We are almost to month 4 of our Lantus journey and when this started I never thought I would get this gal to eat wet food and get away from dry. It’s been slow going and only in past week have I realized we might be close. She has still been eating about 12-14g dry kibble AM and PM with 31% carb on dry matter basis. But this week I eased back even more and augmented with more bowls of Fancy Feast pate. She never finishes a bowl of the FF, I sprinkle dried chicken on top and she eats from multiple bowls. I also give her 100% chicken or tuna treats or Applaws tuna loin or chicken filet.
I have read in this community that you have to be careful when you eliminate carbs from the diet as there is hypo risk, but I assumed if you graduated down you would start seeing lower BG levels over time. Minner continues to get 4 units or a sliver more AM and PM. Yesterday I cut her dry food to 6-7g and continued today.
You see the PM numbers in my thread subject line. Still declining despite no PM dose and feeding her (but no dry and only low carb wet tonite until I just gave her medium carb wet 45 minutes ago).
I’m going to test her again here in another 15 minutes at the +3 mark. If it’s still going down and is below 100, do I feed her the high carb dry or maybe a higher carb wet (e.g. FF gravy with 15%) ???
What do I do …. How do I properly relieve her of eating the dry food? I have no idea how insulin should be adjusted when she does eventually get above 180 and should get some amount of insulin. Do I drop down to 2 units or even less??? Or what if it’s jumped well above 200? Should I give her dry food again or go with medium carb wet for some period of time. Please help and thank you so much. I’ll ear prick her again shortly and reply.
I am glad her numbers are this low, but I’m terrified by the ongoing decline. I don’t know if there is a guideline for how to safely transition from 4U lantus 2x/day while eating 10-14g dry twice a day …. Thank you.
<edit since +3 ear prick> BG went up to 136 from 105. Whew. I guess the medium carb wet food did that (?). I’m obviously not giving her insulin tonight, but what do I do tomorrow? It seems crazy to give her dry food after working so hard on a multi-month journey to kick that habit. I’m afraid if I start giving her medium carb wet regularly she’ll tyrn nose up at low carb pate. But maybe i need to give both. Just no clue on the insulin dose but it seems that 4U is not a good idea if no dry food being offered, even if she is above 180 in AM.
guidance requested and appreciated
huge thanks to this community for the support and access to knowledge about diet and health. Dry food (or most dry food) truly is terrible. It has been a a trip on the struggle bus.
