YESTERDAY'S CONDO:
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=126454

I started one of the other new pens last night from the same person and same batch. We have the vet visit this afternoon. He didn't make the noises so far this morning. I hope my vet can tell what it is from the videos I made and that it's not what I fear it might be.

Re: 10/6 Max AMPS 186+2.5/263+6/193

Thanks, Marilyn. So this is the most awake I have seen Max in ages. He was just sitting with me and I gave him a good brushing. I know he wants to eat because before that he was by his towel with his food dish. He is a messy eater so I put a towel under his plate. Since I risk a pancreatitis attack every time I take him out, we will likely run a blood panel so it isn't ideal but will be about 6 hours since he ate and I gave him less food than usual. Maybe that is what I need to do to keep him awake, lol. He just peed of course so the chances of getting a urine sample will likely be slim since he hasn't eaten either. Of course yesterday and so far today I haven't seen any of the concerning episodes. I hope that means the likelihood of it being serious is less.

Re: 10/6 Max AMPS 186+2.5/263+6/193

Isn't it just typical that, when it's time to take them to the vet, they stop doing whatever it is that made you schedule the appointment???? Same with my kitties. I also have always had that problem with electronics - as soon as the copier repairman would show up, the copier worked just fine!

Sending lots of good vetty vines. I hope the vet can figure out what is causing the noises, and that it is treatable and not serious. :YMHUG:

Piling on more good vetty vines. I hope the videos you took are helpful. Neko is also a pro at hitting the LB just before I put her in the carrier.

Re: 10/6 Max AMPS 186+2.5/263+6/193

Thanks everyone for the vines and prayers. My vet thinks that it is bronchitis and along with it his respiration rate is faster. It will help if he loses weight. Catch 22. Max won't move. He doesn't think he is having any pain from arthritis either. As for levemir, he has used it more in dogs since they don't respond well to lantus. I didn't push it. I showed him Cobb's spreadsheets with the huge change but he didn't react much. If I really decide to try it, I think he will write me a script. He doesn't think it will change things much but wasn't adamantly opposed to it and he feels Max is doing well with his numbers. I'll get the results of the labs back tomorrow. Max does need to have his teeth cleaned but he felt I could wait if I want until February. If all the labs are good we might do it sooner. He had a final year vet student there and I know more about diabetes than she does.

Re: 10/6 Max AMPS 186+2.5/263+6/193 BACK FROM VET

Sending prayers for Max to get over the bronchitis. Did the vet give you medicine for it? I hope you get good b/w results back.

Re: 10/6 Max AMPS 186+2.5/263+6/193 BACK FROM VET

I didn't get medicine. Apparently he feels it's not a bacterial or viral thing. It just causes wheezing and likely gets worse with his excess weight. I am more determined than ever to figure out a way to help him lose weight. I ignored him today when he laid by his dish and he didn't demand food. It seems the only time he meows a lot is early in the morning. So I think I will continue to cut back on his food and see if he can lose weight. When the tests come back tomorrow we will know for sure. They were pretty darn good when I first observed the episodes the end of April so hopefully that will be the case now as well.

Have you ever given Max Slippery Elm Bark? I use it for my allergies. It helps with congestion and to thin mucus. It might help Max with his bronchitis. When I had bronchitis a few years ago, I did research on herbs and found Slippery Elm Bark was something that helped with bronchitis.

He's never had slippery elm bark but I'll look into it, Carla. Thanks.

Perhaps try Standard Process Allerplex? https://www.standardprocess.com/Products/Standard-Process/Allerplex#.VDMwEGt5mK0. You can buy it at Amazon.
Rusty has chronic congestion and Marge recommended that we try it. He was on it for a year, but now refuses to take it. I think it helped, however, and plan to reintroduce it this winter. I mixed the contents of a capsule into Stage 1 turkey baby food and served it as a "treat" once a day. It contains an herb that loosens congestion.

I hope you can get it all figured out.

Sounds like and overall productive vetty visit. I'm sorry about the bronchitis, though. I hope you're able to get him to lose a little weight so he can breath easier. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: .

Re: 10/6 Max AMPS 186+2.5/263+6/193 BACK FROM VET

Sorry to hear about the bronchitis! That is a bummer. Is he coughing, or just making the snorty sounds? Billie is about to start Allerplex for her coughing/allergy issues. I'll let you know how it goes. I hope his tests come back looking good!

Re: 10/6 Max AMPS 186+2.5/263+6/193 BACK FROM VET

Sounds like a pretty good vet visit. 'Cept for the bronchitis. Hope Max can drop a little weight. But it's a challenge; I know!

We have a special building at work exclusively for cats that need to lose weight. Carefully designed food plans for each. But some of them only "exercise" when they get up to come fetch their scheduled meals! Yesterday to get him to move, we threw a piece of kibble across the room to see if Richie would at least get up to walk over to get it. Nope. He wants to eat all the time, but only if the food is delivered!

Sounds like you got some good info today. Not surprised about the vet student.. I hope to told her about FDMB and how much info is here. It would make her a better vet!

Have you looked at the calorie content of fuds? Maybe you can find ones he'll like that are lower in cals, and that way he doesn't have to eat a lot less. Also, you might try steam to help the bronchitis. I got a humidifier, but I've also taken the cat into the bathroom, closed the door (and blocked the opening under it) and ran the shower as hot as I could until the room was good and steamy, then we sat for 30 minutes. I know we're in a drought, but I kept the water in the bathtub and used it to water my plants, so it wasn't wasted!

Sending weight loss vines.

Re: 10/6 Max AMPS 186+2.5/263+6/193 BACK FROM VET

have you seen the boxes with little cut-outs to get a cat to play more? I took a syringe box and cut small holes in 3 sides of it, just big enough for a couple of paws - maybe a 2"x3" opening. then put a bite of boiled chicken in there - punkin loved that and he'd work pretty hard to get it. While he was trying, the box would be sliding all over the kitchen floor. You might have luck with that since Max likes to eat!

At least bronchitis isn't a terrible thing - i think you were worried about something worse. i'm so glad it wasn't bad news for you.

If i were you, I'd push for the lev. Just seems like it's worth a try for Max. Nothing lost by trying it!

Re: 10/6 Max AMPS 186+2.5/263+6/193 BACK FROM VET PMPS 277

Poor Max with the stupid bronchie....

I am piling on my get well vines, too. Hopefully some of the suggestions from people will make it easier......

No advice on the weight loss....last time Skooter lost a significant amount of weight, it was due to a severe IBD episode....we are hoping that NEVER happens again.....

Feel better Max!!!

Re: 10/6 Max AMPS 186+2.5/263+6/193 BACK FROM VET PMPS 277

Thanks for the visits everyone and suggestions. Marilyn, Max is a large cat and has always been a little hefty but nothing close to this except for right before he was diagnosed with pancreatitis and had gotten to the point that he would only eat the dry version of CD which he had been of because he blocked and we nearly lost him. When he was switched at that point to only wet food he lost weight and went from nearly 16 pounds to 14 and a few ounces. Back then he never cared that much about food and let my other cat eat his food. He never would play except for glitter balls and plastic straws once in a while. His only exercise was chasing Tiffany and he took his loss very hard.

Ellas thanks for mentioning Allerplex. I'll be watching to see how it works for Billie, Deanna. I hope it works.

Tricia, my vet mentioned the spreadsheets and I showed them to the student and told her where I found them.

I forgot to mention he checked Max's BP and said it was on the higher end of normal so he doesn't think it gets low at home but I will never be convinced. I won't rest easy until the labs are in. Yes, Julie, I feared he had lung cancer because the noises my friend's cat was making sounded similar to what I was hearing with Max. Last April my vet didn't hear the wheezing but he did today. I looked at the cardiologist's report and she did mention it could be congestion or pain. I think I will probably push for the lev soon.

I was so out of it this morning I'm not sure which pen is which. I used the one that I think was the one I started last night but I'm not sure. I might end up trying the 3rd one before too much time has passed.
