Paisley's 11/11 Condo viewtopic.php?f=9&t=56279&p=609953#p609953

She got her first dose of doxycycline for the abscess behind her ear. 1/4 tablet is very small and she didn't even notice it in her food. She's very motivated by food. She'll get the doxy when she gets her shoots.

I'll be keeping a close eye on her BG being that she's been running a bit low. That should be fun as I don't want to use her right ear and she's already annoyed with me for "torturing" her.
I know that stress and inflammation can cause an increase in BG. I seem to remember something about antibiotics affecting BG. Anyone know if that is true and if it is, does it increase or decrease BG?

Re: 11/12 Paisley AMPS/96 Abscess, antibiotic question

The infection will raise BG - what you want to watch for is the antibiotic working. As it starts to clear the infection, the BG will come down, sometimes quite quickly. Muffin's usually starts dropping in about 24 hrs after starting the AB, and takes maybe 2 days to get back to normal. I think this is mainly a worry if you increase insulin due to the higher numbers from the infection, you just have to watch closely as the AB starts working.

Re: 11/12 Paisley AMPS/96 +1.75/142 Abscess, antibiotic ques

Paisley decided to feed herself at +1.75 while I was playing waitress to other cats. By +2 she would certainly have starved to death (yeah, right). Hopefully I got a reading before the food kicked in.

Thanks Anne. I think that lancing and cleaning the abscess may already have had an impact. Her PM numbers were low and we've seen that in the past but not for a few days. She's been bouncing all over but I wouldn't increase her insulin because she can drop pretty fast in the PM cycle. Right now is wait and see what happens with her numbers. I'm hoping that this will help even things out. Her first doxy was 11/12 AM shot/feeding time.

Ann described what I've seen with ABs and BG numbers.

I also don't think getting blood from Paisley's other ear will make a difference. If you think about it, it really doesn't make a difference which arm your doctor uses when you get your blood drawn.
