Last Night:
439 PMPS
239 +7
202 +11

We went for a walk in the early morning darkness, before AMPS. J.D. ate his 1st Breffis and is now working on his 2nd Breffis at +1.

I have spent my morning on the Bloodwork tab of J.D.'s spreadsheet. I finished November 25 2011, now I just have to copy and add the other four bloodworks tests he's had this year, hopefully someday soon I'll get that done..

Off to work.

Re: 11/09 J.D. AMPS 197

Oh boy on the tests...I need to get tests too. I never requested them but now that we're in FD-land, I should go back and get the tests from January when we were adopted. Thanks for the reminder.

Nice blue J.D., Leo was only 1 point higher than you are!

Tomorrow, at 8:30am, I take J.D. in to get his Health Certificate, and I don't know what to say to the vet about J.D.'s only blood pressure check.
Since our regular vet doesn't have equipment? to check blood pressure, I went to a vet further away that does.
These are the results:
SYS - DIA - MAP
169 - 98 - 132
164 - 93 - 137
166 - 75 - 134
172 - 73 - 149
I asked the new vet that took the BP if it was good and she said "yes" and I asked what do you look for and she said "consistancy".
I asked our regular vet if the BG results were good and he said "yes" and I asked what do you look for and he said "consistancy".

I have been told on other boards that saw these results, that he might have borderline high blood pressure. How do I tell our regular vet that these results are borderline high blood pressure? Just tell him that my friends say..... ?

Other than that, J.D. ate his 1st Dinner, and all seems well.

He's actually laying in his big dog bed again  I put the little kitty bed up along side the big dog bed and he chose the bigger one tonight.

It sounds like J.D. picked out the primo spot to sleep in. Talking to your vet about the blood pressure sounds tricky. Maybe you could start a conversation about what readings are high blood pressure. Good luck.

Hi Dyana-

On the BP...I don't necessarily know that "consistency" is a great answer from the vet with regards to BP, but FWIW, I know my vet likes to see anything below 180 in the office. Even 180 is a bit high, but that accounts for a touch of "white coat syndrome" and we can assume that they are a bit lower when at home.

I'm glad all seems well there!!

Here's some info on BP from the vet school at Oklahoma State. They note that systolic BP should range from 140 - 160mmHg and diastolic <90mmHg. The link also notes that high BP isn't treated until systolic BP is over 200mmHg due to vet stress.

I don't agree with the consistency comment. They take several readings, throw out the high and low, and look at the values in the middle. Since taking blood pressure requires some cooperation on the part of the cat, a couple outliers isn't a concern. The white coat phenomenon is also a consideration, which is why they take several values. If they can't get a couple of consistent vales, then interpreting an overall blood pressure value is more challenging. So, consistency is good to have confidence in the final number, and doesn't indicate anything else. I can't comment on the actual values themselves, just what we go through with my civvies, Molly. Her first couple values are often a little higher and she might get fussy at the end. So the middle values tend to be what we settle on as a reading. I hope J.D.s values are good.
