Angel has been OTJ since mid-July. I started giving her insulin again a few days ago, when she tested all night and the next morning between 136 and 144 - but now she's dropping this much on 0.1u so obviously I'm going to either drop her dose down to 0.05u or just see how she does if I stop.

The whole time she's been OTJ (except a few hours one day when she much have mainlined some karo) she has tested in the 70's.
Maybe I should never have even started giving her insulin again. I don't know...
My instincts tell me to shoot anything above 110 and nip in the bud any lazy ideas her pancreas might be having.
Buuuut..... if anyone thinks my instincts might be a little shoot first ask questions later... I can be reasoned with. :)

Thoughts? Should I drop the dose and give a little more help or am I "helping" unnecessarily?

I'm a little embarrassed to say that I waited for Donovan to creep up to higher blues and low yellows and stay there before taking major action. He had usually brought himself back down, but when he didn't, I searched for an underlying cause, which turned out to be bad teeth. He's now consistently green except for the random kibble incidents that spike him to blue. What I'm saying (and not necessarily recommending especially for those whose sugarcats have additional health issues) is that just as one high number doesn't warrant an immediate dose increase, a few slightly unacceptable BGs on an OTJ cat doesn't make me want to shoot right away. It does, however, make me increase the frequency of BG spot checks until things (hopefully) go back to normal. Donny gets poked twice a week now. If he throws me an inexplicably higher number, I'll re-check him sooner.

i heard through the grapevine angel has been diagnosed with cholangiohepatitis...
i dunno, michelle. i think i'd be inclined to offer a little insulin support given the circumstances. how's her appetite? when alex had similar symptoms in early 2010, jojo told me to try to get her normal amount of calories into her plus half of that everyday. i presume she's being given an ab, B vitamins, pepcid (or the equivalent), denamarin, ursodiol, and fluids?

edited to add: and being checked for ketones?
 
Well, she was 72 at shot time, so I didn't shoot.
If it had been Doodle I would have done it with no hesitation... but I'm just not sure right now what is going on.
I'll test her again in a bit and if she's up I'll shoot.

She was hardly eating for the last few days ( I was getting concerned) but I gave her some cyproheptadine last night and some FF and jump started her appy so she's eaten pretty well today. Yes to all the meds you mentioned Jill - except the B vitamins... I'll ask my vet about that tomorrow .

And MJ I totally understand what you mean about a few odd numbers not necessarily being a call for action. That makes total sense.
You may have to remind me of that later on though 'cause I've just never been very good at sitting on my hands. :oops: :smile:
