Bailey sees fine this morning - acting normally. eating normally. But again he looks thinner to me. And again I weighed him and the scale says no change. And again my DH says I am imagining things. How can he appear to be losing weight but not actually losing weight?? I don't get it. His hip and leg bones look more prominent every day. Cant wait till the vet on Wednesday but at the same time I am scared. Maybe its losing Bonnie so recently, but I have a bad feeling...

I know you must be worried, but hopefully the vet will be able to ease your fears. Are you using a baby scale or holding him while weighing yourself? (Home scales are horribly inaccurate)

I have to think that you're just overly concerned though because if he was sick enough to be losing weight daily, I'd think he wouldn't be "acting and eating normally"

When you're at the vet, you might ask them if you can use their scale occasionally without a regular vet visit, just to keep track of his weight in an "official" way

I am using home scales but you think there would be more variance if they were inaccurate... Good idea about the vet scales though.

The vet will weigh him but the vet hasn't seen him for a while - he was diagnosed EPI in July and the vet weighed him then but we had another couple of weeks after that of diarrhea and not eating until we got the enzyme amount correct, and he lost weight during that. So he will be lighter than the vets.

Lets hope I am just paranoid, he is behaving totally normally. I even checked his eyes for jaundice in case of fatty liver.

I just weighed him on my food scales - he's a small cat and very compliant with me trying to get all four feet on the small square. ;) should have taken a photo as it was very cute. . anyway Exactly the same weight as my own human scales. 6.2lbs...

Oh shoot!! If you do that again, we just have to have a picture :-D I bet it WAS cute!!

Well at least now you have a starting point. Next time you're "sure" he's lost more weight, you can check

I used to work for several vets (years ago) and we had a couple of clients that were being worked with to lose weight. They were told they could just pop in and use the scale anytime, they didn't need to make an appointment or see the vet each time. That'd be the best thing and could also keep an "official" weight on his chart

Could he be losing muscle bulk instead? DH's potassium disorder causes him to lose/gain/lose muscle 'bulk' but that doesn't necessarily translate to a great weight loss. There's a noticable difference in DH's appearance - could he have low potassium?

Yep thats kinda how it looks - muscle wasting. But it struck me as strange that he could lose that much muscle and not change weight at the same time- even if its cancer or fluid buildup - you think it would be unlikely to replace weight loss at exactly the same rate.

The muscle wasting is why i thought fatty liver. (If the enzymes arent working well enough - or he isn't getting enough perhaps fatty liver could develop as its the equivalent of not eating enough. )

But I guess if its CRF then potassium deficiency could develop too..

But he has no other symptoms.... no lethargy or jaundice or vomiting or constipation or diarrhea. His appetite is fine. No weakness. (which you would assume from muscle wasting) . Really the only symptoms are - apparent muscle wasting (which my DH says is in my head), possibly drinking and peeing too much (which could be due to frequent BG over renal threshold)

Counting down to vets on Wednesday.

Hey, Wendy -

I hope it turns out to be nothing and the vet sets your mind at ease. How sweet about being so compliant on the scale - would definite like to see that picture!

Hugs -

Libby (& Hershey, too!)
