I’m at a level of CG fatigue and I think a fibro flare coming on. Vet doesn’t feel an impaction. We are getting prescriptions. She got 200mL fluids subq.

her weight is down under 5lbs so my big challenge right now is how to get food in her. syringing is going so slow.

haven’t heard back on the culture yet but I’ll call in a bit.

we are going to try to start budesonide soon and RenaPlus and keep giving nausea meds and fluid therapy.

Her teeth look okay so her side sure not to actually chew food on her own.....? Lot potassium and high BUN and other stuff probably bugging her plus the constipation.

I’ll be doing daily miralax again. Can you do pumpkin and miralax both? Or is that overkill?

Went ahead and shot roughly 0.25u, tried the Koha to see if she would actually eat, but she smelled and licked a little then stopped. Syringed maybe 20% of a 3oz can of the Koha, plus some binder.

Her UTI is E. coli resistant to a few things, the second vet where she got the culture done tried to recommend convenia on his voicemail, of course we don’t do convenia. Waiting for my vet to call me back at the end of shift to see what she has available that I could get today. She said she would meet me in town after work so I could get a new AB.


Please let this past five weeks of suffering be a lesson to everyone else, insist on a culture being done in case of possible UTI!!!!!!
Four antibiotics required trying to handle this. FOUR.
 
The suggestion to try convenia may have been due not to the ease of administration but rather because of the class of antibiotics it belongs to. The cefpodoxamine you wound up with is likewise a third-generation cephalosporin, but without the extended period of retention that is a concern with cefovecin (convenia). Human urology, at least, has been moving away from using fluoroquinolones, like the zeniquin you were previously prescribed, to treat UTIs because of the high incidence of bacterial strains that have become resistant to these drugs. (The fluoroquinolones have also racked up a number of recent FDA black box warnings.) So, the switch probably makes sense. Of course, I can't claim any real expertise in this stuff.

it’s been Veraflox, Clavamox, Zeniquin, and now this. I guess the E. coli is tough.

edit: oh and yes, the class of drug was why that vet suggested it, now that I think back to the voicemail.

I’m so tired. So burnt out and afraid I won’t be able to get her eating again. I’m so exhausted it’s hard to syringe enough into her, to do what she needs. I feel like I am failing her. And the boys too. I have four male cats plus the bunny and they hardly see me. One of the boys is 9 and having some box issues and throwing up on occasion now. His bloodwork for the visit today was fine.

I just end up in tears in the middle of the night. It’s not test feed shoot and test and put some food out any more. How did we go from her hitting me in the face at night hungry for her next meal at the beginning of the year, to this?

she has already absorbed her 200mL from the vet about 10 hours ago. She’s had maybe ... 30 kcal, maybe a little more with the syrup she had.

last BGL was 130 so at least her sugar isn’t high.
Because she’s starving. :(
 
Okay beyond the pity party above, I got another about 70mL in subq and finished syringing the first half of a 3oz can of Koha plus lots of water. That’s entirely not enough for one cycle, but it’s better than zero.

I haven’t made a mix with her supplements in a day or so. I’ll make one in the morning with the ziwi again. She did have Cerenia and Mirataz earlier in the day and her new AB so she is still getting a lot of what she needs.... it’s just so much for one person some days. I desperately hope this antibiotic and fluid therapy help her kidney levels get a little better... I think I hate kidney disease a lot more than diabetes. And kidneys don’t really heal, unlike the pancreas. Never thought I would say this, but some good old simple diabetes only would be amazing right now.

Her SS and notes are behind and I’ll get everything updated when I have had some more rest.

I wanted to thank @THH for going above and beyond in helping us coordinate meds we need and fundraise and whatnot. I get so anxious and stressed at the vet that I am often a scattered mess. She’s really helped us through this.

My paternal grandfather died of kidney disease when I was an infant. My mother spent her teens with him on dialysis. I have an old friend I tried to ask about what it felt like with her kidney disease (she finally got a transplant a couple years ago again). All she said was she wouldn’t wish it on her worst enemy. :(
