Good Morning LL! ~O) ~O) ~O) ~O) Thank you Elsa! The heat wave has broken and the marine layer just rolled in! :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D September and october are usually our sunniest and warmest months, but this was ridiculous! Tess just hung out in the low yellows / high blues last night, nice to see. We are done w/ the ABs too! :-D :-D There was a big barfus last night, just at dinner time. But Tess tends to go and drink a lot of water if she is hungry and waiting for dinner, then when she eats tummmy is full and oooops!

WCR All 5 Ps, Clean Plate Club, Vines to all the kittehs in need of them and hugs to all their beans.

Re: 10/6 Tess AMPS~205

Hi Ann,

I'm glad it's cooling off there, and that you and Tess are more comfortable. Not sure what a "marine layer" is but it sounds like a comfortably cool blanket. We have a sunshiny fall day, cool/cold and bright.

We could use your advice. Clare is a bouncy kitty and I'm trying to learn how to help her to calm her dives and bounces while maintaining her move toward remission, if it's in the cards.

I know ECID, but you've obviously taken your food manipulation to a highly thoughtful level, so I was wondering if you'd share what you've learned with us? Any and all advice would be much appreciated. For example, where to start to best determine the food program that would be best for Clare?

Clare's on a very low dose of insulin (0.25) and has been hovering around there for months. She was diagnosed recently with kidney insufficiency (early stage kidney disease) so we've become aware of both the carbs and the phosphorous we're feeding to her. Fortunately, she's usually a good eater. She loves chicken anything, and then likes variety with salmon, Super Supper, tuna, and beef mixed into her diet. Her favorite treat is small pieces baked chicken breast with a little olive oil. They're pretty concentrated in protein so now we're just giving her a little each day.

If you have the time to consider where we might go with her to help calm her dives/bounces, I'd very much appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks and all the best wishes to you and Tess,

Georgette and Clare

Hi Gorgette! Well, Tess is one of the bounciest kitties here and after 5 years we still haven't stopped her. :YMSIGH: The saying here is that a cat bounces until she doesn't.

One thing you might try is feeding a slightly higher carb food and upping the insulin a little. The thought is that there could be a little extra insulin available to curb the bouncing despite the higher carb food. Marje has used it pretty effectively for Gracie, it hasn't really worked for Tess though. I'd talk to Marje about it.

When Clare is bouncing I wouldn't worry about trying to feed very low carb, just her regular food. The sugar is there from the liver's reaction and you can't counteract it w/ lower carb food. One thing i do that others may disagree w/ though is use honey ( lower on the glycemic scale than karo) instead of going to a really high carb food. That can effect BG for a much longer period. For Tess at least, the honey brings her up about 20 points and then wears off in 2 hours. I don't need to hover w/ the meter quite as much.

OH, and the "marine layer" is a fog bank the hovers just off the coast here.

Hi guys,
It must be nice to see that marine layer again, even though it does cut out the sunshine. Too hot is worse than too cold!
Tess, what are your plans for today???

Hugs, scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 10/6 Tess AMPS~205 +3~221

Hi Ann,

Thanks so much for all of your ideas. There's nothing like the wisdom that comes from experience!

So today, I gave Clare a couple tsp of 8% at +0.5 and +1, and now she's surfing in the blues. I'm not sure if it's due to the food but she hasn't done this very often. It's definitely comforting to not be going from pink to green and back for a change!

I'm going to try your honey method the next time Clare goes low. I've been using HC at first, then a few drops of maple syrup on a piece of baked chicken for my "last ditch" efforts to bring her up, since she'll always eat that. I could try the chicken with honey next time as my first (and second) feedings during a low cycle, and see if it will wear off like with Tess. I can see that that would do less to feed into a bounce.

I'll also check with Marje and ask her advice.

Thanks again for your thoughts on this. It's much appreciated.

Wishing those cooling breezes your way,

Georgette and Clare

Nice sunny start for Tess. Great that your heat has broken. Finally, huh? No drama today Tess. yay for end of ABs. Have a great day Ann!

Re: 10/6 Tess AMPS~205 +3~221

Surfing yellow in order to counteract the marine layer, Tess? I know kitties prefer the sunshine - mine sure do. Me, I'd take that marine layer every day! We haven't had one make it this far inland in weeks, but when it does, it's wonderful!

Yay for being done with the AB. Hopefully Cinco will be done with his tomorrow - we'll see what the OV says. I can't say they've affected his BGs, unless they've made them wonky!

Too bad about the pukus. I think Harvey does the same thing. Then he eats too fast, on top of everything else! I should buy stock in a company that makes carpet stain cleaner!

Hope you have a lovely, cool day, Ann.
