10/28 Jupiter - any suggestions on increasing fluid intake?

As most of you probably already know, Jupiter was at the vet on saturday with constipation. He was vomiting too. He had 3 enemas done. He was not feeling well after either and was leaking poo for a while.

His chemo was originally scheduled for wednesday this week but due to him not feeling well, the oncologist agreed it was best to wait a few more days. So we rescheduled his 2nd chemo treatment for next monday. Bloodwork will be on friday this week.



Tonights update (for those of you that didnt already read this on facebook):

"Jupiter seems to be feeling a little bit better tonight. He did eat a little today but still not enough.

I think now its time to really start trying to increase his fluid intake. Will need to increase his fluid intake and start giving him miralax daily."



Any suggestions for increasing his fluid intake would be greatly appreciated .....and continued thoughts,prayers, & vines for him to feel all better and for a good appy again would be appreciated as well.

Vet said it was very important to increase his water consumption and start him on miralax too. Im going to mix a little water in his food....if I mix in too much he wont eat it though.....she said it would be a good idea to mix in as much as possible that he will still eat it
she gave us a paper with some ideas for increasing water consumption:
1. add some water to food
2. try broth, tuna water, or clam juice (try to avoid excess salt
3. ice cubes of meat or fish broth to flavor the water bowl
4. running water. (ex: drip faucet into bowl or pet fountains)
5. provide multiple sources (ex: water bowls in different multiple locations through out the house)

Thanks for the update on Jupe - I'm happy to hear he is somewhat better tonight. Good idea to wait until he's a bit stronger for chemo.

I've had to increase the amount of liquids in my civie Theo, due to his cystitis. He just doesn't drink much on his own, water fountains were a bust. I bought one from Petsmart to try, they refunded my money after a month when I returned it. Multiple water bowls don't help. What has finally worked for me was adding enough warm water to his food. I add a couple tablespoons to each meal. He gets mini meals along with Neko. Once or twice I've had to add some freeze dried chicken dust to the top to get him started. I try to make sure there is still some of the chunky meat there (he eats raw), in addition to the "gravy". Good luck - I think it's ECID on what works for each cat.

Hi Jamie.

I pretty much do all of those things for Izzy. I boil chicken breast and make my own broth and use the chicken breast to mix in the miralax normally (thought lately I am syringe feeding it to her). I have a fountain, and and other bowl nearby, I add lost of water to her wet food and I give sub Q fluids.

I also think chicken broth is a good idea. Here's a recipe I have used from The Whole Cat:



2 to 3 lbs. chicken (I prefer thighs)
1 lb. chicken necks and backs
water to cover
1/4 cup tomato juice (not V8 juice)
Put all chicken into a soup pot large enough so the chicken fills the pot only halfway. Cover with water until water is one to two inches above the chicken. Cover the pot loosely (tip the lid). Bring to a low simmer. Simmer three to five hours, occasionally breaking up the chicken and adding more water if necessary. During the last hour remove the lid and let the water cook down until the chicken is barely covered. Broth is now deliciously strong. Pour off broth, cool to room temperature, and then store in refrigerator.
While the broth is cooling, pour enough cold water over the chicken left in the pot to cover. then let it cool some more until it's cool enough for you to be able to touch. With your hands, knead, squeeze, and stir the chicken around in the water to get all the good out of the meat and into the water. The water will begin to look milky. Finally, take the handfuls of chicken meat, wring out the liquid into the pot, and throw the meat away. (The hours of simmering have succeeded in transferring the usable nutrition from the meat into the broth. What little nutrition is left in the meat at this point would be largely indigestible.) Leave the bones and the broth behind in the pot.

Pour this broth off and store it with the first batch of broth. Transfer the bones into a smaller pot. Crack them up so they form a
fairly compact mass in the bottom of the pan. Cover the bones with water and add the one fourth cup tomato juice. Simmer one half to one hour.

Pour off this broth, again combining it with the other broth. Throw the bones away. Store about two cups ot the broth in a jar in the refrigerator, store the rest in the freezer in pint size covered freezer containers to be thawed as needed. To thaw, stand the container in a bowl of hot water.

Hmph! Lost my post. Any way continued vines for Jupe. Does he like milk? There is CatSip made for cats,I found out it is made by the company that makes Lactaid milk for humans. The only difference is added taurine. Lactaid is much cheaper and available in most grocery stores.

Jamie, the 'water', in canned tuna, is actually vegetable broth, which may contain onion.

Checkers loved home cooked, chicken broth, altho I didn't know Marje's recipe, which sounds much more nutritious, than just simmering, as I did.
