Well I guess the freezing didn't hurt too badly considering China's numbers this morning! Think I'm going to go ahead and reduce her tonight..not sure if I'll go to .5 or a skinny .75 but probably will try the .5

China IS finally eating better. I figured after she got a little more used to being in a hotel room, she'd probably eat better. It's really nice having her here...she spends her time snoozing on the bed with me or sitting on top of me and chatting in her little Siamese type voice with me.

Overnight, the temperature outside went from the high 60's to the teens...YUCK!!!! All I have with me is a light windbreaker too! I'm not feeling too good this morning so am just taking it easy and resting. I'm shaky and really tired....Like I told others, when the adrenaline wears off, I'm going to be a quivering mass of goo and that's kind of how I feel this morning.

Going to take a nap and then roll over and snooze for awhile. I don't think I'm "sick" but I am running a temp and feeling pretty awful. It's not unusual for me to run a temp when I'm super-tired, but it makes me figure I'd better stay here until I feel better and not risk taking anything to Mom

When I first read the temperatures, I thought you mean China's numbers.  I'm glad she's doing good and the insulin is okay. I hope you can rest some and start feeling better. Sending prayers for you and your Mom.

Nice to see the Lantus is still good. I hope you can get some rest. Just like I did, you have worn yourself out and made your body susceptible to germs. I just hope you can get some rest and feel better. :YMHUG:

Woot!! On China's numbers - well done girl cat!   So happy your Lantus is still OK. Do you have a vial or pens?

Sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. Stress can really do a number on us and all those visits to the hospital does add to the germ exposure. Take care of yourself. I hope you mom continues to improve.

Thanks for the visits Carla, Donna and Wendy

Yes, China's doing great! Wish maybe she'd surf just a tiny bit higher so I don't have to worry about her, but she's never gone too horribly low when I couldn't be around to watch her, so I don't expect her to do it now

I think more than anything, I'm just plain exhausted and suffering from stress. I don't know what to do with mom at this point. She's not interested in eating anything, and I've offered to bring her anything she wants. If she doesn't get some calories into her, she's never going to heal or get stronger. I'm worried that she's giving up. I know that after major surgery like this, depression is all too common, and if I can't get her to snap out of it, she isn't going to get better and be able to realize the benefit of all this surgery. She should be able to have a much more active life after all this, but we have to get her out of this funk first.

I'm happy the insulin seems to be good even after the freeze, but have to wonder for how long it'll remain good. Guess I'll just watch the numbers!!

hmm... any kids to visit her.... that helps most of us feel less depressed....
the younger the better.....

I wish I could get my son and DIL to bring down her only great-grandchild....she turned 1 on Oct 3rd, but they were just down here a couple of weeks ago, and it's a major expense that they just can't afford. Aspen also isn't much of a "traveler"...unlike most kids, she doesn't sleep when the car is moving.

My son is a truck driver and DIL is a teacher, so weekends are "family time". If I could, I'd help them pay to come down again, but as it is, I'm not sure how I'm going to pay my own bills with the cost of the hotel I'm staying in added to my budget this month...and if freezing the Lantus does start causing problems, there's another cost I don't know how I'm going to pay. My income is only $710/month and the hotel is almost $100 a night, but I don't feel comfortable being too far away just yet.

Mom's 84th birthday is tomorrow too. They're supposed to be making a little birthday cake for her, but I don't know if we'll be able to get her to eat any.

China's handling the stress much better than us beans are, that's for sure!!

Have you thought about seeing if she would drink Ensure? My grandmother was having to drink it a good bit when her dementia got really bad. Its at least something to look into.

Re: 11/12 China AMPS 182,PMPS 203,+2.5 128

We tried the Ensure today, but because her BG is high, they gave her the sugar free kind (Yuck)...She'd only take a couple sips and that was that. They told me she needed to eat, and when I suggested the one thing she's always been willing to try (a chocolate shake) they brought up her blood sugar again. They can't have it both ways..either it's more important to get her to eat SOMETHING, or you want her to only eat stuff that's low sugar. Personally, I think it's more important to get calories into her than it is to worry about her blood sugar. Just like our kitties, you treat the most important problem first, and adjust the insulin to fit

But I'm just her daughter...they don't listen a whole lot to me. There's a frozen custard place not too far from here...I think tomorrow I'll go down there and see what they have that might be sugar free and taste good too...but if they don't have something, I'm going to just get her the chocolate shake and let them worry about her BG

Looks like China might have another active night in her tonight too! Good thing I stopped and got some more high carb food! (and some pancake syrup from the breakfast bar this morning just in case)

Figured since she'd bounced to 203, I'd go ahead and give the skinny .75 tonight and then reduce in the morning

I hope you get feeling better Chris. You have a lot on your plate right now and it does wear you down. So take care of yourself.
China is being such a good girl, she knows her mama Bean is having a hard time and wants to help how she can cat_pet_icon
Good luck finding something your Mom will eat.
Have a nice night Chris.

Rhiannon, this is what they're giving her http://www.boost.com/nutritional-drinks/boost-glucose-control

We're going to try freezing it overnight and seeing if it improves the flavor....may try adding a little milk and making it into a "milk-like shake"

The biggest problem is the anesthesia. It makes her have no appetite and makes things taste different too. So even things that she usually likes taste strange and unappealing. They said it's a pretty common problem, and since she had 3 anesthesia's in 3 days, it may just take time to wear off

On top of that, I think she's becoming depressed (also a pretty common problem especially with older people who've had serious surgeries) She wasn't expecting all this...The idea she had was they'd do the cardiac cath, put in a couple of stints and send her home. Neither of us was thinking she'd need anything close to all she's had, and then on top of the bypass, her heart's electrical system not working and having to add the pacemaker. I think it's just so much for her to process and she's not able to see far enough in the future to imagine how much better she should feel once it's all over and done with. She just doesn't seem to be fighting...and my Mom has always been a fighter, so to see her look so resigned is hard

Went to Bob Evan's tonight to get myself something closer to a real meal for a change. Wasn't at all interested in another bag shoved through another drive through window. Had a nice piece of grilled chicken, baked potato and green beans with ham...and instead of a dinner roll, they offered banana bread so I took that. I know mom likes banana bread, so I had them wrap up a piece and will take it to her tomorrow.

Having China here has been the best!! She's not usually a real "huggable" kitty, but when I've needed to have a hug, she's let me hold her, squeeze her and even kiss her on the forehead...all things too wishy-washy for a diva like China. She seems to know I need it right now, and is putting up with me cat_pet_icon

Thanks Pam...I'm trying to stay positive for her but I am getting a bit worn down at this point

Re: 11/12 China AMPS 182,PMPS 203,+2.5 128

I'm sorry to hear your mom won't eat. I will send extra prayers for her. Is there a gelato shop anywhere nearby? It's extra yummy and creamy and they often make sugar free flavors. She's been through so much. My DBIL had a bypass and also went through a depression....and he's a lot younger. It has to be hard to think of the rehab ahead.

Glad China is doing well :-D

Doesn't look like any of the ice cream places here carry gelato. Only ice cream, frozen custard and frozen yogurt, but I know they have some sugar free flavors so maybe I'll go try a few "samples" and see if any of them are as good as the real thing

Yes, what worries me most is her giving up. If I can keep her going and strong enough to go back to the nursing home, they do have a psychologist that I can ask to keep an eye (or ear) on her

Thanks for the extra prayers. She has always been a strong woman, but this has really hit her hard

I can only imagine how hard it must be for her. My mom is only one year older and I can't imagine her making it through something like your mom has.

I'm sorry you are getting so run down Chris. A nap and a rollover into a snooze is exactly what your poor body needs. I-) Good girl China for continuing to be an amazing kitty cat_pet_icon Would your mom eat toast with some preserves? Maybe with a nice tea served? Just to get the ball rolling. I have often found just plain old toast with peanut butter or a jam will stimulate the appetite. I am continuing to send prayers your way for you, your mom and China. Are you eating Chris? Please take care of yourself. :YMHUG: As the saying goes, you have to take care of yourself 1st before you can care for others. :YMHUG: :YMHUG:
