11/04 Mia AMPS 117; +4 89; PMPS 101

About three weeks ago, when Mia began consistently inching up out of green, I speculated perhaps a UTI. Urine test showed enterococcus, but no appreciable increase in white blood cells, so I chose to NOT administer an antibiotic. During this same time, she began drinking more water, which is still happening. Any input on what else might cause her to appear more lethargic and drink more IF she has no known underlying infection? If I do give her amoxicillin, how does that usually affect blood glucose?

More drinking can be from a UTI. Is she peeing more? Any colour change in the pee? Any smell change? Other thoughts on drinking more are nausea (but you would see appetite impact), kidney disease, possibly hyperT.

Amoxicillin doesn't usually impact BG, unless it's been compounded with sugar in it. Cats (and humans) can get nausea because the antibiotic also kills the good flora with the bad, so it's a good idea to supplement with a probiotic - given a couple hours apart from the probiotic. I've had to give a kitty s. boulardii when giving amoxicillin due to diarrhea.

I hope you get some answers Janet. How is Mia feeling? Increased urine or any straining or litter box accidents?

Thank you โ€ฆ no vocalizing or straining .. increased urine, but increased drinking. Itโ€™s all kind of up and down, which is why I havenโ€™t put her on an antibiotic yet.

Thanks for the tips. No color change, no smell change, a little bit more peeโ€ฆ but more drinking, so that I guess I would expect. Her appetite has slowed down, but as soon as I put some forti flora on it and she smells it she gobbles it right down. I guess Iโ€™ll go ahead and put her on the amoxicillin, and supplement her with the Visbiome I already have for my IBD Kitty. Her last labs were run at the end of July, when she was diagnosed with diabetes. Her kidneys were good and no thyroid problem.
