10/3 - Lantus - Flash - Test Number - 277

Normal blood glucose for cats is 50-120

277 isn't an awful number but it's still higher than we want it to be but without any other test numbers, it's impossible to give you anything in the way of useful advice.

If he started out at AMPS at 585 and was at 277 at +3, that's one thing but if the AMPS was 92 and the +3 was 277, our advice would be almost the exact opposite.

We need to see tests done before every shot and then tests somewhere in between the shots on both the AM and PM cycle

ok, i will see if i can get a test prior to his 7PM shot but I'm assuming it will read fairly high like yesterday, if it reads at all...600 is the max my meter will display.

Is there any way to get some more tests during the middle of the cycle? Pre shot tests are typically higher than the rest of the day...2+ or 4+ might tell you more about how much the insulin is doing for Flash.

After 2.5 hrs of insulin, his number is 289. Does this mean he's either not accepting the insulin very well or the dose is too low for him? Would more tests confirm this? I just don't see how his number will go any lower if I test him + 4, +6, etc, it will just get higher as the insulin effect wears off, right?

I see, so tests 2 and 4 hrs after insulin are more useful, got it.

Not exactly....You need to test before every shot (the AMPS and PMPS)…...then test sometime around +2 to +4 to see how much he's dropped....and then test again around +5 to +7 (the nadir when using Lantus is usually around +6)

By testing several times during the cycle, you'll see how well he's responding to treatment.

It's just too soon to say and you don't have enough tests yet. Again, the nadir on Lantus is usually around +6 so he could continue to drop for awhile.....but yes, after nadir, when the insulin is starting to wear off, the numbers will generally start to rise again....until the next shot time and the whole thing starts over.

Unfortunately, you can never assume what the number will be... the only way to see progression and if a dose works or not, is by gathering this data (pre-shots and mid-cycle) every day. Otherwise you shoot blind which is very dangerous.

I am definitely seeing more benefit in testing after insulin than before, will try to do more extensive testing tomorrow, AND w/o his dry food which I can see makes this really difficult since it's basically carbs and sugar.
