Last Night:
HI PMPS
476 +2.5
229 +5.5
279 +7

J.D. woke me up at +5 all happy because as I soon found out he had just pooed. He ate some cat treats and some MC. It was a good thing he woke me up as his Buprenex dose was due and I guess my alarm was ringing and I wasn't hearing it.
He had his syringe feedings pretty spread out last night, with his last one at 1:00am.
I'm going to try to do most of his feedings early this morning, so it's more like when I go to work, today.

Today, I will get his blood work results back.
Wish us luck on good test results, please :)

Re: 11/10 J.D. AMPS 417

Yay for poo! Detective Poo is always on the lookout for poo reports. Paws crossed here for the blood work.

Re: 11/10 J.D. AMPS 417, +2.5 310, +3.5 186

Thank you :YMHUG:

It is a gorgeous day outside and we just got back from our second walk (his first one was really short). Unfortunately, I have tons of housework and laundry to do :-| and as always I'm trying to carry my cell phone with me every where so I don't miss the phone call from the vet.

Re: 11/10 J.D. AMPS 417, +2.5 310, +3.5 186, +4.5 136

Three walks down. Back to housework..

Re: 11/10 J.D. AMPS 417, +2.5 310, +3.5 186, +4.5 136

Yay for poo! It sounds like J.D. is feeling good today. Sending tons of good BW vines.

Which Walmart did you use for fluids? My local Walmart in Princeton was no use earlier this year, but maybe I'll try yours -it's not too far to drive there to pick them up. Thanks for the info!

Re: 11/10 J.D. AMPS 417, +2.5 310, +3.5 186, +4.5 136

Feeling good should equal good BW numbers. I hope so!

Re: 11/10 J.D. +5.5 124, +6.5 118, +7.5 116

I am waiting so impatiently or is it so patiently for J.D.'s blood work results.

I called and the girl at the front desk said it has been crazy there and the results are on the vet's desk but they are short a vet this week and I asked if I could come pick them up and she said she was the only one at the front desk and to call back in a half hour. It's been 50 minutes, so I'm calling. They forget that we walk around with our cell phone every where, even the the bathroom.

Please let them be good results.

I was hoping his Spec fPL would be better. My vet said I could up his B12 dose.
At least his Magnesium is better. His kidney values aren't too bad.

Serum Spec fPL concentration is consistent with pancreatitis. The cat most likely has pancreatitis. Consider investigating for risk factors and concurrent diseases (e.g. IBD, Cholangitis, Hepatic Lipidosis, Diabetes Mellitus). Periodic monitoring of Spec fPL may help assess response to therapy.

The fPL explains the appy issues and need for nausea meds. We stopped running it for Max unless he acts sick and we need to see if something else is going on or he's having a panc episode. Since diagnosis he only had one test in normal numbers. If I had insurance I might run it now as I suspect it would be normal but it is too much money to run for that reason. I bet you have pet insurance.

No, unfortunately, I don't have pet insurance.
The Spec fPL if added to the Total Health Plus is only $19. If they try to code it as an additional test it is $99.
I've had to correct them the last 3 or 4 times at check out. Every extra $80 saved helps.

Someone on the Tanya's email group said that his WBC is high and there is a wider gap between his ALB and GLOB and that this indicates an infection brewing and that I should get right on that and wipe it out. Does that sound right to you? Also said that he is on the verge of metabolic acidosis and should continue to watch that. I asked my vet that and she said no. But, maybe she's not familiar with metabolic acidosis. What do you think?

I'm off to the grocery store, and then after AMPS I got invited out to dinner.

I am a little depressed from the BW results, so the dinner and distraction will help.

I have a call into my vet to call me back regarding the possible infection. She'll probably call me while I'm at the grocery store and I'll sound like a blithering idiot.

I don't know what the b/w results mean, but I hope if there is an infection, you can get it taken care of right away. :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

i'm sorry, i don't know that much about blood work either, and nothing about the metabolic acidosis. You might email marje and ask her to take a peek. she's good with interpreting blood tests.

i do see that JD's glucose was normal. teehee. you go girl!

hope you enjoyed your dinner out tonight.

I don't know about metabolic acidosis either, sorry. I was looking at his bloodwork overall and thinking that I bet there aren't many 20 year old cats (or even 16 year old cats) with results that good. There are a couple of things out of range, but overall I think you can be very proud of him.

I agree with the others about those BW numbers. You can read up on metabolic acidosis on tanyascrf.org. That is one thing I didn't have to deal with with my two CRF cats. Also if you haven't already ask Stacey or Maureen on the FPS list. I "think" there is a simple supplement that you add daily to help with it.

dyana, this stuff is way over my head, but wanted to mention carolyn's latte had metabolic acidosis. i bet you can reach her on FB.
here's an excellent thread she started. jess/earl was one of the members who responded: Metabolic Acidosis help

metabolic acidosis is mentioned in a thread started by michelle/doodle: Potassium supplement suggestions needed - Very frustrated!

wcf/meowzi mentions reading up on metabolic acidosis here: 7/24 Meowzi AMPS 250, PMPS 167 ... Longtimer.
i'm sure you can reach her on FB.

if i were in your shoes i'd contact carolyn/latte, jess/earl, michelle/doodle, and wcf/meowzi and ask them to post here. they probably know more about metabolic acidosis than anyone else i can think of.

Thank you for your responses and kind words.

I am typing from work, so am going by memory (what little if have) here..

J.D.'s TCO2 is high, and it's low if they have Metabolic Acidosis.
J.D.'s Anion Gap is at the low end, and it's high if they have Metabolic Acidosis.

So I guess he doesn't have that.

He does not have MA. A cat with MA has a a low TCO2 and his is high. I address this further down in this post. Also...when the lab runs TCO2 tests, they have to be careful to be sure absolutely no air infiltrates the sample so any time you get a TCO2 below 15, which would indicate a concern for MA, I'd rerun the test. That's just general info on MA tests. JD is not there.

IMHO,I think the person from Tanya's might be overreacting a tad. Labs are just a snapshot for that moment and so we watch trends. His alb and glob are both normal and have been. His glob is coming up a bit while the alb remains steady. His A:G ratio is still normal and I can't imagine why a vet would react to such a small change so I can understand your vet's dismissal of the person's comments. For me, it's something to watch but not get overly stressed about right now. If your vet thinks an a/b is necessary to address the wbcs, then I would ask why not a broad spectrum a/b instead of Baytril. I reserve the use of Baytril for urinary tract issues.

On the metabolic acidosis, if he was developing it, the TCO2 would be LOW. His is a bit high. What this tells me is he's not breathing normally to get rid of all the CO2. The most obvious reason for that is bupe. I'm not sure when you gave it to him in relation to his labs but opiates repress the respiratory system a bit and the TCO2 level might be a bit high. The other reason I would not suspect MA, is his anion gap is totally normal.

Again, I have to say his labs look remarkable for a 20 year old cat. He's steady in the HCT so that is great. Yes, it's indicstive of a bit of anemia but if you are giving the B12/B-Right caps as we've discussed, it will hopefully keep maintaining him nicely.

I think you are doing an awesome job and have nothing to be depressed or upset about.

Dyana,

You are a wonderful kitty mom. You do so well with J.D. I hope he has many more good years to come.

Terri
