This morning I tried my first attempt at collecting some pee from Simon to bring to the vet since they were unsuccessful in getting any urine out of him. I was very excited because Simon got in the box and I positioned the cup behind his butt. I don't know what happened, but his pee must have been sideways because it totally missed the cup (and it was a pretty big cup!). Darn it!! Now I'll have to try again tonight. I might have to try Roni's technique and get out the big soup ladle! :-D The vet called me today and said that Simon's bw shows that he has high amylase and that it could indicate panreatitis or kidney issues. I would like to wait until I get the urinalysis back before I start freaking out. Tihs vet is not Simon's normal vet and I am just not that comfortable with her and some of the things she says. Simon has had higher amylase before and it did not indicate pancreatitis and his kidney levels were fine so I am hoping this is the same. Has anyone else had any experience with high amylase?

I asked them to fax Simons bw results yesterday, but did they do it? No!! I'm going to have to call again today.

Anyway, Simon is great and eating well. He actually gained .2 pounds so now he weighs a big 16.2 pounds! At his heaviest, he was 19.

Hi Georgia, that's too bad they couldn't get a pee sample at the visit. That happened once with Maggie. Good luck with the pee sampl tonight. I know you miss your regular Vet. It sounds like you don't feel it could be pancreatitis with Simon feeling good. Sending some vines that all is okay. Will catch up later. Hugs.

Amylase levels are unreliable in cats. It's a pancreatic enzyme but an elevated level is pretty well meaningless. It used to be that amylase and lipase levels were used to diagnose pancreatitis. However, those elevations are more reliable in dogs and irrelevant with cats.

Mannie has had a elevated amalyse level before too, and I have been told, as Sienne mentioned, that it isn't all the significant, kinda of irrelevant. He's always been fine, so we didn't worry about it. No issues on Mannie's end.

sorry too on the urine collecting. That is so Mannie. They never can get anything out of him when he goes to the vetty too, a real problem for us. He will either take care of business en-route, or they aren't fast enough when he is there that he'll pee on their floor :roll: .... I wish you luck!

can relate too on the faxing.... always have to make a second call....

It sounds like you can stop worrying! Have a great day and keep bugging the vet office until they fax you the results of the tests.

What would we do without the knowledge and experience in LantusLand? Good to know the amylase is nothing to worry about. Why do they do the test? Good luck with the pee sample. At least Simon stayed in the box while you were there.

Here we go again with the low numbers at lunch. I am so glad I was able to get away. Makes me wonder what he was yesterday at lunch since I couldn't come home.

Ann, Yes it is a pain that I have to do the urine collection on my own. Hope Simon cooperates. And I really do miss Simon's vet.

Sienne, thank you so much for your valuable information on amylase. Simon's regular vet never made a huge deal out of it so I was wondering why this vet seemed so concerned when we don't have the urine results yet. She is new to the feline only practice and from what I hear her saying to me, it sounds like she knows more about dogs.

Michelle, it is comforting to know that Mannie also had the higher amylase and the vet wasn't concerned. And too funny on Mannie never cooperating with the urine sample. Peeing on the way there and on the floor is just too hilarious.

I am going to feed mc food and an extra amount of food before I leave to go back to work.

Lots of new info to learn here today.
Haven't dealt with that so far.

Perhaps if you got some gravel like they put in aquariums for the litter box instead of litter.
Then you can get a sample when he used the box without trying to catch in action.
Easier to create a puddle in the corner and collect a sample.

I'm lucky in that Shadow will pee on plastic when I cover up the litter box. She isn't picky about her box or what's in it.
Now we have a litter box that has a reservoir underneath so I can have a sample anytime I need one.

Rhiannon, thanks for the idea about the gravel. The vet gave me some sand but it will only cover maybe 2 inches of his entire box. I don't think he will go without much sand. We do have gravel for our fish tank so maybe I'll try it tonight.

Yes, always such great info on FDMB! I have learned amazing things!
