Hello Guys,

Yesterday,
http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=55908&p=605703#p605703

You know shanga is on antibiotic treatment for his mouth... Vet gave him Zithromax pediatric suspension.... I have realized that it has sucrose ohmygod_smile
so I wanted to check if it effects his BG. I gave his zithromax last night at 12.10 am and checked his BG a hour later, it was 326
I asked to vet today if the pill would be safer for shanga... But shanga needs 50 mg in a day and pills 500 mg. So vet said: u can not make that pill straight from 500 to 50... and shanga will keep using that syrup.
But I dont feel comfortable at the moment...

Any suggestion?

Thank You,

Hi guys .. no advice on the meds from me, I am not familiar with that at all .. but that certainly is a drop from +5.5 to +6.5 .. Hope others stop by with advice for you .. have a great day!

Merhaba Hande,

How many times per day does he need the zithromax?
How long will he need to take it?

Maybe a pharmacist can make a pediatric suspension without sugars for Shanga - if you explain that he is diabetic.

Hi Sandy,

He uses already pediatric version and i give it once in a day... There is no way that pharmacist could do it...
I found this about that pill:

Zithromax
Caution in diabetic patients: 5 ml of reconstituted suspension contains 3.87 g of sucrose.

Due to the sucrose content (3.87 g/ 5 ml of reconstituted suspension), this medicinal product is not indicated for persons with fructose intolerance (hereditary fructose intolerance), glucose-galactose malabsorption or saccharase-isomaltase deficiency.

He takes 1,5 ml once in a day... It will be a long treatment. Atleast 3 weeks...

Hi, Hande ~

Well, darn it...and you were starting to see some real improvement in Shanga's blood glucose numbers. It would be a shame to lose that control with a sugary medication. There's got to be some other way, Hande.

In the US, there are some pharmacies, although not all, that will do special compounding of medications. "Maybe a pharmacist can make a pediatric suspension without sugars for Shanga - if you explain that he is diabetic." -- I like Sandy's suggestion. Are you sure that you can't find a pharmacy in Istanbul that will do this? Only a few years ago did I become aware that some of our pharmacies will do special compounding.

Another suggestion that I have, Hande, would be for you to check with some of your pharmacies to see what strength of Zithromax pills/tablets they carry. From an internet search, it seems to me that 500, 250, and 100mg tablets are available in the US and Canada. Maybe in Turkey you can find some 250 or 100mg tablets to cut for Shanga? If not, does Turkish law allow you to order from online pharmacies in other countries?

Here's how one vet is recommending that Zithromax be used to treat a different condition in a cat:

(for some reason, the complete link is being cut off: en.allexperts.com/q/Ask-Veterinarian-700/Chronic-rhinitis.htm
Zithromax...the dose is 1/4 of a 250mg tablet for a 7 pound cat (if the cat is 10-12 pounds I would just give 1/2 tab)

Bugun sizi dusunuyorum

Take care,
Eva

Hello Guys,

We just have 500 mg of Zithromax here. I went to pharmacy today to ask... Maybe I could cut the pill but pharmacy said it wouldnt be homogen... The pill doesnt contain equal azithromycin all through out it... So that didnt help me...
Dear Eva,
I completely agree with you but I dont know what to do... His mouth seems better and as you said he got improvement with his BG and I dont want to loose that... I am just tired you know, tired because everytime something happens... Its really hard to manage stomatitis and diabetes together...
I need to find someone who comes from us to turkey ASAP. so I can order...
Thank You Guys,

Big Hug from Shanga and Me

i just want to say what a great detective you are to have figured that out. those are some crazy high numbers just popping up here and there on shanga's ss.

glad you figured out what the cause is - don't know how to solve it, but at least you know why the 'playful' numbers are there.

Hello, Hande ~

If you keep seeing a correlation between dosing Shanga with the Zithromax and getting high blood glucose numbers, Hande, I wonder if you could use a fast acting insulin like R to bring those highs down more quickly? Maybe some of the experienced R users like Sandy could give their opinions on this. You're saying this medication will be needed daily for about three weeks?

Have you considered calling a few hospital pharmacies to see if they will do special compounding of liquid Zithromax without sugars? Might be worth a try.

Hang in there...you're doing a great job managing some complicated medical conditions for Shanga.

Take care,
Eva
