Have any of you seen higher BG numbers w/using Flovent for asthma? Any of you w/asthmatic/diabetic kitties been able to get off the juice while still on the Flovent?

I know Flovent isn't suppose to be systemic like oral meds....but.......had decreased Curry's Flovent from 440 bid to 330 (220 in am and 110 in pm) for about 3 weeks....She then dramatically decreased her need for insulin.....1.0unit to 0.3 units.....I do have to add that I moved during this time....and life was stressful for Curry....then had to increase again as she started coughing.....and had to also increase her insulin.......back to 1.0 unit

I did read that it can possibly increase BG in humans.....Of course so little testing/research is done on cats......Just curious about the answers to my questions above.....

Appreciate the feedback.

I don't have an answer to your question. Of course a tiny bit of it does become systemic - it is just not a lot. Oscar is on 3 puffs 250 flixotide (flovent) twice a day because that is the only dose that controls his symptoms. He has a lot of lung damage from years of untreated asthma. In my eyes, breathing trumps diabetes. So I'll give what ever flovent dose is necessary and adjust the insulin as needed. Flovent is TONS better than the other steroid options out there. Any non steroid treatments don't treat the cause and you still have the chance of an asthma attack.

Zoe was OTJ before being diagnosed with asthma. She has been getting Flovent for the last year, and I have seen no increases in her BG.....until recently. For the last 8 weeks she has been getting 2 puffs of Flovent 250 twice a day...she had had a few symptoms, coughing and congestion so I increased her dose to the 2 puffs of 250 BID - prior dose was 330 BID. Her BG have gone up in the last month.....I do random spot checks. However she was dignosed with a UTI 2 weeks ago, so that could be causing the higher than normal BGs. Her normals are 70-90 and recently have been as high as 155 and as low as 79.

Just to add to the confusion!!

Sherry and Kelly....Thanks for the feedback.

The asthma is so much easier to treat....It is progressive vs diabetes has the potential of remission.....My vet sd when she was then dx w/the asthma...."And you thought she was high maintence before the diabetes".........I took as an acknowledgement of how time consuming dealing with the diabetes was in comparison to the asthma.
