Happy Halloween Ya'll! I'm feeling pretty 'scary' at the moment. A little lower this morning after the R last night, that's the norm for him it seems.

Here's the latest, vet says start with either amoxi liquid or clavamox pills. Normally vets have their own 'pharmacy' on site, so does she have sugar free amoxi? If not, can I have it compounded elsewhere? Usually it's a powder mixed in water, so the sugar is already in it unless it's SF. Or are the clavamox pills crushable, so I can mix it with the tiniest bit of tuna to get him to eat it? I've used amoxi over the years, animals hate it, even my dogs and I end up with pink stuff all over the house from the shaking heads. He was on it once, many years ago, for a 'sore throat'. What a mess that was! I'm lucky it worked, I got more ON him than IN him, he fought me tooth and nail, literally. If the clavamox is crushable, I think that's the better option, after really thinking about it. Particularly if she can prescribe it in a larger pill that requires 1/2 or 1/4 a pill each time, would be easier to hide the crushed meds in a tsp of tuna, which he loves. If not, a whole pill crushed in tuna would still be easier to get down him, I'm sure.

I have come to the conclusion that even though I was really angry with the vet after his DX, she has been nothing but cooperative since then and I feel bad about it. I think we can have a good relationship for Lucian's care. I was so pissed about the lack of info, etc, I was steamin'! But I've come to the conclusion that 99% of owners don't want the responsibility of doing what WE do, no wonder she never mentioned it. She treated it like anything else. "Here's your cat, give him insulin. Bye" Once she found out what I was doing and saw his SS, she has been fantastic and continues to surprise me, both with the script for Lev and now, giving an antibiotic without an exam in hopes of saving me money. Of course, she says, if he doesn't show improvement in a few days, she wants to see him, I agree, but said making payments is not a problem. Another surprise.

So, I'm going for the pills. Thoughts?

Re: 10/31 Lucian AMPS 306

Go for the pills as they are crushable and tasteless. Amoxicillian has sugar in the powder and shot one of my civies into the 200s really bad for sugarcats.

Well I am glad that she is willing to work with you over the phone and accept payments if you have to take him in . That's a relief. I hope the Clavamox works. I had to give the liquid to Nuzzles. She took it like a dream.

Hoping Lucian feels better soon.

Re: 10/31 Lucian AMPS 306

Nuzzles had been thru so much, I think she was more cooperative. I've probably had to give amoxi to maybe a dozen animals over the years and could never get them to take it willingly. Pink spots everywhere!

Yeah, I'm going for the pills. Called the office, I'll pick them up there when they call me that it's ready. I asked about a sugar free version, nope, they don't have it. But since I decided on the pills, I didn't call the pharmacy to find out about compounding it sugar free. I know the stuff is sweet, they give it to babies and it tastes like bubble gum. You would think, with the high rate of human diabetes in this country, they would stop making anything with a high sugar content. I guess with the weight to meds ratio it isn't a big deal with human babies, but with a 10lb cat, it is.

Have to go to the store while I'm out later and I feel like KA-KA today. If not for having to get his meds, I wouldn't go anywhere today. :YMSIGH:

112? Where's he going? I just paid $28 and change for antibiotics! He better need them! :o

Re: 10/31 Lucian AMPS 306,+8.5/112

Maybe he just needed the threat of a trip to the vet to straighten up and fly right. lol

But that blue sure looks more like Lucian on Lev. How's the poop issue? Maybe it was just a bad batch of food?

Re: 10/31 Lucian AMPS 306,+8.5/112

The poo issue could have been food, but the crazy numbers in the last week shouldn't be.

I hate to say it, but he may be in pain. I'm sure he has some arthritis in his hips/back legs, whatever. It may be bothering him. Today is the warmest it's been in a couple weeks. He got nasty with Meow Meow when I put him on the bed earlier, so I grabbed him and moved him to his pillow and just pushed a little on his hip to make him lay down and he meowed at me in a way that made me think it might have hurt him. Anything that I could give him for it would either thin his blood or tear up his tummy or both. I don't think Vicodin is appropriate.

I hate to think I may have to use the dang heat. I don't need it and it tears up my sinuses. Without the heat, it never drops below 62 in here, no matter the temp outside, but that may be too low for him.

I was so shocked by the price of the meds, I forgot to ask them about Fortiflora. Guess I'll check Amazon, I know he needs it on the antibiotics. The girl at the desk doesn't seem to think he'll eat them crushed in tuna, says they are bitter. Clavamox is just for veterinary right? no human equivalent? I guess it's just another penicillin derivative. Pen VK would probably do the same thing at half or less, of the price. I guess we'll find out in a little while if he'll eat it. :YMSIGH: Trust me, at this price, I WILL get them into him somehow.

Nope its the same as humans take the pill form is basically unsweetened Amoxicillian. I don't know if you know this or not but most farm supply stores sell liquid penicillian which is injectable.

I'm considering taking him back to .75, with the dropping he's done all day. Was trying to shoot early because of time change.

Whatcha think?

That's what I thought, already did it. Had no problem getting him to eat the pill crushed in tuna. :thumbup
