Good evening LL-
Took Fur Ball to a new vet tonight. AMBG=79. PMBG=145. Definitely a little bit of stress but I'm pleased to see him still in a safe zone.

We were there over an hour. Sadly, we did not like her. She at least was up front and told us she could not support our decision to feed FB a raw diet, said it was 'unnecessary.' Talked about all the risks of salmonella and said "cats just don't need it." She was a huge proponent of the big manufacturers saying they had all the nutritional values down and that is what she would recommended to us. She did not care if we fed dry or wet but she wanted FB on one of their prescription diets for the 'best nutrition." Ughhh. Very disappointing.

She did recommended he lose between 3-6 pounds which we suspected. He weighed 18.25 pounds, up from 17.99 at his last vet visit on 9/11/12. He also needs a dental; his gums are red. She said she would need to do X-rays to determine if he needed any extractions. Yikes on that price tag.

Needless to say, we are not sure where to go now. At least we liked the personality of our original vet. And she was in favor of us doing a raw diet. We are thinking of going back to her for follow up lab work up and then let her do the dental. Decisions decisions.

So that is our vet update. FB continues to love life at the falls. Its hard to believe it has been 37 days!! Playing every night and just hours full of entertainment. Tomorrow they will be removing the shingles on our condo so I have a feeling he will spend the day under the bed. He is NOT a fan of loud noises. Then, all the racket that will come when they add the shingles. Gonna be a rough week for the boy.

Hope everyone is doing well. Won't have to much time checking condos tonight.

Sorry the new vet doesn't seem to be working out. Neko's vet doesn't approve of raw either, so we agree to disagree on that topic. At least she doesn't push the prescription diets. More and more people are feeding raw here and she'd be out of patients if she turned them away. I have to bite my tongue when they mention salmonella, because the last cat food recalls for salmonella were all in dry food. I have a second vet who did recommend raw for my civie Theo. Long story made short, the last two male cats I've had were originally terrified of men, so I went to an all female practice for them. That way I have a backup vet for Neko if I want. It's always good to remember that the vet works for you.

Good luck on the dental. An x-ray before hand can be a good thing to see if there is something hidden at play.

Nice numbers for FB, until the stress. Aren't you glad you won't have to hall him out from under a bed to test tomorrow!

What a great WCR for Fur Ball but yikes on the new vet. She's a little behind the times, isn't she?

I hope you find someone you like. I'm happy to see FB doing so well!

Hugs Karen!

Unfortunately, several of the vet organizations have taken a stand that doesn't support a raw diet. I'm not sure what that decision was based on. As far as the prescription diets, I had that conversation with my vet when I returned 2 cased of food. I pointed out that none of the prescription food was low carb. I could buy a commercially prepared canned food that was of better quality (i.e., no by-products) that was lower in carbs and cost less. She did not push the issue.

You may want to take a look at this info on dentals.

Thanks for the visit and the input. It is so hard trying to get good care for our furry babies when the vets seem to oppose your decisions. We still believe the raw diet is the best, especially since cats are carnivores, but I didn't like this vet taking the superior stance and telling us we were wrong for our decision and even going so far as to say we were putting our entire household at risk for salmonella poisoning. At least this was a free intake and we don't have to go back!

Thanks for the dental link Sienne. After you sent it, I remembered reading it a long time ago on another condo. Now I have it saved for our next vet adventure!

Hope everyone has a great day!

Sorry you had such a bad experience with the new vet. It is hard when the vet doesn't agree with how we take of our kitties. That was one of the reasons I switched to a new vet. I'm glad Fur Ball is still doing so well and being playful. Hopefully tomorrow won't be too stressful for him.

Karen, I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with this vet. I'm glad you at least have another to go to. Some people on here, are stuck with one vet in town.
I had a terrible experience with a new vet in the clinic I go to. He also stuck his haughty, superior nose in the air, and mocked me for calling .10 unit, a microdrop....informing me, that insulin is dosed in units, not drops. DUH!

Good luck with the old vet, if you choose to go back there.
