I'm home to do a curve today and watch that he doesn't eat too soon before his meals. I was a bit surprised by the high amps. I gave him three cubes of chicken breast at 1:30 a.m. which was +8. Maybe that was too late in the cycle for Chester. It was supposed to be at +7 but I slept through the alarm.

Chester's playful and bright eyed today.

My dog gets a curve today...good thing because he was quite unexpectedly high this morning as well.

Re: 10/28 Chester's AMPS 379

Sounds like you'll be busy this Thursday. Hope all goes well and the curves give you some answers. Tray is up on the pink floor keeping Chester company, hope they come down soon.

Re: 10/28 Chester's AMPS 379

Oh chester .. come on down off that pink floor ... now that you are having a curve done today, you want to show your bean what you can do! Have a great day guys!

Re: 10/28 Chester's AMPS 379, +6=188

Well, he's off the pink, but just barely. He hasn't had any snacks yet today, either. We seem to be all colors of the rainbow today so far (except red and green...hoping for one, cursing the other!) Good thing black isn't one of the rainbow colors!

Re: 10/28 Chester's +10=201, PMPS 203

We've had a pretty uneventful day (thank goodness). Odd that his +10 was 201 and the pmps was only 203. I'll be keeping an eye on him tonight, though. Not doing a full 24 hour curve, but darn close to it. He didn't snack much today, and nothing after +6.

Re: 10/28 Chester's +2=316,+4=347 FLUMMOXED

I have NO clue what's going on here. He didn't get into any kibble tonight, I'm sure of that, so I have nothing to blame.

I'm starting to really despair of using either Levemir or Lantus. I've tried PZI and he dropped like a hot potato, but he was only on it for a VERY short time before we switched to Lantus.

Almost looks as if it could have been a fur shot, but I don't have any real reason to think that except the numbers. He was very still when I shot, I took my time, made sure I was in...so I'm really just looking for excuses.

And I don't even know how to spell "flummoxed."

Re: 10/28 Chester's +2=316,+4=347 FLUMMOXED

The pinks may be a result of Chester bouncing off of the blue. It seems like he's doing that pretty consistently.

Re: 10/28 Chester's +2=316,+4=347 FLUMMOXED

Goshhhhh.... Even if the blue was all on the high side of blue? This is SO very frustrating! I've had Chester almost at my side all day and I've not seen him poop, so I'm taking a stab that he's got a bit of constipation going on. Dosed him with between 1/8 and 1/4 tsp of Miralax.

I'm terrified to test him in the morning! Or to even give him a snack tonight.

Re: 10/28 Chester's +2=316,+4=347 FLUMMOXED

Sienne's comment about the bounce seems right on -- frustrating as that is.

I would doubt that withholding a snack would help, though. Diabetic cats do well with several small (low carb  ) meals -- just not within two hours of AMPS. Maybe someone else will come along with an opinion.

Re: 10/28 Chester's +2=316,+4=347 FLUMMOXED

I'll give him a small, very moist snack (to help the Miralax along).

I still don't understand about the bounce here, though. He didn't drop fast or far, and he's had numbers like those many times before. Usually when there's a pink after greens or blues it's because I've fed (or even overfed) HC. This time he got nothing out of the ordinary and nothing after +6.

Tomorrow I'm going to have to go out and buy another bottle of hair dye because this kitty is making me old before my time!

Re: 10/28 Chester's +4=347 FLUMMOXED & NEW Question

TWO questions, actually...

I just noticed that the Merrick Surf and Turf that Chester had for dinner does NOT say "low glycemic" on it like the others from Merrick that we've used. Could that be the problem? Did I high carb my kitty?

And.....

I read somewhere that Halloween was a good date to start adjusting for the upcoming time change. I can always remember Spring Ahead and Fall Back, which means that 5:30 a.m. (Chester's shot time) will be 4:30 a.m.

However, I'm always confused by which direction to go with my adjustments. Am I right in thinking that I should go @ 15 minutes EARLIER each day to acclimate him to the time change?

Re: 10/28 Chester's +4=347 FLUMMOXED & NEW Question

Sienne is so experienced with bounces -- Gabby is the Queen of the Bounce! I haven't been reading all your condos, and I'm not the best at reading spreadsheets, but looking at Chester's, I'd say bounce too. Maybe his pancreas is trying to kick in (a GOOD thing!). Maybe the recent dose changes are confusing him.

We always used to feed a snack at +2 -- because early snacks rule! What's your feeding schedule?

These early weeks are so difficult, I know.

Re: 10/28 Chester's +4=347 FLUMMOXED & NEW Question

I don't know...the differences in his dose in the past several days has been only one drop of insulin and even then I'm not secure that I'm at all accurate at that small of a dose. And although my spreadsheet is new, Chester's been at this Lantus/Levemir thing since June and diabetes in general since last February...hence my frustration.

He just had his snack and I'm calling it a night...might be the only night's sleep I get, one never knows with this Diabetes Dance.

Re: 10/28 Chester's +4=347 FLUMMOXED & NEW Question

I'll be posting instructions re. adjusting for the end of daylight savings time shortly. (Maybe even tonight if I get around to it!!)

A bounce can occur off of any number, relatively speaking. It's simply a matter of the liver thinking the lower than what it's used to BG levels are "dangerous." It's like the set point for what constitutes very low numbers has migrated up due to the diabetes and the liver interprets blues, or even in some cases, yellows as dangerous.

According to Janet & Binky's, the Surf 'n Turf is 3% carb. Don't overestimate the effect of food. We like using HC gravy/canned food because it's in and out of the system quickly. The effects won't last much more than an hour or so. Dry food will effect numbers for hours (and hours and hours and hours....)
