Good Morning, Lantus Land Neighbors!

We're sending out healing wishes and hugs, and good appy and vet vines, to all the kitties and beans who need them today.

Yesterday's Condo

Today's News:

AMPS 306
+3 160
+4.75 116
+6.25 111
+9 191

PMPS 403
+3 457
+4 410

Clare was bouncing last night and we all got some needed rest. It's Monday, dark and cold to start. I wonder what this week will bring? Clare's AMPS is a much better lower number than yesterday's and so we're hoping for some progress. We're starting again to give her 8% at +1, to see if that will slow down her dives and bounces.

Have a great week, Everyone!

Hi Gorgette! Well, Tess is one of the bounciest kitties here and after 5 years we still haven't stopped her. :YMSIGH: The saying here is that a cat bounces until she doesn't.

One thing you might try is feeding a slightly higher carb food and upping the insulin a little. The thought is that there could be a little extra insulin available to curb the bouncing despite the higher carb food. Marje has used it pretty effectively for Gracie, it hasn't really worked for Tess though. I'd talk to Marje about it.

When Clare is bouncing I wouldn't worry about trying to feed very low carb, just her regular food. The sugar is there from the liver's reaction and you can't counteract it w/ lower carb food. One thing I do that others may disagree w/ though is use honey (lower on the glycemic scale than karo) sooner instead of going to a really high carb food. That can effect BG for a much longer period. For Tess at least, the honey brings her up about 20 points and then wears off in 2 hours. I don't need to hover w/ the meter quite as much.

Yes the mini-meals early in the cycle can slow things down. Sorry I forgot to mention that as it seems so matter of course to me now. You'll see that I don't give the mini-meals until +3 for Tess because she is on Levemir and has a very late nadir. However, if I see her dropping at shot time (that's why we always get a +10 or +11) I'll test and if the drop continues the she gets earlier mini meals. Try to stay ahead of the drop and cut it off so she won't go too low. But we do call Tess Kawabunga Kitty (KK) because she loves to surf in the 50s and even 40s. ohmygod_smile .

Hi Georgette.

Clare looks good today - nice to see her come down to the blues. Hopefully you can get her to surf there for a while.

I read your post on Ann's condo about help with feeding. I don't know if you're aware, but on Ann's SS there is a tab that lists low carb/low phos foods, taken from Dr. Lisa's list. It's a little easier to handle than Dr. Lisa's, as it's shorter. I found it very useful when I found out one of my kitties was teetering on the brink of CKD.

Have a great day!

Hi Tricia,

Yes, thanks. I forgot to mention to Ann that I was finding her LC/LP list to be a big help!

What happened with your kitty who was on the bring of CKD?

Nice blue surf today. :-D If you haven't looked at Gabby's SS yet, you should. Gabby is the LL early cycle diving queen and Sienne has her food management down to an art.

Nice slide down to blue today for Clare. Good luck with the food management.

Thanks for your visits, Wendy and Carla!

I'll look at Gabby's spreadsheet, Wendy. Thanks for the tip.

Have a good night,

Hi, Georgette.

It looks like Gabby has been communicating with Clare. (You might want to mention to Clare that following Gabby's example can make you a little crazy!)

The first thing I did with Gabby was to front load her cycle with food. Initially, I was feeding her her meals spread out at PS, +1, +2, and +3. My schedule changed and now I feed at PS, +1 and +2. There's no scientific reason for this so feel free to experiment with what seems to work best for Clare. Intuitively, it makes sense to feed early if you have a cat that's prone to those early dives. However, if you find that Clare does better if you feed half her food at PS and then divide the rest into quarters and feed at +1 and +3, then that's what may work best for Clare. The only consideration is to give yourself a week or so to see if any change in food or feeding schedule is working.

Raising the carb level may help. I've been feeding Gabby Wellness which is 4% carb.

The other strategy to to try to prevent Clare from getting a dose reduction. This means keeping on top of her numbers and feeding HC if you see those drops. The goal is to keep her in healthy numbers for as long as possible. Ideally, you're maximizing the amount of insulin so you're seeing lots of green. This lets Clare's system get used to being in those numbers.

I would suggest starting with food management. If you're still not seeing more blues and greens and the cycles aren't leveling out, we can move on to the next strategy.
