Well, I jinxed us again, because last night I typed in his SS, "I am still very, very, very pleased that the bouncing and diving that Pumbaa did on the Lantus seems to be history!" Pumbaa must have been reading over my shoulder, trying to make my life more "interesting" by, once again, going against any trend I predict. *LMAO*

While I didn't see a dive last night (he was only dropping an average of 23 points an hour when I tested him at PM +4.5), I did assume that he would drop down into the 100s later in the night. But I am such an optimist, when I was testing him this morning for his AMPS, I was chanting "Please be in the 200s". I nearly fell off my chair when I saw the 452!

But I am still counting my Levemir blessings here, because after two weeks on Levemir, Pumbaa is no longer hiding during testing/feeding/shooting times. While he did hide under the dining room table before the PM testing, he only did it half-heartedly and like a game we play. (His idea of a game, not mine. *LOL*) And right after testing, he jumped up on the counter where his food was waiting, instead of running and trying to hide from "the injection".

As I've said before, now, when I inject him with the Levemir, he simply glances up at me, like, "Are you done now? Can I eat uninterrupted now?" instead of stopping eating, looking at me accusingly, then flouncing off to deal with the sting of the Lantus. I did a test tonight, and his reaction to the injection was no different than his reaction when I started stroking him. He looked up from his food, like I was an annoyance, and then got back to chowing down. This makes me very, very happy!

Tonight was Pumbaa's 4th cycle at 1.50U. I want to find his ideal breakthrough dose, but I don't want to go too quickly and facilitate bounces. I think his nighttime numbers are more telling than his daytime numbers, but I really don't want to have to go back to napping on the sofa in 2-3 hour increments if I don't have to, yet. I think he has a later nadir at night than he does during the day. Pumbaa woke me up at 4 this morning, purring in my ear on my pillow, and demanding attention. I finally got up at 5 am, to start my day, and tried catching him for a +10PM test, but he was being his juvenile delinquent self and didn't want to be caught. That +10PM number might have told me a lot.

In any case, I am trying to not make myself crazy anymore, and just follow Pumbaa's lead in the FD dance. And realize that no matter what I do, his body controls everything. And even he can't control how his body reacts. (I keep repeating this to myself. Trust me! *LOL*)

Geeze! What is with these guys?

Well, is is the first 400 in 15 days... what is so frustrating is that, from glancing at the SS, he did better of .75u, but not great. Now, as you are raising the dose, his numbers are getting a little worse. I just don't think that .75u was a good dose. He never got below 180.

He did need 2.5u on lantus to hit consistent greens, it just caused rebound. Maybe on lev his best dose won't be quite that high and/or it won't cause rebound.

It looks like he would cycle into a few days of great numbers and then cycle out of that into high numbers for 2-3 days. I do think that when he hits the below 100 numbers (at nadir) and starts giving low PSs, you have backed off the dose too much in order to shoot that low. The trick will be in finding a safe dose to shoot on the lows, which will require cutting back less and less and being there to get the spot checks to see what happens. You may find that only a .25u to .5u dose drop is safe to shoot those low 100s - which he WILL get to again!

OH......MY....... :o

Now Pumbaa, it's time to settle down and relax. Think happy thoughts of Levemir...it is good. @-)
it is good @-) it is good @-)

Now Suze.....please teach me how to stay as calm as you do :YMSIGH:

Pumba- did you get into the droolers food before your mom woke up? WOW!

Yes, lev is more gentle to get, isn't it? Now, how about you learn Sneakers game- sprawl on the poke-stool and wait for your ears to get scratched while mommy kisses your head? Sneakers LOVES that game  .

Sheila,

I was thinking the same thing yesterday. Every time (either Lantus or Levemir) that Pumbaa starts getting a higher dose of insulin, he starts the bouncing/diving routine. What is up with that?

I was so pleased with how even his numbers were at .75U, but like you said, his numbers weren't low enough. Do you think I should have kept him on .75U longer, instead of raising him like I did? Maybe he needs longer to settle into these doses? Is 1.50U too much for him, or still too little?

I wish I knew the answer. Who has that damn crystal ball, anyway? *LOL*

Sheri:

I'm not calm. *LOL* I'm just too busy to be overly stressed about this. I really, truly hate seeing these high numbers. :(

I think he still needs a higher dose - and that he may be a cat that will "swing" on any insulin rather than stay low and flat like others do on the Ls. But I would hope that on lev he would swing less than on lantus.

Maybe at this point you can hold for 5 days. I think that if he has even higher swings, with higher lows on the next dose increase then you might want to consider dropping back to .75u. I just hate to see you lose ground.

Sheri's vet mentioned glucose toxicity as a factor in Dante's high numbers. I need to do more reading on that, but I know that it can be "broken through" eventually. Maybe that is the case with Pumbaa as well.

Heather:

I took Beck, the drooler, off of kibble a couple of months ago. And I'm very careful to not leave any crumbs of the carb variety out anywhere. So that 452 was definitely a bounce and not food-related. *sigh* Unless Pumbaa, Larry and Beck waited until I was asleep and ordered pizza. *LOL*

Check the garbage for the pizza box - and take the local pizza delivery off of speed dial!

I have two youngsters that get bread down from the counter if I am not careful. Doesn't have to be someone else's kibble - although they would tear into that if there was any around. They are torties ('nuf said) and Beau lets them do the work and helps himself to the spoils.

Believe it or not, what Pumbaa swipes is lettuce when I'm making a salad. Oh, and chicken, when I'm feeding Beck. Other than that, he leaves human food alone.

I seldom buy bread, and if I do it goes right in the fridge. It's so dry out here most of the year, you can't even leave fruit on the counter because it dries out too quickly. Even potatoes have to be stored in the fridge. That's actually a blessing now, because Pumbaa can't get into anything that would cause a huge carb-induced spike in numbers. And, fortunately, he hasn't figured out how to open the microwave like one of Mel's cats did. Hahahaha!

Sheri:

I do worry about Beck (the smart Border Collie) and Pumbaa tag-teaming it and ordering pizza while I'm sleeping, but there's nothing really exiting in the fridge for them to go after. *LOL*

Darn! It would be so easy to blame food!

Yes, I too have found fang marks in my bread... It know stays in the fridge.
