

This is his first time being constipated that I know of.

I think we will see blues today too :cool:

There does seem to be a significant number of FD kitties with constipation issues.

Cats have a poor thirst reflex and with excessive urinating most kitties with FD experience this can lead to chronic dehydration, which in turn may lead to constipation. (at least that's how I reason it)
I never had a problem with George, I took some precautions;
I add a little extra water to all his meals/snacks, George is the opposite of a food snob, I make most of his meals quite soupy to make sure he gets a lot of water, this is also helpful for his kidneys (he has early/stage 2 CKD), he also has a water fountain and he loves that and has always used it (he doesn't like a drinking bowl as much).
A couple of the low carb foods I feed have some added pumpkin, so he gets that too, I've not needed to supplement with extra pumpkin.

I put some water in his evening meal. He wasn't as enthusiastic about it lol. But he ate some.

Good tips :) thank you
