Re: 11.12.13 Shadow AMPS 83

Awesome. And so glad you shot it. I think this drop will help give him some more healing time til he can go it on his own.
All exhale now.
But he gave you lessons on what he can/can't do. What he can sure do is bounce right back if there ever is a blip.
Go Shadow!!

Hi guys .. woohooo, these are the numbers we like to start the day with! have a great day guys!

Re: 11.12.13 Shadow AMPS~83 +5~71

Shadow seems to be doing fine. I came home at AM+5 and tested him. The first test said LO so I retested and got a 71. I'm not sure what this is about but the Relion Micro manual says LO indicates BG levels less than 20 or that there might not have been enough blood on the test strip. The retest was more in the range I was expecting so I think we're all good. I gave him a minimal dose of Lantus this morning at PMPS (85) just for continuity which his data indicates would likely not take him below 50. I fed him some LC wet food and will retest at PMPS. I'm sticking around the rest of the day so he will be watched. No signs of hypo at all.

Re: 11.12.13 Shadow AMPS~83 +5~71

Looks great to me! Yep it sounds like that Lo must have been a bad test...if you tested again immediately and got the 71. That one makes more sense and you did exactly right. But I bet it is scary for a second until you figure it out.
And yes you do not have to worry as much about big swings on these teenie micro doses which is why you can feel more comfortable shooting. The whole shoot low to stay low thing. Plus if you never go below 50 you don't earn dose reductions that ultimately lead you ...(you know where) anti jinx.

I am with you on the continuity..he probably feels so much better being in those numbers all day and having the little extra support. Great job and good kitty!!

Re: 11.12.13 Shadow AMPS~83 +5~71

Hi there :-D Have I introduced myself? Kat here/nutra-sweet boy Gobbles (11 year old neutered tabby--OTJ due to FDMB, since May this year). I haven't read through your condos, but looking at Shadow's SS, I can see that you are really doing a great job managing his FD. I think you're right about there not being enough blood on the test strip when you got the LO reading. For Shadow's safety and from Gobbles' FD journey (he is currently OTJ and a diet-controlled diabetic kitty), I can give you the following advice: (1) if you can afford it, buy a back up meter (ReliOn prime has the cheapest strips--$9/50 strips..and if there's not enough blood on the strip, instead of getting a "LO", there will just be an error message)...you never know when a glucometer decides to bite the dust, battery goes or you just want to double-check low numbers, (2) a tiny dose can cause a kitty to hypo--several times when Gobbles was on as little as .25 I had to fight to keep him in safe numbers by feeding him medium/high carb foods and (3) believe it or not, some kitties show absolutely no symptoms of hypo-ing, until they are physically seizuring, comatose or worse. And OMG, believe me when I tell you how scary it is to shoot those green numbers...kudos to you for shooting an 83 today-I could have never done that a month into Gobbles' dx!!! Keep up all the awesome work you're doing!

Re: 11.12.13 Shadow AMPS~83 +5~71 PMPS~95

Hi Kat. Shadow was diagnosed 15 months ago. I trusted the vet who was trusting me and neither of us were trustworthy, so Shadow nearly hypo'd out last month. Luckily he was showing symptoms and also luckily, as it turned out, it was a weekend morning around 3 am. The vet is a ways from here and at 3am on a weekend, well.... I hit the internet and found FDMB, quickly found and read how to reverse hypo symptoms and acted on it, a little too robustly, but I got him turned around. I wouldn't shoot green at first but Shadow reacts in a consistent way to Lantus and I quickly gained confidence with how much Lantus will have how much effect. In the green, if I shoot, I only do tiny does, 0.1u or less. The vet says his diabetes is linked to his pancreatitis and its looking like his pancreas is back in business so his insulin needs are minimal or possibly nil right now, as long as he eats LC wet food. I'm going to keep him on minimum Lantus for now. Shadow's reaction to "low carb" "prescription diet" dry food is to watch his BG level skyrocket. I now think that this food is not designed to keep his numbers down but rather to minimize the risk that non-home testers will hypo their cat by accident, like I almost did a month ago. It kind of reminds me of dopers alternating between heroin and cocaine so as not to go off the deep end either direction, but remaining dopers because of these actions. Sounds like a dumb theory but that's what I see with my sample of one.
