Hi all,

I just got home from work a little while ago, and although my husband has been keeping an eye on Corduroy, he wasn't able to post his numbers. Upon looking at them, I am surprised at how erratic they are! He started out at 390 this morning, his +2=155, +3=91, +5=140 and now, at +9, it's back up to 303! Does anyone know why his numbers are so crazy? This is all with only .05 units.

His +2 really baffles me, dropping 235 points in two hours!

It's entirely possible Brigitte...sometimes they just do that...and the big fast drop early is a set up for the bounce it looks like you're seeing now.

Corduroy sure is being difficult to figure out, but hang in there. Hopefully you'll start seeing some numbers that make better sense soon!

Yes, he is being a difficult little booger to figure out! ;-)

Also, I recently changed his food from FF Savory Salmon (due to high rates of phosphorous) to Wellness Turkey GF (just in the interim until I got a hold of some Evo Turkey & Chicken 95%). Now, I'm feeding straight Evo. I know in the past when I fed him Wellness his BG levels went up. I just thought that these dramatic swings in levels were weird, so thought I'd mention it.

On a different note, my husband said that he peed on his computer case (which was on the floor) today. He usually does this if he has a UTI, so I'm concerned about this because I know that it can be deadly for male cats, especially if there are crystals on his "pee-pee." So far, I don't see crystals. However, I'm thinking about taking him to an emergency vet to get some meds. Lastly, I've been taking his ketones with the Relion at-home test kit, and up until tonight, the strips have looked "negative." However, tonight, although it looks more on the "negative" side, I am seeing a hint of "trace." nailbite_smile Can this be due to the UTI or is it definitely a sign of ketoacidosis?

I just called the emergency vet near us and I'm taking him in tonight. I don't want him to suffer with a UTI if indeed it is one. I know how bad they can be!

Ask the vet at the ER to get a blood ketone test.

I have no idea what the Relion test is -- is it urinary ketones?

If Corduroy has a UTI, it may be why you're seeing trace ketones. Make sure you add as much water as Corduroy can tolerate to his food.

Also, ketones is not the same as DKA. A kitty can have ketones but not be experiencing DKA. Electrolyte levels need to be off for DKA to be present.

And most importantly, update us when you can.

Good for you, Brigitte. Nip it in the bud and keep him safe and feeling good.
I too find that a pee somewhere weird is an SOS, so you're a good mom to hear his cry for help!

If he does have a UTI, that might help explain the recent numbers. It would/could elevate BG numbers usually. Both from pain or from infection.

Hi everyone, sorry it took so long to reply. We got to the vet around 9:30 and didn't get home until about midnight (long wait time). Anyway, it ends up that he doesn't have a UTI! Weird. She tested for ketones (and I'm not sure what kind of test it was because I forgot to ask her to do a "blood ketone test" :YMSIGH: ) and said that he didn't even have a trace of them. So that is good. The vet said that it might be good to go ahead and give him antibiotics just to be safe and to prevent a possible upcoming UTI, but I denied it because I don't like to get too antibiotic-happy for fear of immunity to their benefits later down the road.

However, the rash that I spoke of in my earlier posts, well, that is due to FLEAS. The thought didn't cross my mind because when we took him to our vet two weeks ago, after running the comb through his fur, he said that he didn't think it was flea matter. I should add, however, that because I take him out on walks, our vet has repeatedly recommended Advantage and I didn't heed his advice. They gave him a dose of it last night, so now house-cleaning begins! Fun! Also, I have to take Joe for a dose of Advantage as well. I'm actually really glad that the rash is due to fleas to tell you the truth because I was wondering if it was some kind of allergy that we had to figure out.

Did your vet mention Capstar? Works really great to get rid of any adult fleas immediately.

Great news on the "no UTI'
