So yesterday morning I gave Bailey a mix of YAZC and Purina DM dry to try and increase his calorie intake. I mixed it with some enzymes.
I guess I gave too many enzymes because he got very nauseous and stopped eating the rest of the day until night time :( I was surprised yesterday too because after his insulin his BG dropped pretty low - at a weird time. I would have guessed the dry would keep him high all day. Then I get this nasty red this morning. I actually got a 491 first time and a 392 second time and this is the average. I am guessing this is the dry - Q:isn't this late for dry to be having an impact? Anyway I am not giving him the dry for now because I can't tell how much enzymes to give in the food and we want him eating. He is eating this morning and behaving normally.

So I emailed the vet and he mentioned lymphoma or IBD causing the weight issues. I am not convinced.

However having spoken to DH, DH is saying "by the way Bailey pees and drinks a lot still". I knew he likes to drink in the morning - but doesn't touch the water bowls the rest of the day. Today I measured and he drank 1/3 cup (2.7floz). Its more than the other cats .. Q: I don't think thats a lot per day- what do you think? Plus he is over the renal threshold fairly often so I would expect him to drink more than the others. Anyway I am now wondering about CRF? He also seems a little dehydrated today (pulled at his skin - dropped slowly) but he had diarrhea yesterday and wasn't eating well so I am not surprised. I will work to get his fluids up today.

Anyway the vet is aware of all this and is thinking about it. Bailey has an appointment on Wednesday to discuss
- doing bloodwork to check B12 levels (related to EPI) and for possible CRF
- how to increase his weight
- I read prednisone can sometimes help EPI. Deal with the BG increase with insulin increase I guess.
- I found a food called Iams maximum calories - 333 calls per 5.5oz can. Any idea on carbs or phosphorous?
- Possible CRF

Wendy
PS After doing some research my vet didn't like the Creon 5 new enzyme I found. Couldn't find much success with it. Said I could try it if I wanted though.

Could the wierd dropping BG be from him not absorbing his food altho' he did eat? I had this issue with KT when he was so sick 3 weeks ago....regardless of how high of carbs I fed him, his bg stayed low and flat. I even fed dry during that time. When he did finally start digesting, his bg shot up to nasty ranges! I did notice that he seemed to not feel well when I gave him too much of the enzymes.

I CAN answer one of your questions...MaxCal+ is only 7% carbs, phosp is 159. It's on Dr. Lisa's new list on page 29. Link HERE

I don't know about the amount of water...we have water bowls all over the house which they all use at one time or another.

BIG HUGS! Thoughts and prayers continue - come on BaileyBaby, eat and regain that weight!

FOR OTHERS READING THIS POST, I had to work with a substitute vet that couldn't dx their way out of a paperbag. I was on my own doing this or I was going to lose KT. PLEASE don't do this without YOUR vet's involvement.

Wendy,
EPI - I read the links you gave me about EPI and suspect his was a pancreatic hiccup rather than EPI but the symptoms were the same. I just know everything in his digestive system quit working, KT was getting nothing out of his food, it was going straight thru into cream/white liquipoo. I began grasping at anything as the useless subing vet said "I don't know what else to do...". The enzymes I found here are THESE. Mine are the 500mg gelcaps. I started with 1/8tsp/can then realized that was too much for KT when he seemed to have a tummy ache afterwards. I backed down to about 1/4th of the gelcap per can. Not sure how much that measures out to be but it is quite a bit less than 1/8th tsp. They also made him HUNGRY - he'd eat and eat until I'd make him stop and rest for a bit. I backed off them completely now - used a total of 3 capsules. I also gave and continue to give probiotics daily...it now keeps the diarrhea away.

I wish I had 'official' answers for you, all I can give is our experience...HUGS!!

My understanding is that you mix the enzymes with the food about 30 minutes before feeding, so it can start digesting the food.

Also, the enzymes should not have direct, undiluted contact with the mouth as they can be irritating and cause the cat to stop eating. The mouth doesn't have protective mucus the way the stomach and intestines do.

Have you checked him for hyperthyroidism? It can also cause PU/PD.

If he is starting CKD, you want to get him off the dry food. IMHO, since he is diabetic, I'd just find the highest calorie, low carb canned food I can and feed it. My cats aren't too crazy about the Iams Max Cal. I use it just for syringe feeding because it doesn't seem that palatable.

I actually mixed them in about a tbsp of the food I knew he was about to eat and let it sit for a few minutes until it started getting really runny - mixed in a touch more food and let him eat that first. As soon as he finished that, I slid the rest of the food under his nose, he didn't miss a beat. He seemed to really like the taste. I don't know if I did ANY of this right with KT but I know if I hadn't done something, he would have died...

Wendy, without your suggestions as well as all the others that weighed in on KT's prayer request post, I wouldn't have even had a direction to try.

HUGS!

This is out of date information. You do not need to "incubate" the enzymes. Please refer back to the link I provided re. enzymes. As was pointed out, the enzymes can be given in a gelcap.

It dilutes the powdered enzymes with the food, because direct contact with the oral mucosa may be irritating.
