Well I shoot like you are describing..tent the skin and shoot parallel to the body, not into it...
Will have to ask Dyana bout this...I have never heard to this technique myself:
Dyana said:
I grab a few tufts of J.D.'s fur, just to get the skin away from his side, and shoot straight into his side (like you do a horse), and I just 1/2 inch needles. Do you shoot straight in?

Just noticed your post to Arnie yesterday...I have never heard of this technique. Have you always done it this way?

No, I shot in the scruff for years. Pulling up the scruff and shooting sideways in. Then J.D.'s scruff just seemed to feel like the skin was real tough (sometimes like layers of heavy saddle leather) and hard to push through sometimes, so I asked and researched about other options. Jojo said with him being a BIG cat, that I should try the 1/2 inch needles, because there is more (skin and fat) to go through for him. Like I said, now I just pull the skin away from the flesh (I pull it about an inch or so away from his side) and shoot straight in. He rarely flinches or complains. And I know I got the insulin where it's supposed to be, under the layers of skin...subcutabeous, or something like that, it's supposed to be. I don't know if it's right. It's what I do, and it seems to work. I used to have horses. What can I say?
I guess this is right. I rarely get fur shots. I'll be looking to see if anyone corrects me.

Re: 10/6 Arnie PMPS 265

Dyana your story sounds just like mine! I shot Arnie in the scruff for over 3 years. Never had a problem with it and never gave a furshot there. But then I noticed what I thought was a lump but it turned out to be just tough thickened skin from 3 years of injections in the same general area/ So the vet recommended that I change the injection site to the side or flank in front of the hind leg on the side but not in the underbelly. Well we have been having a real hard time with that and I have been giving a lot of furshots not because he moves but just because he has too much fur and neither of us are used to shooting back there. I got the razor today and shaved a small area. Hopefully I will not have that problem anymore. I use the 1/2 needles too but still don't feel comfortable or sure about shooting directly into the body. I'm not saying it is wrong, whatever works for you and your cat is best for both of you. I may try it if I still have problems. Thank You for your advice!!

J.D. has a lot of loose skin, since he used to be up to 17lbs, and now is a suelte (sp?) 15lbs. I wanted someone to shoot a video of me shooting for you. What I do; is J.D. is standing there in the kitchen, next to my legs, waiting for his breakfast, and I just bend down, grab some fur on his flanks (in front of his hind legs, on the sides, just like you describe) and I pull the fur sideways, so that the skin is peaked (like the tent on the scruff), but instead of shooting sideways, I shoot straight into the peak. I don't hit muscle because the skin is pulled away from the body.
When fur shots happen, do you shoot through the peak and out the other side? Good luck with the shaved areas. I hope it works for you.
