Hi everyone

I am still new to shooting low and although remi wasn't quite in the greens when I gave him his morning shot it was the lowest I have shot him.

Here is yesterday's condo: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=127471

So far the readings are:
AMPS: 104 (fed 22g food)
+1 : 79 (two tsp food plus two treats)
+2: 65 (20g food)
+3.5 56 (2tsp food plus two dried snacks)
+4.5: 63 (10g food)
+5.5: 61 (20g food)
+7: 68

I am off to work (+2) but my partner is at home until after + 6 and will take readings as directed by me.

This Monday I am thankful for all the lovely people on the board who give their time and energy to helping others ;-)

Re: 10/27 remi AMPS 104, +1 79

Hi Sarah:

Congratulations on shooting your lowest number yet. I know it's a little nailbite_smile, but the saying is "shoot low to stay low", and it looks like Remi is doing that. Now we just need him to hop on his little green surf board and keep it safe! How nice that you have someone there that can keep an eye on him while you're at work.

Remi, you behave now!

Re: 10/27 remi AMPS 104, +1 79, +2 65, +3.5 56

Have just added the +3.5 reading and it is 56. My partner will give him a low carb snack and then I will get him to retest at +4. Hope that sounds reasonable.

Re: 10/27 remi AMPS104, +1 79,+2 65,+3.5 56,+4.5 63,+5.5 61

So currently we are just before remi's +7 and my partner will get a reading then. He has been surfing the greens nicely with the help of small amounts of food. So this leads me onto a new question.

edit+7: 68-so I wont give any more food as I don't think he will drop anymore.

I normally feed remi three meals of 22g at shot time, +2 and +4 or +5 in each cycle (so six meals a day) but with his lower numbers I have been giving additional food so he now getting more calories overall. In fact I have sort of lost track of how many calories I have been feeding him as my focus has been on blood glucose numbers but I know I want to keep his weight steady so what should I be doing?

-Giving the same amount of food as before but spread in even small amounts? ie only 20g at AM shot, 10 +1, 10g +2, 10g +3, 10g +4, +10g +5.
-Carry on as before (six meals a day) but add in a couple of tsp more food when he goes lower?

my worry is that if I give less at the shot time he will drop lower to begin with.

I'd carry on with your usual plan - you won't need to feed him extra in every cycle. if you think he's gaining weight, then you could cut back a little bit. you'll have to play it by ear and see how things go.

for today, i just wanna say

Good job shooting low and monitoring afterwards. if you are having to give him a lot of carbs to prevent him from going below 50, i think i would allow it to happen and then give him the dose reduction. if it's easy to keep him over 50 with his usual snacks, then that's fine. But if it's a lot of work, a lot more food than normal, then that says the insulin may need to be reduced.

Does that make sense?

Re: 10/27 remi AMPS104,+1 79,+2 65,+3.5 56,+4.5 63,+5.5 61,+

Hi Julie

Thanks for the encouragement. I am burning through my test strips!

Okay I will stick with his normal eating pattern and just add a little extra when needed. That will be easier for me to manage.

So far I have kept him over the 50 with his normal low carb food, just more of it. If he is low tonight I will see how he goes with just a small snack here and there and then same tomorrow, etc.

With regards healing now he is in the blues and greens, if I can keep him there what happens next? Is his pancreas beginning to heal? How long does that take? Will the next step be the below 50 level and does that signify the pancreas is doing something on its own or just that it is too dangerous to continue at that level? What would happen if I stopped the insulin now would he just rebound?

Many thanks

Sarah

Hi Sarah.

Great job today. That is a beautiful surf for Remy.

Yes, if you can keep him in greens so easily, his pancreas should be healing. What happens next, I think, is that he will let you know when he is ready for a reduction by dropping lower, despite your efforts. Then you reduce, and keep following the pattern until you are giving just a drop. The next step would be an OTJ trail. You do not want to just stop giving the insulin because he may not be done healing yet. He'll let you know. The more gradually you reduce, the better the chances that your OTJ trial will lead to remission, and that the remission will hold.

You're doing a wonderful job! :-D

Re: 10/27 remi AMPS104,+1 79,+2 65,+3.5 56,+4.5 63,+5.5 61,+

Thanks Trica

This is such a difficult dance to dance, you think you know one set of steps then you have to learn a whole new bit

Tonight he is even lower than before. I have just given his evening shot.

His numbers are:
PMPS: 93

Not sure how to add it to the title as there is no more space!

Re: 10/27 remi AMPS104,+1 79,+2 65,+3.5 56,+4.5 63,+5.5 61,+

Sarah:

We usually remove the AMPS data from the subject line when we get our PMPS and start over. That info will remain in the subject lines of the other posts in that condo, so it's easy for anyone coming along to look down and see where Remi was earlier in the day.

Re: 10/27 remi PMPS 93, +1 104

Thanks. Have just amended the title. His +1 is slightly higher than his pre shot number so I think the cycle won't be so active?? I don't want to have to test quite so much tonight if I can help it as I am burning through the test strips.

PMPS 93
+1: 104
+3: 113
+4 131

I plan to get a +2 and a +4 then hope that will be enough tonight. He is quite chesty tonight and so isn't so interested in his food. This happens quite a lot as he can burp/regurgitate his food slightly and this sets of his asthma.

Well remi's levels are just going up tonight. Not sure if it's a slightly bounce, the fact that his asthma is bad tonight or just a slight variation in dose. I am slightly disappointed after today's great numbers but I guess it still isn't that bad either.

I hope it doesn't mean I missed the shot.
