An all around better start today...a lower AMPS and we still have electricity!

Today is Trixie's "Gotcha Day" - the anniversary of the first day she came to live with us! She showed up on our back porch in early October, 2004. In a nutshell, she had been abandoned by our former (insert every expletive imagineable) next door neighbors. Without even getting close to her, we could tell she needed help ASAP; we could see her skeleton through her fur! However, she was too scared to let us near her. We started leaving food out, and she came by every evening to chow down, but she still couldn't trust us. It was starting to get cold out, and we were worried about her, so we had to step up the pace...we had to use a Hav-A-Heart trap to get her. She was so light that she could walk into the trap and not trip it! Hubby finally got the trap set so delicately that we were able to snag her.

Because she was so underweight, she spent a few weeks in the hospital before coming home to us. With 5 cats already, we were at capacity. However, our rescue group was at capacity, too. So, we agreed to foster her until she found a home. Because of her health at the time, and because she had yet to be spayed (which couldn't happen until she gained weight and better health), fostering wasn't a short-term commitment. So, well, the rest is history! There was no way we could giver her up, nor did we want to put her through any further trauma by uprooting her.

It's hard to believe it's been 7 years. She's been a true blessing in our household.

Here are a few pics...

Happy Gotcha Day Trixie! You are one lucky girl to have found Amy. Your neighbors are dispicable for doing that to her.
I'm glad you got her cat_pet_icon Thanks for the story. Give her some extra skritches from us, today.

Re: 10/31 Trixie AMPS 180 Happy Gotcha Day!

Oh my, Happy, Happy Anniversary to your sweet Trixie. I got emotional reading her story. What a lucky kitty to have you and DH rescue her and get her the medical help she needed. She is beautiful; I love her colors and black tail. Do you find that the ones you rescue seem to be ever so grateful to have a home and continually thank you? I find that with Maggie, not that all cats aren't grateful to have a home, but there's something special when you finally gain their trust. Have a wonderful day.

Re: 10/31 Trixie AMPS 180 +2 165 Happy Gotcha Day!

Thanks, guys! We're as lucky that she found us as she is! I have many words about those neighbors...to put it politely, they were horrible, horrible excuses for human beings. I barely knew them, barely spoke to them, yet I still have pages worth of stories. Fortunately, they were renters as opposed to owners, so they weren't around for long. However, my heart breaks whenever I think of any animal that lands in their home. And yes, Trixie was "replaced" after they abandoned her. Disgusting.

Trixie had escaped their house shortly after they moved in. When we introduced ourselves, they had told us they had a cat who got out, but literally said "That's OK. She was a pain in the ass anyway. Not much of a family cat." I guess they wanted a cat who would do what they wanted her to do, when they wanted her to do it. And, we know they used to hit her if she got on the counters, because she ducks if we go to scratch her head when she's on the counter. So, they made no effor to find her once she got out.

In our house, she's allowed to be who she is, and in doing that, it turns out she's a velcro cat who follows me into whatever room I'm in.

Now, as for today's numbers...hmmmmm...Since yesterday was a wacky day with the power outage and Fancy Feast for breakfast, I'm not going to question today's data too terribly much....

Re: 10/31 Trixie AMPS 180 +2 165 Happy Gotcha Day!

Part of me wants to ask you the names of those people, so I can report them to the local animal people or PETA or someone who will give them what they deserve...

But the other part of me wants to wildly celebrate GOTCHA DAY! You are angels, yes you are. Trixie is a lucky girl. Makes my heart happy.

P.S. Kitty has had 3 Adequan shots, in the scruff, and he played this morning! We are hopeful.

Re: 10/31 Trixie AMPS 180 +2 165 Happy Gotcha Day!

aw, i love your story! well, not the part about the scummy neighbors treating her badly, but the happy ending! and look at that middle picture - she's SMILING! trixie knew she had a good thing!

so funny how things work out, amy. i'm just thinking about how trixie turned out to be diabetic, and you KNOW that the former neighbors wouldn't have done the testing/shooting thing.

i was telling our new vet about how i couldn't get over punkin spending months in a cage at the humane society before we got him. he was so sweet, not to mention beautiful, i would've thought someone would've adopted him sooner. and she said maybe others couldn't have handled his diabetes. I said "but he wasn't diabetic then" and she said something about how the world works things out the way they are meant to be - as in, we got him because we were people who would take care of his medical needs when they happened. sure got me thinking.

and i'm thinking the same thing about trixie and you . . . what a good thing it was that the scummy neighbors didn't keep her, because she would surely not even be alive now. she got the fairy tale end to her story!

Re: 10/31 Trixie PMPS 240 +2 135 Happy Gotcha Day!

Thank you, everyone, for sharing in Trixie's day!

Ann, I agree that cats are truly grateful. I see it in both Trixie and civvie Frankie in particular. Frankie escaped death several times within the first month of her life, and now she just loves to live - she's a very happy-go-lucky girl! Trixie is always with us, and if we're not around, she's always with another cat. She knows she found a good thing here!

Julie, I know exactly what you mean. There's no way Trix would be alive today if she was still with the old neighbors. I know this for a fact. I always believe there is a reason for everything, even if we don't know that reason at the exact moment. There are no accidents in life.

I also tend to feel a connection between her and my very first kitty, and only GA, Mr Kitty. They have very similar personalities. Ironically, he passed away due to complications related to pancreatitis. At the time, I knew nothing about pancreatitis and it's connection to diabetes and DKA. I kept asking all the vets and techs why he was hanging out IN the water bowl, and they just kept saying "sometimes they do that when they're sick." I don't understand how none of them even mentioned the possibilty of diabetes. In hindsight, I'm positive he went DKA...and we never knew it. I think he sent Trixie to us, so we could keep the same thing from happening to her...

Kathy, I'm so glad to hear the adequan already seems to be helping Kitty! It really has turned back the clock for my Mario...he's just so bright-eyed and spunky again!

"Trixie Treat"...she's got a bazillion nicknames - and now she's got a bazillion and one!

Bean is headed off to the Land of Nod, while Trix is off at the par-tay! I hope all the kitties have a wonderful time...

We're late for Trixie's very special day but congratulations and it was the luckiest day of her life when you got her!!!! How smart to set the trap so lightly. She had a sad beginning but you have given her the most incredible love in the last 7 years.

I hope you all enjoyed every single moment of this very special day!!!

What a beautidul story!! You & Trixie are both Blessed to have each other--People are cruel especially some to animals--That's why God make animal Lovers!!! Hugs & Love from us!
