Hi Everyone,

Thanks again for all of the welcoming support yesterday :-) I do want to thank the others that posted later in the day, and I of course have a few questions, which I will ask later. But right now, I'm at work and I'm a little concerned and wanted to get some opinions.

I got an email from our Vet who said that he recommends, as does a colleague that he highly values the opinion of, to wait a month before starting insulin.... A MONTH! He wants to try the diet change first, and to stop the steroid, and do random BG tests, as well as another urine test in a week or so. I told him that I really don't want to wait that long, and I will probably test a couple of times per day... Admittedly, I have not been sitting at home this past year longing to start injections again, but now that I'm faced with the diagnosis, I don't want to wait too long either. I want to give Bubby a fighting chance at remission. how long would you wait before pushing?

Bubby was OK today, but he did not get out of bed this morning, and I don't think he ate anything until I went to check on him at lunch time. He ate some, but not a lot. His BG was 327.

Back to work... I will write more later, and visit condos as well. Oh ... and the Vet was surprised that I knew anything about Dr. Pierson's food list

Hugs,
Kathie

Re: 10/9 Bubby BG 327 - starting insulin question

What %carb food is Bubby eating now? I think if you did a food trial, a week is more than enough time. We've seen some cats show results within 2 days of changing from some dry food to all low carb wet. He's in high enough numbers I wouldn't want him to stay there. You could always start insulin to get his numbers down, then reduce as you change the food and the steroids. The longer a cat sits in higher numbers, the harder it is to achieve remission.

I agree with Wendy. I think if you remind your vet that you know how to test and that you will monitor closely as the steroids are tapered.

Thanks, Wendy and Sienne. That was my thought as well. I did tell him that I don't want to wait that long, that I really don't want Bubby to sit in those high numbers for long, and that I want to be safe but aggressive in trying to get the numbers under control. He said he wouldn't fight me on it. He asked that I send him my test results and we will go from there.

Re: 10/9 Bubby BG 327 - starting insulin question

Thanks for stopping in and saying hi to Toby and I. Saw your picture of Buddy he looks a lot like Toby. Toby is also on steroids.
Been on them for over a year . Good luck to you and Buddy, Peg and Toby

Good luck starting the insulin with Bubby. It sounds like your vet is willing to work with you on things. That is good.

I'm glad your vetty will work with you. I'm sure he's not used to having proactive beans!! Have a great night, Kathie!
