Please see end of previous post to look at recent lab results. Not sure if he has CKD. Vet has said there are kidney issues. I am interested in any thoughts. We changed the food to wet low carb as soon as he was diagnosed with diabetes. It helped soo much. But now the vet has said the kidneys may have a problem with proteins. What is a girl to do ?

Currently looking for food with lower phosphorous. Is there anything else ?

He is 25 days off insulin. :cat::)

If you look at the website Elise linked, you will find that in early stages of CKD, what is important is good quality protein. You only worry about amount of protein in later stages of CKD. Here us a link to CKD food lists, one of which is for CKD and diabetes. Over half of the entries are available in Canada, though you might have to independent pet food stores to find some of them. The Tiki and Weruva are widely available.

One more thing, I see that you didn't get the OTJ trial instructions, so I'm adding the part about what to do longer term. Good luck and congratulations!

Once he/she is through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Your cat is still diabetic but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low carb food in the manner successful for your kitty. If you decide to change his/her feeding schedule, let your meter be your guide to the best times to feed. Avoid medications with sugar in them and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood glucose weekly for the first month and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him/her monthly. Weight should remain stable. If he/she seems "off" or sick, or is showing signs of diabetes (excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss), test his/her blood glucose right away. Keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission. If you see rising blood glucose numbers, it's time for a visit to the vet!
