11/04 Monet - possible UTI ?

Hi everyone...Monet continues to do well OTJ...staying in the greens! However, I have noticed him peeing outside his litter box about once per week lately for no known reason. He has an appointment with Vet tomorrow to do at least a urinalysis to see if perhaps he has a UTI. I am concerned if he does have some sort of infection about what type of antibiotics his Vet might give him. I think I've read on here that we need to be very careful with a Kitty OTJ in regards to the meds since they can effect his being remission. Any suggestions/advice on what I need to look out for and suggestion of oK antibiotics would be greatly appreciated.

My other Kitty, Picasso, was recently diagnosed with Stage 2 CKD so I have been very busy trying to get him regulated as far as food and supplements. I have read that diabetic kitties are prone to get CKD too so I am hoping and praying that Monet does not have this too. I guess if the urinalysis comes back OK I might get Vet to do blood tests to check his BUN Aand Creatine to make sure they are not high. Please keep us in your prayers tomorrow.

I noticed you bookmarked the "where can i find ? post - at the end of the collection of posts is one from Dr. Lisa on UTI's. I'd take a look there.

We recently got a Feliway diffuser because we've got aggression issues with one of our cats. Alison/Sarge recommended the diffuser - in the past I'd used the spray and it didn't seem to work. In any case, they specifically mention the diffuser as helping with litter box issues that might be caused by stress. I have no idea if that would help Monet or not, but it might be worth trying out.

For a diabetic cat (in remission or not) you want to avoid steroids (they can cause diabetes) and sugar in any meds that are given. Just something to watch for if you get something prescribed.
 
Julie thanks for the info .... I will take a look at Dr. Lisa's pots on UTIs. Did not know that about steroids and the fact that some meds contain sugar.
 
Here are the rest of the OTJ instructions - maybe some of it wasn't on the post that was given to you when Monet went OTJ. Things do get updated now and then:

Start the trial on his next green preshot.

If he is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If he is blue, feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. If his number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then his pancreas is working!

Post every day so we can monitor your progress and see if any tweaks are needed. It is not unusual for cats to get lots of blue during their trial, especially at first. Don't panic and don't shoot unless we tell you to.

After 14 days of no insulin, we have a party!

Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens, we just give him the support he needs. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.

If he gets through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Your cat is still diabetic, but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low-carb food and small meals for the rest of his life. Avoid medications with sugar in them and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood sugar weekly for the next few months and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him monthly. His weight should remain stable. If he seems "off" or sick, or is showing symptoms of diabetes (excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss) test his blood sugar right away. Keep the teeth clean; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission.

If you see rising blood sugar numbers, post here before you restart insulin and ask for advice on how to proceed.

I don't think occasional outside the box indicates UTI, sounds more like stress. Tess gets UTIs frequently and it is repeated trips to the box or squatting w/just a little pee because it hurts. Sometimes she will just move a foot or two and squat again. Often w/ a pink tinge to the urine.
 
If you can catch Monet in the box, it may help to answer some questions. There have been times when Gabby's aim is off. She has her butt too high and she's too close to the edge of the box. As a result, there's a puddle of pee outside of the box. The other contributing factor for some cats is arthritis. If they aren't able to crouch as well, they may be uncomfortable climbing into the box.
 
Hi Sienne... The times I have actually caught Monet just squatting and doing it outside of his box. Maybe I am just paranoid since Picasso was just diagnosed with CKD and that is one of the first signs you might notice. Monet is getting older so arthritus could be coming into play especially since their litter box is a step up to use (we have the Litter Robot). Hooefully today the Vet will rule out anything medically and Monet was just being a "bad boy" nailbite_smile
