11/12 Callie AMPS 311, +4.25 153, +8.25 65, +8.75 69

+9.75 63. Since she still wasn't going up and we are going into the two hours without food before PMPS, I gave her 1/8 tspn of her HC (35%) mixed into her LC snack. Hopefully that will keep her in safe numbers without food.

Her numbers are looking good considering that PFS a couple of days back!

I see the note in your SS about starting Levemir at 50% of the Lantus dose instead of 70%. You don't want to start at too low a dose. It doesn't take glucose toxicity any time to set in. You test enough so there is no need to drop the dose so much when switching.

I was really upset after that PFS ... so I am extra grateful that her numbers are what they are now.

Re: Levemir: I'm having a hard time figuring out whether it would be better to switch. Lantus seems to sting Callie some of the time :( I've tried warming the filled syringe for a bit in my hand and I vary where I shoot so I'm thinking it is the acidic base. BUT Callie is finally doing well for longer periods of time (anti jinx!!!) so I hate to make a change that could mess with that.

And there's the prob you mentioned - our new vet would prefer that we start at 50% rather than 70% of the Lantus dose if we switch. I agree with you that we don't want to start too low (and that prob is) ... but he has been so great about everything else that Callie has going on that I hate to rock the boat too much about this. I don't know. I am really not sure what's best.

You switched from Lantus to Levemir with Bandit, right? What made you make the change?

Do you need to share that much information with the vet? Does he have access to your SS? Can you just nod and say yes and do your own thing?

I switched because I hoped Bandit would flatten out with Levemir. Some cats do, but she didn't. But I do think she gets better duration with Levemir.

I did send him a link to the SS but I'm honestly not sure he looks at it. He really doesn't bother too much with her dose/diabetes. I just think he's less comfortable in general with Levemir because he hasn't used it as much as Lantus so he wanted to be conservative in case Callie has a big reaction to the switch.

Interesting about Lev and duration. I think duration has been an issue for Callie too although sometimes it is hard for me to figure out whether something is a bounce or lack of duration.

I think I'll prob order the Lev to have it available and keep a close eye on Callie's reactions to the Lantus shots. If the shots seem to really be painful for her, I'll figure out how best to handle the dose prob and we'll make the switch. I was really hoping to be getting dose reductions before stinging became an issue :(

The 70% is to accommodate a strong reaction to Levemir. That's why we don't switch at the same dose as Lantus. And like I said, you test enough. :-)
