Scratchie'smom

Yesterday

Wondering about this dose, doesn't seem to be taking. He's not up and around much, mostly sleeping - no playing. All other P's in place, good LB. I thought the pens lasted longer than the vials. This is the 30th day on this 'pen', do they not last that long?

I think it depends on how the insulin pen has been handled and was it kept refrigerated at a constant tempurature.
I've had them last around 60 days.
If you think it's the pen, then I would start a new one. I've done this on lots of occasions, just to be sure.

Come on Scratchie work that new dose. Come on down, buddy.

A pen and a vial, in principle, last the same amount of time. The pens are more economical because a box of 5 pens has more insulin than a vial. Because the pens are packaged in smaller amounts, there's less of a concern about the insulin turning bad before you use up the insulin in the pen.

Looking at Scratchie's SS, while the pens may be the issue, I think you may have held on to the 3.5u dose for too long. There's a possibility that glucose toxicity has built up given that you stayed at this dose for 2 weeks. Going forward, I think it will be important to evaluate Scratchie's dose every 3 - 5 days, depending on where the nadirs are.

Thanks Sienne, Dyana and Tara.

I was afraid it was because I held him at 3.5 too long. I did that because I had a heck of a week last week (worked close to 80 hours) and I wanted him to be 'safe' as I knew it was going to be a rough week. Selfish on my part. DH was out a lot too this last week with trips to the VA. I do keep the pen in the fridge at the same temp all the time..

How long does the toxicity last?? I could kick myself in the butt!!! Dang it!!!
