Yesterday
Yesterday he bounced pretty high based on current trends…last night at +8 he was not hungry (previous to that hunger was normal)….unusual but I didn’t worry. Today it’s +12, he’s dropped to 83 and has zero interest in food. Is just quiet in bed with me. Not eating is HIGHLY unusual for Herman. I’m worried. I assume I do not give shot while he is showing no appetite? @Bandit's Mom …tagging in case you are around.
 
Just adding that as I review stickies I understand that when a cat is in high numbers and not eating it can be dangerous NOT to give insulin (ketones etc) but I’m worried that he is green and not eating. I will keep searching and reading. Herman is not in distress but he is very quiet.
 
Sorry Amy, only just seeing this. I keep forgetting you shoot so early.

Did you shoot? Did he eat? Except for not wanting to eat, is he displaying any other signs of being unwell? Has he ever had ketones?

Could it just be that he's too full or not as hungry in lower numbers? Or food boredom and he's holding out for better food. After a taste of carbs, they sometimes turn their nose up at low carbs.

Hi Bhooma, I literally just gave the shot now after testing again with a BG of 74. 1 hour later than usual.

I spoon-fed him a little 15%gravy mixed with his usual low carb. He did not eat near as much as usual but enough that I felt ok to shoot, I don’t want those high numbers again like yesterday if I can avoid. I will try to feed again every half hour till back to normal.

He has no history of ketones and aside from low/lack of appetite since +8 last night he’s normal (a little quieter than usual). I don’t think the issue is that he is full but could be less hungry now that he’s back to low numbers, I think he likely did eat more than usual yesterday but generally speaking, if I put food in front of him, he eats. Roller coaster of a last few days so maybe that’s the issue.

hope I did right by shooting. With his late nadir I think I have a few hours to get him sorted…
 
Yes, it's good you shot. He's probably just full and their appetites do reduce with lower numbers. It takes a little getting used to.

In the SS, you want to put "83 @+12, 74 @+13" in the AMPS cell to indicate you shot an hour later. Get a +1?

Thanks, updated SS. He just ate a bit more. :D Yes I will get a +1, made myself a thermos of coffee :coffee: ….he’s still not 100% I can tell but looking brighter. I’ll crack out the feather toy soon and see if he will play a bit.

I was just going to ask about his stool. Sometimes loading up on gravy foods and/or whiplashing higher/lower BGs would trigger soft stool and an “off” day (including nausea/upset stomach/appetite being off) in my crew. Plus, what you described in those lime numbers sounded like a symptomatic hypo to me, so he could have a bit of a hypo/food “hangover” too (my term, lol).

They’re such a worry, aren’t they? Hopefully his numbers will ride steady today so you can both relax a bit. Sounds like you both need it. Sometimes they’re a bit more sensitive to insulin after a hypo, though, so I’m glad you’re monitoring.

Even though Herman doesn’t have a history of ketones, you can always test for them if it makes you feel better. I always found it reassuring even though my guys didn’t have a history either.

That makes a lot of sense. His diet was quite changed over those few days of green. I’ll keep close eye on herm today.
to add to my anxiety, I just got 3 vastly different bg’s in a row. 2.9 (52), 5.5, 4.4 (79). :oops: I’ll take the 79 as “right”. He ate a little bit, not tons, so added a little gravy for safety.
 
I hope Herman feels better soon. Max’s tummy gets upset too when I have to switch between LC and higher carb foods. He also could get nauseous and make him not want to eat. I use Ondansetron for Max mostly but sometimes Cerenia. They do cause you to worry don’t they? It would be so much easier if they could tell you what is wrong! :bighug:

Yes, the worry when they are out of sorts is so magnified when dealing with diabetes, especially when they won’t eat!. Insulin is a marvellous but scary thing!
